The other day I was researching in old newspaper microfilms and found, in a paper dated Oktober 26, 1956, a photograph of a gymnast of the time. The caption read, "SWEDISH STAND--Doris Hedberg shows one how to keep limber as she stands on her hands during a Stockholm workout. She is a member of Sweden's Olympic gymnast squad." Ms. Hedberg is shown doing a stag handstand, and the interesting thing is that she is wearing a sleeveless leotard. I was wondering if this was the style then? When I first started paying attention to gymnastics, the leotards went to the wrist. In GYMNAST Magazine once I saw a photo of Tourischeva, and her sleeves were only halfway down her upper arms. Three-quarter length sleeves are nice, but does anyone know if sleeveless was once commonplace?
a surprise from the past
