Thoughts on UB Scores

There’s been some talk about Raisman scoring about .5 on bars than she usually does, but it’s worth noting that a number of gymnasts, including her teammates, received a similar bump in E-score.

Compare the E-scores of the other U.S. women from 2015 UB finals vs. 2016 Olympic prelims:

Kocian: 8.766 (2015) vs. 9.366 (2016)
Douglas: 8.733 (2015) vs. 9.266 (2016)
(Unfortunately Raisman fell on her only bars routine in 2015 Worlds, but we know she gets between 8.1-8.2 when she doesn’t fall.)

The highest E-score from World Championships UB finals this entire quad was 8.866 from Kyla Ross in 2013. The highest E-score from last year’s UB finals was 8.766, shared by Kocian and Komova.

Did everyone suddenly started performing a whole .5 better on bars than they have the entire quad, or did the judges became .5 more lenient with everyone? Examining the scores and routines, I think the latter is more likely.

A number of gymnasts (with the exception of the Chinese) got a bump in E-score here. Asuka Teramato received a similar E-score to Raisman in prelims (8.8). At last year’s world championships, she received 8.133 for a hit routine. Kocian’s E-score increased .6 from last year and Douglas’ E-score increased .533. These are big jumps for everybody.

Kocian and Douglas improved their execution slightly, but there wasn’t much to improve, while Raisman did one of her best bar sets in prelims (and one of her worst in AA). In UB Qualifications, Raisman ranked 19th on bars in 2010, 22nd on bars in 2011, 23rd on bars in 2012, and 22nd on bars here in Rio. The E-scores were just higher for everyone but relative to each other, everyone scored basically the same as usual.

Probably won’t convince anyone, but it's interesting food for thought…
