One thing I cant help but noticing looking back on my vast array of old gymnastics tapes from the late 90s and early 2000s is the insane hype around Blaine Wilson. Tim Daggett many times with quotes like "Blaine is just so dominant in the World today" or "Blaine is the guy to beat in Sydney and at the upcoming Worlds for sure." He was dominant in the U.S both at the U.S Nationals and at the SCAM cup with its suspect judging, but he never won a single individual world or Olympic medal. Was he really that good or just majorly overrated in the U.S.
Even someone like Danell Leyva in reality has had a better career since his World/Olympic achievements- Olympic AA medalist, world parallel bars Champ, world parallel bars and world high bars silver medalist, are sufficient to trump Wilson's much higher number of U.S AA and American Cup titles (which Leyva has 1 of each anyway, plus 1 Olympic Trials victory just like Wilson). One could strongly argue Jonathon Horton has had a better career than Blaine too. Or Tim Daggett himself even.
Blaine Wilson- great gymmnast or majorly overhyped in the U.S?
