OT: Figure skating thread for mutual fans of gym and FS :)

Is anyone interested in having a thread to discuss figure skating, since the Olympics are coming up? I checked the Off-Topic forum, but it's just crickets over there. Please let me know if anyone feels it is inappropriate to have this in this forum and I can move it.

I just finished watching the short program part of Russian women's nationals from this weekend and I have a question maybe someone could answer? I stopped watching FS after the Olympics in 2006, but did keep an eye out now and then, such as with Sasha Cohen's comeback. When I stopped watching I remember there was so much buzz about Elizaveta Tuktamysheva and she was *definitely* going to win the next Olympics. Now I've watched this and last year's Russian nationals and it's strange to see that this star, who was once world champion, is in the second-tier of Russian women without having an obvious reason, like injury.

What took her from being a world champion to being out of the top 5 in Russia despite clean programs? I read Wikipedia and it seemed to imply that she was never actually one of the bests in Russia, just that she had a triple axel and that's what got her the World Championship. And without that, she never got back to that status. Is that true?

I still have to watch the long program from Russia but wow, too bad only 3 girls can go to the Olympics!

Worlds 2018 Prediction Thread!

I know it's super early, but that's what makes it fun. Seeing how wrong we will probably be. But, with the end of the year I think it would be fun to do this.

I guess we could try to predict TF/AA/EF and then also who is going to make the teams.

TF:
1)
2)
3)

AA
1)
2)
3)

VT
1)
2)
3)

UB
1)

FX

3)

With that you'll have an idea of who you think will make the teams.

USA

4)
Alternate)

Russia
1)
2)
3)
4)

China

and so on.

It will be fun to look at this in a few months!

Winter Olympics

Since it's the off season and I know a lot of people here like Olympic sports in general, especially figure skating I thought I'd make a place for us to discuss all things Pyeongchang 2018 and the lead up to it .

Especially with today's news of Russia being banned from the games and their individual athletes can only compete neutrally (no flag, anthem, uniform). I could see that conversation ending up in the Russian Gymnastics thread so lets discuss that and everything else here.

I wonder how the latest news will effect the Grand Prix Final. Mevedeva (sp) was already out with an injury but this could end up being the other skaters' "Olympics" if they don't go for the neutral athlete option. it will be an interesting Winter sports season, that's for sure.

Aly Raisman's Book

So I finished Aly's book after work last night. I would say that aside from the LN stuff, it's very similar to all of the gymnastics book out there. I mean, you can read it in one seating - should take about 2 hours.

I was wondering if anyone had read it, plans to read it, or have any questions?

FX Music Question

I was rewatching Jessica Lopez's 2011 American Cup FX and I feel like I have heard someone else use her music recently (as in a routine I watched recently - it might not be a recently performed routine) and for the life if me I can't remember whose it was. Does anyone know? It's driving me nuts.

I can't get Yputube to work on my Ipad but I believe it's called Beethoven Virus?

Teams if you had to be 18

It's off season, I'm bored and when I couldn't sleep last night I started dreaming up what some of the top teams might have been if the minimum age was 18. just for fun, no fighting! Of course teres a million what ifs in terms of peaking and injuries and so on.

2016 USA
Swap out Laurie for Maggie, put up same lineup as 2015 minus Brenna

2015 USA actually stays the same, Simone wins her first world title. Maybe Kyla peaks and wins 2014 AA but then retires since she's so tall. Or Larisa wins.

2011, 2012 gets interesting

Some combination of Aly (only 2012), Alicia, Nastia, Anna, Shawn, Becca and Bridget (keeping in mind Shawn and Bridget would have had to peak later, this would be their first Olympics)

2008- Chellsie, Nastia, Alicia, Jana and ???

2012 Russia, Nabs makes the team. Maybe in 2016 too!

Romania stops making teams completely and Cata and Sandra dominate as individuals in 2012.

It's interesting to think who might never even become an Olympian with these rules, like Jordyn, Kyla, Sam P, Grishina, etc. Komova would have to peak later and stay healthy to replace Melnikova in 2016.

It really changes the landscape other than USA 2015-2016. To be clear I don't propose the change, I'm just curious with all you gym gurus, who you would come up to be on your teams . It seems a lot more two time Olympians would be common, those just old enough at 18-19 and then no one to replace them when they are 22+. Aly and Aliya would have the most recent benefit here, but they didn't need this rule to be awesome "old lady" gymnasts anyway.

Worlds Commentary Questions

While watching the telecast of the 2017 Worlds, there were three comments that puzzled me:

1. First of all, they seem to imply that you no longer get credit for elements you fall on in WAG. Did the FIG actually come to their senses on this, as opposed to what happened in 2006?

2. Tim implied Ellie Black should have gotten a deduction for both the hand touch AND the wobble on the same element. I thought if you fell or touched your hand, you only got that deduction and that was the max they could take. (As opposed to those who take three steps and then fall, for example). Did this change?

3. I kept hearing that the new COP encourages more difficult mounts. Could someone please elaborate/explain this? I haven't been able to keep up with the COP because of some health issues.

Thanks in advance.

What's your prediction for Simone's comeback?

It's the last day of Simone's time off - she's back in the gym and with Laurent for the first time tomorrow.

I figured we'd celebrate with a little poll.

Comments (specially of skills/routines/d-values for this code) always welcome.

At least for me. :D (x-posted from WWGym)

Stumbled upon this gem. Over 5000 photos of our MAG, WAG and Rhythmic gymnasts who competed in Seoul. I must caution you that they are in no particular order if you decide to go through all 578 pages.

Even better? There is video of all the competition, including award ceremonies. But you need to run Internet Explorer to see them. Chrome and Firefox won't work.

You will need to click here first, http://ift.tt/2iPv0pm --click either PHOTO GALLERY or VIDEO GALLERY directly below for pics and vids. (Tiger on a balance beam toward the lower left hand corner) I can't directly link it.

FINALLY, the WAG award ceremony and MAG stuff. Yee-haw!

Dance Magazine columnist praises 1968 Olympics FX gymnasts

While collating my collection of old Dance Magazines, I came across a column by Ann Barzel in the December, 1968 issue. She had some very nice things to say about the gymnasts participating: "The televised Olympics from Mexico City offered some fine near-dancing in the gymnastic competitions. The Russians were balletically graceful and Czech champion Vera Caslavska was stunning in her display of floor exercises. But the real dance talent, which someone should snatch from the jaws of the gymnasium and lead to genuine dance, is little American Cathy Rigby. Coordination and litheness all gymnasts have, but this 15 year old also has grace and an innate beauty of movement. Won't you come and dance, Cathy?" I also remember when the Russian team became such a sensation, and the old "Gymnast" magazine put out some special publications about them (which I still have). Tourischeva was highly praised, and justifiably so, and the writer said that she was a "strikingly beautiful young woman" (with which I agree), but went on to say that after her gymnastics career was over, she "should have a long career in ballet." Well, Luda was a great dancer as a gymnast, but I am afraid that she was just not built for ballet, and this from someone who has always adored T as her favorite gymnast (except for possibly Olga). Anyway, thought you would be interested in what dance writers thought about dance in gymnastics--

My Facebook feed just showed a video of Shawn sniffling on camera that she's pregnant, and "How am I going to tell Andrew that he's going to be a daddy?" Uh, did I miss something? Is this some sort of joke? I'm assuming she actually broke the news to hubby before posting the video.

NCAA Women's 2018 Schedules

UCLA announced their competition schedule.. http://ift.tt/2z6gdcW

Interesting that they are pretty much staying on the west coast for the most part except for a trip to Lincoln and a trip to Dallas.. Wouldn't they do a competition in Cancun or Maui to start the year? It seems they are being more careful with the budget it seems.. I wonder if they've been hit with budget cuts to the program

Balance of 2017-2020 COP compared to previous open ended codes

As a numbers guy, I've kept track of best potential AA scores for the top gymnasts in each open ended code. For each apparatus, I give each gymnast the best score they received during all world championships and the Olympics during that quad.

I wanted to share the average scores on each event of the top 10 AA gymnasts in each code to compare how balanced each code was.

2006-2008 (Liukin, Johnson, Yang, Nistor, Ferrari, Semenova, Barbosa, Jiang, Memmel, Tweddle)

VT: 15.175 UB: 16.120 BB: 15.705 FX: 15.248

2009-2012 (Komova, Douglas, Mustafina, Wieber, Raisman, Yao, Bross, Jiang, Huang, Izbasa)

VT: 15.448 UB: 15.294 BB: 15.124 FX: 14.976

2013-2016 (Biles, Raisman, Mustafina, Douglas, Iordache, Ross, Nichols, Shang, Yao, Downie)

VT: 15.280 UB: 15.210 BB: 14.939 FX: 14.858

2017-2020 so far (Hurd, Murakami, Smith, Black, Eremina, de Jesus dos Santos, Derwael, Alt, Steingruber, Varinska)

VT: 14.321 UB: 14.252 BB: 13.063 FX: 13.530

Each code has improved on the balance up to 2016. So we will have to wait and see how this quad looks once we are deeper into it. I don't think it's a surprise that beam was the lowest by far, followed by floor, and then vault and bars as the highest scoring events. Do you guys think the code will end up being pretty balanced by the end of the quad?

2017 Worlds: The Hunger Games - The Good, the Bad, the Ugly.

This has been a very interesting Worlds. I have quite a few comments about this Worlds and my overall experience that I will add later--including arena regulations, lighting, podium training times, etc.

However, to get the party and discussion started here are some statements from Valentina translated by Luba.

http://ift.tt/2yyGaFE

"As we were explained, this had to do with TV, which, apparently, was streaming the podium training."

This statement in particular sounds like Valentina trying to take a dig at the U.S., who were the only ones to my knowledge to stream podium training on their YouTube page. I'm not sure who explained the situation to Valentina. However, I can assure you that USAG's decision to stream just two subdivisions (U.S. men's and U.S. women's) had nothing to do with the decision to change time allocation for PT. It hasn't in the past and it didn't this time.

2017 World Championships- WAG AA

So we don't actually have a thread for this yet and I thought I'd make one so we can have a separate AA thread from qualifications.

Oh, and Ragan Smith injured her ankle during vault warmup and is now out of AA. BECAUSE ENOUGH BAD STUFF HASN'T HAPPENED

Hopes for 2017 World Championships

I don't think I will ever get over Iordache's injury (not to mention Andrade, Thorsdottir, LTT, Melnikova, McCusker, Downie, Kovacs, etc.).

That said, I need to think positive because it is the World Championships and it is the most exciting time for gymnastics all year!

So I decided to make a list of updated hopes:

- DJDS wins an AA medal
- Moors win a floor medal to the delight of her home crowd
- Murakami wins floor gold
- Bars final is one of the best ever -- I hope everyone hits!
- LTT wins beam gold
- Varinska has her best competition ever and gives me hope in Ukrainian gymnastics
- German girls keep being awesome
- Hurd outshines Smith and establishes her place as the top American
- Carey sticks her vaults en route to gold
- Melka hits 4 for 4!
- Moldauer has a good competition
- Verniaev wins AA gold for the first time
- Larduet or Shirai make the AA podium (I have a good feeling about this one!)

What are your hopes? :)

Incorrect event details on World's ticket

I just found out this morning that the information that is on the tickets I printed in January is incorrect (the one printed a couple of months ago is fine). I checked the online ticket pdf, and it does look like it was updated between now and then and reflects what's on the event website. I'm shocked an email wasn't sent about this correction when someone originally amended the ticket details! If I had gone by the information on the original ticket, I would have arrived late to the competition.

Anyway, I wanted to share this in case someone else might be in the same boat.

Where to rewatch Rio Olympics?

So last summer during the Olympics I was away from home in a place with no internet, and I missed all the prelims/team finals. I got to see the AA's and EF's but that was it. After the Olympics I dove into a really crazy school and work schedule (I basically did 3 college years in 1 year) and I've only just finished.

I want to go back and watch the full-event replays of the stuff I missed, but I don't know where to look. NBCOlympic's website has switched over to Winter Olympic stuff already and Youtube is no help, lol.

Does anyone know where I can find full-event replays of stuff from Rio, mainly TF's but also other finals if possible? Links or even pointing me to a place where I can DL stuff is good. I think I prefer BBC/FIG commentary but if NBC is the only thing available, I'll go with that too.

Thanks for helping a gym fan out!

2017 Worlds Prediction Contest - Ya'll thought I forgot, didn't you!? - 8th Edition

You guys! You didn't think I was gonna forget this, did you? ;)

Welcome to the 8th edition of the IG prediction contest! Nothing new to report this year; we're doing the same as last!

Submit your predictions now!

We're using Google Forms again to submit predictions so visit the links below!

Click HERE to submit your predictions!
Click HERE to view the Response spreadsheet

Reminders for this year:
- I will NOT be accepting ANY forum submissions for predictions as long as the form is working well. If you post your predictions in this thread but do not submit them via the webform, your responses will NOT be entered and recorded.
- PLEASE save a hard copy of your predictions elsewhere in case the spreadsheet goes paflooey. I suggest copying them into this thread, but remember that I will NOT be using them as your official predictions unless something goes wrong (and I will notify everyone if that is the case).
- You CAN edit your predictions after you make them; just make sure to save the "Edit Response" link when you first submit so you can access it later. Your unique link will work up until I close down the ability to edit.

Rules for the actual point tallying are the same as before, which I will quote below:

Quote:

The rules are really simple. You post your predictions for the medal podium of each event, plus one alternate per podium.

Points
5 points --- each correct medal prediction
2.5 points --- each correct top 3 prediction, but incorrect medal prediction
.5 point --- if your alternate wins a medal.

For example, in '10 this was my AA prediction:

AA:
1 Musty
2 Bross
3 Aly
Alt: Jiang Yuyuan

The actual result was 1st: Musty, 2nd: Jiang, 3rd Bross. I received 5 points for correctly predicting Musty's medal position, 2.5 points for putting Bross on the podium but in the wrong position, and .5 points for having my alternate Jiang medal, for a total of 8 points. I didn't receive any points for Aly, since she didn't make the podium.

In the case of a tie for a medal, you still only receive points for each correct PLACEMENT. If Kyla and Simone tie in AA and you had them 1-2, you would receive 7.5 points for correctly predicting the gold medalist but incorrectly predicting the silver medalist (which would correctly be no one). If you like to tempt fate, feel free to put ties as your prediction BUT you may not have more than 3 people per podium plus one alternate (i.e. no eight way tie for gold! :p ;) )

Predictions are locked the day after prelims are completed, (before MAG AA starts) with NO EDITING ALLOWED. This gives everyone the best idea of who will be competing for the medals, but does not account for last minute substitutions due to federation swapping or injury. You are not required to predict your podium out of the official start list but may substitute anyone as you see fit; heck, put anyone on there! Do as you please. :)

The contest will run for WAG and MAG, and then one combined for those who submit in both categories. You are free to predict all the events or just a few; whatever you like. :) No deducting points for wrong answers, so why not? ;)
Predictions will CLOSE at 5pm CST October 5th. You are welcome to make any changes to your predictions up until that point, but not after. Absolutely no editing or substitutions after the closing time will be allowed, so make sure you double and triple check! :)

Looking forward to another fun year!

How Are These Physically Possible

The more I look at whipbacks, the more I am convinced that they are like the bumblebee flying - there is NO way they should be possible. When I first heard them described as a back handspring with no hands, I thought "Oh, so a flip." But they actually look like a gymnast is pushing off the air, which is not a possibility. How can they even be done? And I recall someone (Natasha Kelley?) even doing them looking like they are one armed, which is even more bizarre.

Also, the Arabian doubles that go around the side, like Ragan or what I read once with Jamie Dantzscher. How do they work? I've seen Ragan do it and she does look sideways, but again, I can't understand HOW that can happen.

Thanks in advance. And yes, I barely passed physics in school LOL

MONTREAL gymnasts (known SV's) + predictions/ wishlist (aka the stan corner...)

With podium training just a week away, do you have any strong wishes or predictions of things that will happen in competition now that we have a clear picture of who is going?

I'll start the first post with an incomplete recap of gymnasts' known SV's. Feel free to complete missing gymnasts' start values and discuss questionable SV's. By all means correct me if I got something wrong and I will edit post.

How good a gym is All Olympia in LA these days?

Seems I have not heard anything about them since Maroney in 2012.

Do they have a good crop of juniors, or they've dropped off or what?

What is the atmosphere like there?

Worlds Tickets

So I just started a new job so unfortunately I don't think I'm going to be able to go to Worlds. I have tickets to all the finals including WAG AA. I'm willing to sell them, however looking at the tickets, they have my name and some contact information on them and says that they may require ID or Credit Card validation to use. Anyone know anything about this? Is it just a formality to say that? I'd hate a spot to sit empty when I know it's sold out. If anyone is interested, it's a silver package worth approximately $200 all together for AA and EFs MAG and WAG. Send me a PM. :)

Has anyone heard how people like Jana Bieger, Shayla Worley, and the other Florida members of our gymnastics family are doing?
I know there have been some fairly big clubs in Florida, not to mention the U of Florida Gymnastics Team and it's hard not to feel a little concerned.

NBC Vignette/Feature Music Request

I've been rewatching some old competitions and some of the features/vignettes have music I like. I assume they are from film sound tracks because that's what NBC usually does, but I don't know which ones. Can anyone ID the music from the following:

1997 International Team Championships Dominique Moceanu and Gina Gogean features
1997 USA's Opening and Closing music from both days
1996 Olympic Trials Optional Closing Music
1994 USA's Kerri Strug Feature
NBC Vignette/Feature Music Request

Dominique Moceanu UB question

In Domi's 1997 Nationals bar routine she does a giant half pauses and then does some sort of front full pirouette. On day two she did a second full pirouette after that. Does anyone know the proper names/grips for those skills?

Also in 1998 she did that same half pirouette to opposing full pirouette. What was that called?

21 years of watching the sport and I still can't keep the grips straight. LOL

Does anyone know what Riley McCusker's 2017 floor is and do you have a link to the full length version?

Impressed to see Jonna Adlerteg back and with a 6.2 D on bars even though she clearly had some problems. Meanwhile Amy Tinkler qualified to all four finals.

Settle a Debate: 2008

Two things that I often see and fundtamentally disagree:

1) Nastia wasn't a "true" All-Arounder.

Just because she didn't have a high difficulty vault doesn't mean she wasn't an AA.

2) Nastia was gifted a bars score in 2008

If Nastia was gifted on bars, then Shawn was gifted on vault. No way she got that around.

World Championship Medal Tallies

With the World Championships approaching, I thought it might be interesting to look at the women’s medal winners over the years from a country perspective, as most of us have a good idea of the most medaled individuals. The following is a list of the medals, per event since the first championship in 1934. (I may or may not finish the men later as they are a giant pain to count pre-1950). 2017 Southeast Asian Games, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

This multi-sport event is happening in the shadow of bigger meets like the Universiade and USA Nationals, but it's here and it's real! The gymnastics competition seems to be Team and EF only, no AA. The official website isn't user-friendly, so I'm posting results from Wikipedia:

http://ift.tt/2wwLqIW

Texas-based PHI gymnast Kaitlin DeGuzman won UB:

Nice results for MAS, Singapore, and PHI, but I miss Phan Thi Ha Thanh.

2017 World Rosters

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone had any news regarding the selection of squds for the World Championships in Montreal.
To my knowledge, Janpan and Canada are only teams who named their teams for worlds:

Canada

Brooklyn Moors
Elsabeth Black
Shallon Olson
Isabella Onyshko
Brittany Rogers (Alt.)

Japan
Sae Miyakawa
Murakami Mai
Asuka Teramoto
Yuki Uchiyama

Great Britain
They have not annouced a team but both of the Downie sisters will miss worlds due injuries/recovering from surgery.

US Nationals + Worlds Selection - MAG Edition

Since only a handful of us even follow MAG, I thought I'd separate this from the main USA thread knowing the men's stuff will be glossed over once the women's portion begins lol.

Anyway, here's the field set for nationals:
http://ift.tt/2fdC3GW

As I expected, no Chris Brooks or Jake Dalton. Sam Mikulak said at the national qualifier that Chris Brooks had a busted ankle. Meanwhile, Jake Dalton injured his knee warming up at Winter Cup and generally has been on the fence about continuing anyway.

I mentioned before Sam Mikulak only plans to do pommels at nationals (and Worlds if he's selected although I can't imagine taking him if that's the case).

Looking For 2 Romanian Photos

Does anyone have a face-on photo of 2008 Romanian National Team Member Corina Stefan and 1988 Olympic Alternate Gabriela Gheorghe? I was going through some of my Romanian gymnastics stuff last night and realized I have absolutely no pics or videos (other than some blurry ones of Gabi I saw on Youtube that are too far away to see her face). And it would just be nice to at least see what they look like.

Thanks in advance.

2017 US Classic

10 days until Classics! Roster is finally out!

Also, because of the sheer number of Juniors competing, those on the National Team will be competing during the Senior Session. So, that's Olivia Dunne, Adeline Kenlin, Sunisa Lee, Emma Malabuyo, and Maile O'Keefe. (Gabby Perea is not competing at Classics, but competing at Gymnix this year has already qualified her to P&Gs)

The event is scheduled for July 29th, at the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates, Illinois. Juniors start at 2 PM Eastern/1 PM Central, and Seniors are at 7:30 PM Eastern/6:30 PM Central. (Hopes Classic will be on July 28th, at 3:30 PM Eastern/2:30 PM Central)

Livestream details: Juniors and Hopes will be livestreamed via http://ift.tt/2vk9rz9 while Seniors will be broadcasted on the Olympic Channel/streamed (most likely for cable subscribers only) at http://ift.tt/2uKgSmg [[side note: My TV's guide does show the US Classic, starting at 8 PM so the first half hour will probably be intros and fluff bits)

Anybody know that latest on this girl? I know she had said she'd like to compete for Russia but at this point, doesn't she need to make a run either in the US or Russia?

Mihaela Renciu?

I was browsing Youtube for videos of old Romanian gymnasts and discovered this video. Is this one of the Renciu twins mislabled or is it someone else?

If it's not either of the twins, does anyone know anything about her?

a surprise from the past

The other day I was researching in old newspaper microfilms and found, in a paper dated Oktober 26, 1956, a photograph of a gymnast of the time. The caption read, "SWEDISH STAND--Doris Hedberg shows one how to keep limber as she stands on her hands during a Stockholm workout. She is a member of Sweden's Olympic gymnast squad." Ms. Hedberg is shown doing a stag handstand, and the interesting thing is that she is wearing a sleeveless leotard. I was wondering if this was the style then? When I first started paying attention to gymnastics, the leotards went to the wrist. In GYMNAST Magazine once I saw a photo of Tourischeva, and her sleeves were only halfway down her upper arms. Three-quarter length sleeves are nice, but does anyone know if sleeveless was once commonplace?

The return of Yesenia Ferrera

She won the senior women's AA at the Central American Sports Festival. Cuba won team silver.

AA: 54.550
VT: 14.350 (only one vault so no vault final)
UB: 12.850
BB: 13.350
FX: 14.000

http://ift.tt/2spS4iE

Her full name is Yesenia Saskia Ferrera Núñez, so Yesenia Saskia is her on the results. Not sure why they put that when she's been Yesenia Ferrera since she started competing internationally. Admittedly names in Spanish and Portuguese-speaking countries can be complicated because most bear the surnames of both parents (my name is hyphenated for that reason lol).

Looking For 1992 Shannon Miller IG Interview

I've been on a Mag 7 Reminiscing party lately and I decided to pull all my material together and scan it as a collection. While I was going through articles, I realized I couldn't find the March 92 interview with Shannon (I lost a IG issues in a move a few years ago) and the issue is sold out, so I can't replace it. Normally I wouldn't ask this, but since you can't get the issue anymore, could someone please just scan it and post it for me? It would really mean a lot.

Amy Chow Interviews?

Are there any interviews with Amy Chow circa 1996-1998? I have tried searching Youtube but for the life of me I can't seem to find anything.

Also, is the 1997 documentary "Mag 7 Made In America" anywhere online to watch and ideally download? I found Anything To Win but not the 1997 one.

So, I've been under the weather and lying in bed miserable all day. The only thing that as really brought me any pleasure is watching gymnastic documentaries, intermittently napping and cheese sticks.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

1992 World Championships

So, I was watching the preliminary videos from 1992 World Championships today, while following along with results at gymn-forum.net.

I was surprised that Gutsu actually qualified into the finals, because I remembered Boguinskaya competing. Then, I looked back at qualifying results and noticed that there were no scores, according to gymn-forum.net, for Boguinskaya. So, what's the deal there? How did Boguinskaya compete without qualifying, and why didn't Gutsu compete, having qualified? Was there an injury and they could sub in Boguinskaya? Does gymn-forum.net not have her qualifying scores in error?

Sorry to post this on a separate thread. I couldn't find the questions thread.

2017 NHK Trophy - Tokyo, Japan

All the main Japanese skipped the Asian Championships in Bangkok to compete at this instead because it's a qualifier for their Worlds team.

Mai Murakami and Aiko Sugihara secured their spots for Worlds. Also to note, I believe Sae Miyakawa had a 6.2 D on floor.

2017 Osijek World Cup - May 18-21

Next World Cup in neighboring Croatia this weekend.

This one has a pretty good field. I figure Flávia Saraiva won't compete following her ankle injury from a few days ago. Also, Evgenia Shelgunova has replaced Elizaveta Kochetkova.

2017 Asian Championships - May 18-21|Bangkok, Thailand

Some of the major teams and names expected to compete. I'm only listing the seniors for now.

You can find the full list under the work plan: http://ift.tt/2pzHB2U

Women's teams:

CHN Wang Yan
CHN Liu Tingting
CHN Luo Huan
CHN Tan Jiaxin
CHN Liu Jinru

JPN Marina Kawasaki
JPN Koko Dobashi
JPN Nozomo Toyoda
JPN Kasumi Mirohashi
JPN Honoka Koga

PRK Jon Jang Mi
PRK Pyon Rye Yong
PRK Kim Won Yong
PRK Kim Su Jong
PRK Jong Un Gyong

Farah Ann Abdul Hadi (MAS) is competing. Oksana Chusovitina is currently competing at the Islamic Solidarity Games in Baku.

All the top Japanese are going to compete at NHK Cup instead because it's a qualifier for their Worlds team.

North Korea's team is brand new with Jong Un Gyong as the only familiar name (2014 and 2015 Worlds). But it's nice to see them with new gymnasts because they had the same group of 5-6 girls for a couple of quads. I have no idea what the status is of Hong Un Jong.

Men's teams:

CHN Lin Chaopan
CHN Sun Wei
CHN Liu Rongbing
CHN Xiao Ruoteng
CHN Zou Jingyuan

JPN Hayato Uchida
JPN Jun Muraoka
JPN Shuto Horiuchi
JPN Tatsuki Ichise
JPN Hiroki Ishikawa

KOR Jo Yeong Gwang
KOR Park Min Soo
KOR Kim Han Sol
KOR Lee Jung Hyo
KOR Lee Jae Seong

PRK Ri Wi Chol
PRK Ri Yong Min
PRK Ri Kwang Mo
PRK Han Jong Hyok
PRK Jong Ryong Il

VIE Dinh Phuong Thanh
VIE Le Thanh Tung
VIE Dang Nam
VIE Trang Dinh Vuong
VIE Nguyen Tuan Dat

Like the women, the Japanese men are saving their best for NHK Cup. I've not heard of any of their guys except Hiroki Ishikawa who competed at some World Cups and Scam.

Former Bulldog Courtney Kupets Carter named new Georgia gymnastics head coach

"Just as the Georgia football team has Kirby Smart, the Georgia gymnastics program now has one of its own as its head coach.

Courtney Kupets Carter, who competed for Georgia from 2006-2009, was named the program's eighth head coach on Tuesday. The move comes after former head coach Danna Durante was fired on April 24."

Just wondering for those who have attended classics the past few years in Chicago about how safe the area is. I am trying to convince my family we want to go to classics since nationals are out of the question this year- but I keep hearing about how Chicago has one of the highest crime rates in the US.

Nostalgia thread: share videos of your favorite gymnasts who were overlooked by coaches, or overshadowed by more famous team mates. I feel like this mostly applies to the deeper, powerhouse programs, but feel free to post who ever you want.

Mostly, I wanted an excuse to post this beautiful FX from Maria Neculita:
