Yao Jinnan is one of my favorite gymnasts but she has had a strange and injury plagued career. She would have won the 2011 world AA title over Wieber and Komova without her fall, but due to the fall settled for 3rd. Both had their own errors, but not a fall. She won silver on beam at these worlds behind only Sui's most dominant beam performance of the quad, and very narrowly missed a floor medal. So at this point she wasnt just strong on bars and beam, but very strong on floor (which would later decrease) and had a very good DTY too at this point. There were big expectations for her in London except that she was badly injured and too injured to contend anywhere but bars where she just (controversially to some) missed a medal.
Despite showing an obvious and unexplainable decline on floor, and to a degree vault and beam, she had a good shot to medal in the AA at the 2013 worlds but fell. She should have won the bars title at these worlds but again fell.
In 2014 she again missed a likely AA bronze with a fall, but this time won gold on bars. At this point she still looked like a possible AA contender for Rio, and the early favorite to win bars.
The last 2 years she has been so injured she has barely competed and missed the Chinese Rio Olympic team where the Chinese women had almost no success.
Would her rather enigmatic, up and down, and largely injury plagued career have turned out completely differently had she stayed on beam in the AA finals of the 2011 worlds and won gold?
Had Jao not fallen off beam in 2011 and won the AA title would career be different?
