His dancing is very good and he could do that double double in his sleep.

Workout Schedule Question

I've just been reading different workout breakdowns like the ones in Krista Quiner's books and something occurred to me. Instead of a gymnast doing ALL her bar routines, then ALL her beam routines etc, why don't coaches break things up more and let them change events. For example Mary Lou would do 25 vaults (I think???), 8 bar routines, 10 beam, and two floor. Why not break it up and do 10 vault, 3 bars, 3 beam, 10 more vault, 3 more bars, 3 more beam, and one floor, and then go back one more time for the last set? It would be far more similar to competition and I would think it would especially help people like Simone, who get bored more easily.

Alyona Shchennikova has options.

Alyona recently competed at the Veronin Cup and did very well winning AA. Do you think she should compete as an independent like Carey or maybe compete for Russia? What if McKayla Skinner decides to compete at World Cups for vault and floor too?

I am dyslexic so shut up about my grammar and please stop making fun of my disability.

Romanians From 86 Goodwill: Zavod and Stanciu

I was wondering if you guys could tell me anything about Liliana Stanciu & Luminita Zavod from the 1986 Goodwill Games team, like their hometowns, clubs, and Liliana's birthdate. I have never heard of either of the girls before and would like to know more about them, since they are from some of Romania's best years (1988 quad)

Also does anyone have a photo of Stanciu? I tried googling and can't find anything.

NCAA 2018-19 Thread

Thought I'd start this since there was one last season.

UCLA looks fantastic. Honestly already look better on floor and vault (5 10.0 vaults!) than last year, look about the same on beam (miss Peng but with Glenn #2 and norah should be fine). Bars not quite there yet but not worried about it. Sekai is injured but she will bring another 1.5 and a huge floor.

Margzetta is an incredible performer. Going to get 10s.

I think we may see a bit of a drop from Oklahoma, but you never know with them, they always hit and can beat teams with more talent.

Florida will be threat as well, unfrotnute that Jazzy is injured. But they also only have one senior this year, so maybe next year is their year.

Does anyone remember why she changed gyms in 2010? I was going thru old IGs and saw the note in the AA The World section, but there wasn't much info and for the life of me I can't remember what happened.

Romanian Interviews - 2014-2015

Has anyone ever seen this channel before? There appear to be some really cute interviews with some of the girls training before 2016, including Larisa Iordache, Andreea Iridon, Andreea Munteanu, Laura Jurca, Diana Bulimar, and Silvia Zarzu.

If we have any Romanian speakers who could translate them, it would be so awesome.

Fontaine/Maloney 1996 FX?

I was watching some of the 1996 Olympic Trials stuff USAG has on their Youtube site and noticed they don't have some of the optional floor routines. I found Mohini & Andree from Classics the same year, but I can't find Kristen Maloney or Larissa Fontaine's 1996 floor routines anywhere. Does anyone have them? I'd really like to see them.

Gymnasts - Potential Upgrades/Solutions for Tokyo 2020 Olympics

Well now we have almost finished 2 years into this quad how do we like the new code?

Also what upgrades can you see gymnasts doing and what potential solutions are there for any existing problems.

I love Nina's Derwael's bars but am getting a bit concerned about her AA chances if she only has an FTY. That cost a Chinese gymnast in 2016 Olympics AA. I read on another thread someone suggesting a Khorkina type vault/a tucked Cheng. That should be about the same a a DTY as can someone her height do a DTY well?

Also can Biles go for a TTY?

USOC Moves to Revoke USAG as National Governing Body

Well, it's happening. Or at least, it's starting to happen.

https://www.teamusa.org/News/2018/No...Governing-Body

Here's the letter/statement:

To all USAG gymnasts and the gymnastics community in the United States:

You began your journey in the sport of gymnastics for dozens of different reasons, but all of them trace back to gymnastics, and sport, being a positive influence in your life. It is supposed to be fun, to challenge you, and to teach you lessons about dedication, teamwork, excellence and overcoming adversity.

And while each of you has overcome adversity in different ways, some facing unimaginably terrible situations, everyone now faces the difficult reality of belonging to a national organization that continues to struggle to change its culture, to rebuild its leadership and to effectively serve its membership.

You deserve better.

So today I’m writing to let you know that the United States Olympic Committee has taken the first steps to revoke USA Gymnastics’ recognition as the National Governing Body for gymnastics in the United States and offered USA Gymnastics the option of surrendering its recognition voluntarily.

You might be asking why now? The short answer is that we believe the challenges facing the organization are simply more than it is capable of overcoming in its current form. We have worked closely with the new USAG board over recent months to support them, but despite diligent effort, the NGB continues to struggle. And that’s not fair to gymnasts around the country. Even weeks ago, I hoped there was a different way forward. But we now believe that is no longer possible.

You should know that revocation is subject to a process clearly outlined in the USOC Bylaws, and that process does not guarantee a particular outcome.

You’re no doubt wondering what this means for you and the gymnastics community. Until the process is completed and a final determination on USAG’s status is made, we will work to ensure that gymnastics training and competitions will continue as usual. I do not know how long the process will take, and we will make every effort to proceed quickly.

So I don’t have a perfect answer today. This is a situation in which there are no perfect solutions. Seeking to revoke recognition is not a decision that we have come to easily, but I believe it is the right action. In the short-term, we will work to ensure that America’s gymnasts have the support necessary to excel on and off the field of play. We are building plans to do just that no matter the outcome of the revocation process.

In the long-term, it will be the critically important responsibility of the recognized Gymnastics NGB, whether the existing organization or a new one, to lead gymnastics in the United States and rebuild a supportive community of athletes and clubs that can carry the sport forward for decades to come. We are prepared to identify and help build such an organization.

So, what’s next?

Strictly speaking, there is a process that must be followed based on the USOC Bylaws that lay out how we recognize, and revoke recognition, for an NGB. We have filed a complaint. A review panel will be identified, a hearing will be held, a report will be issued and a recommendation will be made. Then the USOC board will vote to continue to recognize USAG, or to revoke that status.

But that doesn’t really answer the meat of the question. You need to know what happens to gymnasts and your clubs if USA Gymnastics’ membership is revoked by the USOC. We are developing both a short- and longer-term plan and will communicate it as soon as we can.

The clearest answer I can provide is that gymnastics as a sport will remain a bedrock for the Olympic community in the United States. Young people will continue to participate, refine their techniques and have fun. Our Team USA athletes will continue to inspire us through their incredible accomplishments. We will ensure support for the Olympic hopefuls who may represent us in Tokyo in 2020.

And, over time, gymnastics clubs around the country may become members of a new organization that lives up to the expectations of the athletes and those that support them, their parents included. This would take time and a lot of hard work from many of us, and many of you. I know that collectively, we are up to the task should that assignment be given at the outcome of this process.

Today is only the beginning of an important process for gymnastics in the United States. The path is not crystal clear, but our motives are. So, we move forward, committed to ensuring the type of organization each gymnast and the coaches, trainers and club owners who support them, deserves.

Thank you for your support, and your contributions, as we collectively chart our path forward. And please don’t hesitate to contact me directly with your ideas and suggestions. I have set up an email address where you can reach me and my team. It is gymnastics@usoc.org.

Sincerely,
Sarah Hirshland

Scoring Systems

Looking at the numbers awarded this year, I think the scoring system actually did a good job balancing out Difficulty vs. Execution. You couldn't win medals with Great Execution by itself if your difficulty was significantly lower, but if your difficulty was only slightly higher, it couldn't carry you if you had execution mistakes.

The top 6 AA medalists ranked by D-score:

1. Biles: 25.4
2. De Jesus Dos Santos: 22.7
3. Melnikova: 22.6
4. Hurd: 22.3
5. Murakami: 22.0
6. Derwael: 21.3

The top 5 AA medalists ranked by E-score:

1. Derwael: 34.399
2. Murakami: 33.798
3. Hurd: 33.432
4. Melnikova: 33.198
5. De Jesus Dos Santos: 32.899
6. Biles: 32.191

Interesting that the rankings are completely opposite of eachother:

Biles: 1st in D, 6th in E
De Jesus Dos Santos: 2nd in D, 5 in E
Melnikova: 3rd in D, 4th in E
Hurd: 4th in D, 3rd in E
Murakami: 5th in D, 2nd in E
Derwael: 6th in D, 1st in E

E-score enthusiasts should actually be encouraged to see the final rankings primarily give an edge to those with higher E-scores. The two exceptions are Biles and Derwael. But I don't think that's a bad thing. Derwael's place shows that you DO need difficulty. That if it's significantly lower, it will hold you back, BUT that great Execution will keep you close enough to factor into the medals depending on how your higher-D competitors do that day.

And Biles placement just shows something that is always going to be a possibility in an additive system. Yes, her E-score was 1.5-2.0 lower than everyone else, but her D-score was 2.7 more than DJDS and 4.1 over Derwael. There was no way Derwael was going to make up 4 points just by execution. DJDS however, with her higher D, could have come close to Biles if she executed the way Derwael did.

Don't know how much sense that all made. I just think that for the most part, both D and E were valued well in relation to each other in this competition. I cannot think of any scoring system, other than the 10.0 that would prevent an athlete like Biles from winning with falls. So while I can understand those who simply want the 10.0 back, I don't think it makes sense to NOT want the 10.0 but also say an athlete should never be able to win with major errors.

Because I don't think we can have it both ways. Winning with errors will always be a possibility without the 10.0, but even in this system, winning with Biles' errors is going to be rare. Biles is just a rare gymnast. And, as I pointed out with DJDS, other athletes COULD have won this competition with superb execution and just a little more difficulty. But anyway, in general, the scoring looked like it worked pretty well.

2018 Worlds Doha - Conclusions & Best Moments

So Worlds is over for another year... :(

I'm going to have massive Post Worlds Depression over the next few days... So thought it might be a good idea to come up with this summary thread to keep some of the buzz going...

Feel free to post some of your Favourite Moments and your own thoughts / conclusions of the event...

Firstly! I think the most important thing to acknowledge is how few injuries their were this year compared to last year! :)

From memory there was only one withdrawal in the whole competition (Rene Cournoyer MAG AA)...? Which is amazing compared to last year where there were so many injuries obtained during competition / at Worlds.

I know Simakova/Sugihara were both injured to some extent, but that was mostly before competition from what I can tell...

But overall... I am very happy for the lack of an injury report!

Simone is obviously Simone.... But I think my gymnast of the meet is Artur Dalaloyan!

So happy for him to have such a great meet after how things went in the Men's Team Final... He was very upset, but I am very glad he has had the event he had so he can leave Doha very happy!

Beyond that... How does everyone feel about all the tiebreaks? It just seemed there were so many this championships!

Question About National Team Leos (All Countries, But Esp. USA)

Some of the USA Gymnasts have written about getting leotards for competitions (Shawn comes to mind for sure and I think Nastia) when they're given an assignment. They always get a package of workout and competition leotards along with some clothing to wear (which explains the matching T-shirts everyone is often photographed in) I was wondering first of all, what happens if you get more than one competition with the same leotard? For example, Nastia, Shawn, Shayla and Sam were all at Worlds with the gold medal team leo there, and then all four of them went on to compete in the same leo at the American Cup. Did they get another one or do they get a gift box and are told "Make sure you bring your Worlds leos with you too" or what happens exactly? And are there rules for when you can and can't wear your own clothing at meets? I know I've seen some candid shots of the girls in their own clothing, but then there are a lot where they're wearing the same T-shirt as the others on the team too.

And are other countries similar or do they have different policies?

2018 Worlds Prediction Contest - I actually did forget this year: 9th edition

Hahaha...so after threatening to forget last year, I actually did forget this year. I blame adulting. Thanks to Kalinina for saving our collective bacon!

Welcome to the 9th edition of the IG prediction contest! Nothing new to report this year; we're doing the same as last!

We're using Google Forms again to submit predictions so visit the links below!

Click HERE to submit your predictions!

Reminders for this year:
- I will NOT be accepting ANY forum submissions for predictions as long as the form is working well. If you post your predictions in this thread but do not submit them via the webform, your responses will NOT be entered and recorded.
- PLEASE save a hard copy of your predictions elsewhere in case the spreadsheet goes paflooey. I suggest copying them into this thread, but remember that I will NOT be using them as your official predictions unless something goes wrong (and I will notify everyone if that is the case).
- You CAN edit your predictions after you make them; just make sure to save the "Edit Response" link when you first submit so you can access it later. Your unique link will work up until I close down the ability to edit.

Rules for the actual point tallying are the same as before, which I will quote below:

Quote:

The rules are really simple. You post your predictions for the medal podium of each event, plus one alternate per podium.

Points
5 points --- each correct medal prediction
2.5 points --- each correct top 3 prediction, but incorrect medal prediction
.5 point --- if your alternate wins a medal.

For example, in '10 this was my AA prediction:

AA:
1 Musty
2 Bross
3 Aly
Alt: Jiang Yuyuan

The actual result was 1st: Musty, 2nd: Jiang, 3rd Bross. I received 5 points for correctly predicting Musty's medal position, 2.5 points for putting Bross on the podium but in the wrong position, and .5 points for having my alternate Jiang medal, for a total of 8 points. I didn't receive any points for Aly, since she didn't make the podium.

In the case of a tie for a medal, you still only receive points for each correct PLACEMENT. If Kyla and Simone tie in AA and you had them 1-2, you would receive 7.5 points for correctly predicting the gold medalist but incorrectly predicting the silver medalist (which would correctly be no one). If you like to tempt fate, feel free to put ties as your prediction BUT you may not have more than 3 people per podium plus one alternate (i.e. no eight way tie for gold! :p ;) )

Predictions are locked the day after prelims are completed, (before MAG AA starts) with NO EDITING ALLOWED. This gives everyone the best idea of who will be competing for the medals, but does not account for last minute substitutions due to federation swapping or injury. You are not required to predict your podium out of the official start list but may substitute anyone as you see fit; heck, put anyone on there! Do as you please. :)

The contest will run for WAG and MAG, and then one combined for those who submit in both categories. You are free to predict all the events or just a few; whatever you like. :) No deducting points for wrong answers, so why not? ;)
Predictions will CLOSE at I'm not sure at the moment but it will be right before MAG TF. You are welcome to make any changes to your predictions up until that point, but not after. Absolutely no editing or substitutions after the closing time will be allowed, so make sure you double and triple check! :)

Looking forward to another fun year!

Prediction Contest Alert

Gymfan15 usually sets these up but they haven't posted since March, and it would be a shame to miss a year, even if the number of submissioners is dwindled. I'll post a very basic thread for predictions tomorrow and be happy to tabulate scores (or if someone else wants to take charge of it, you're welcome to), but I'm putting this out there first in case Gymfan15 still wants to do it this year.

In any case, start thinking out your knowledgeable, well-thought out guesses for the women's golds and your wild, worth-a-shot-I've-heard-his-name-before gambles for the men's bronzes, and all the medals in between.

Olympic Specialist Qualification

Figured we might as well give it its own thread. Not just for U.S. discussion, although that will likely dominate given the circumstances. But it’s an interesting topic overall. What other top teams might try to qualify specialist via World Cups and who would they be? What gymnasts not from the Big 3 teams could potentially earn a nominative spot? Etc.

There is a decent general FAQ about qualification spots from the FIG here:

http://www.fig-gymnastics.com/public...0FAQ%20ART.pdf

And for the record, each country is only allowed to qualify 1 nominative spot through the World Cup series. If 2 gymnasts from the same country qualify on different events, the tie breaker is as follows:

“Maximum of One Quota Place per NOC and/or Athlete Qualifies on More than One Apparatus
In case of more than one (1) quota place per NOC or if an athlete qualifies on more than one
apparatus, the following procedure will apply to determine which quota place will be earned:

1. The highest average World Cup points on the respective apparatus from all competitions
attended in the series prevails
2. If they remain tied, the best average rank on the respective apparatus in the Qualifications of
all competitions attended in the series prevails”

Full tiebreak rules can be found here:

https://drive.google.com/drive/folde...NqMRVIpJU0hH8A

Interesting to note that it says the tie breaker is the highest average World Cup points from ALL competitions attended in the series, not just the top 3 competitions, which is what wins you the spot in the first place (if I’m reading that right).

My remaining question is, what do they mean when they say “World Cup points”? Do they mean the actual scores they received? Or do they mean points received based on a World Cup ranking system that assigns a certain total of points to an athlete based on their placement? (I hope it’s the latter, because that is more fair)

Questions about a New Gymnastics Doc Currently being Filmed?

My niece loves to watch Whitney Bjerken’s YouTube channel so her videos pop up in my YouTube feed quite often. And on a recent video (I believe Sept 23), she said she had a film crew at her house following her for some sort of piece on young people in gymnastics. I assumed it was possibly a local piece, but then I noticed in her video from Oct 2 that the film crew was still filming her her gym, throughout the entire team workout I believe, as you could see the boom mic when her coach was giving them their assignments.

Is anyone familiar with this channel/know what this is for? I’m just curious, against the backdrop of the current climate in women’s gymnastics thinking about what story people are trying to tell/what they might be trying to capture...I mean this girl seems like she’s definitely got a good head on her shoulders/is from a good family/I don’t know anything about her gym (Georgia Elite?)—but I’m just always a little nervous about what story people are trying to tell with these kinds of pieces these days, and wondered if anyone here knew anything more about it.

Here’s the links to the two videos I referenced:

The Greatest Olympic AA Battle Ever Turns 30

(x-posted from WWGym)

Thirty years ago today, Elena Shushunova and Daniela Silivas duked it out for the AA title. I know we're just going to get into Shush vs Silivas for the 9 trillionth time but with Shush gone
I couldn't let this pass, pun unintended. I know the overscoring was rampant here (Dagmar Kersten--nuff said) but I still believe the rightful champ was crowned that night.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8pRTpq1r9dg

Great Moments in Side-Eyes at 40:15 --I can't blame Shush, it seemed Silivas was bound and determined to get in her face and rattle her. Shush looks like she's within a heartbeat of standing up and pounding Silivas into a grease splotch on the ground.

Couple of things about Shush's death:
Bogoslovskoe Cemetery, her final resting place, this is where St. Petersburg buries some their finest, she is in good company. The cemetery is best known for the grave of Viktor Tsoi, a very popular Soviet rock star. http://www.saint-petersburg.com/ceme...skoe-cemetery/

Also, I found an article where Andrei Rodionenko gave a phone interview about Shush. He described her as a wonderful team captain but also alluded that she had major health
problems. However, according to him, they weren't gymnastics related. Given the interview with Elena's godfather where he said some of her health issues were gymnastics related I'm
skeptical of ARod's claims. Then again, he and his wife are the Patron Saints of BS so take it as you wish. I would love to see a copy of the autopsy but I don't know if it will ever be
released; how it works in Russia I don't know. https://ren.tv/novosti/2018-08-16/na...ny-shushunovoy

It's still hard to believe she's gone, it still hurts. :(

Romanian Gymnastics - ID & Clip Question

I was rewatching this montage again the other day and I noticed that at 1:35, right after they show Florica Leonida, there's a closeup of a girl in Deva in a black and white leotard and I'm trying to figure out who she is. This was the national team in Deva as of the beginning of 2001. Is it possibly Oana Bucerzau or maybe Mihaela Rapeanu?

Also I found this great training video and was wondering if anyone knows where to find more. The Channel doesn't say.

Gymcastic MLT interview

I feel like this may turn into a topic of conversation so I wanted to create a thread.

https://gymcastic.com/322-mary-lee-t...econciliation/

MLT is talking about the food at the ranch being bland and attributes the kids buying snacks to the food being so blah, and I actually wonder now if the food was terrible on purpose so the athletes would eat less?

She also said that things got much better after Rhonda came onto the scene (who was apparently appalled by the choices). Wasn't that like 2014 or so? I can't believe it took THAT long. Apparently, the 1st guy who made the food was terrible, so she had her daughter and Bela to take over. Naturally, that posed some issues.

2011 Romanian Juniors Question

While looking up some Romanian Gymnastics Stuff, I came across an interesting interview in the IG forum archives with Coach Cristinel Mica, where he mentioned some junior gymnasts:

Quote:

Cristinel Micu: We work with children of different ages.Gymnasts eligible in 2010 were: Asiana Peng, Cimpian Olivia ,Alisia Botnaru, Madalina Enache, Ghiciuc Carmen(9-10 yo). This year they will be joined by: Denisa Florea, Viorica Gopsa, Lazar Ana Maria,Ana Maria Bazavan, Gal Monalisa and Doris Ratiu.Besides that we still have six gymnasts but unfortunately, they were less likely to compete this year.
Next to me, these gymnasts are coached by:Gina Gogean,Menciu Luciana and Slabu Lenuta.
Does anyone know the DOBs of Viorica Gopsa, Ana Maria Lazar, Ana Maria Bazavan, and Gal Monalisa? Are they all 2001 girls? I can't find anything about them. And I assume they're all from Cetate Deva?

Also is Doris Ratiu the same person as Dorina Ratiu?

1997 Moceanu Fluff & Strug Interview??

I'm hoping someone can help me out here because I feel like I'm losing my mind. I was POSITIVE I remembered seeing a fluff about Dominique Moceanu at the 1997 Worlds. There were clips of her training and one of her hugging her little sister and I'm almost positive it was this meet because I feel like I can hear Robin Roberts' voice saying she was coached by "Liviu Mazilu and his wife Rodica Apateanu." But I just checked all the Worlds coverage I could find online and it isn't anywhere. There's a Mag 7 fluff, but Domi is not shown. Does anyone know or have this fluff I'm thinking of or am I misremembering?

Also, I found a fluff about the Mag 7 from the 1997 American Cup and thought I remembered seeing Strug interviewed afterwards, but it just ends at the end of the fluff. I thought I recalled Strug saying something about "Only time will tell," but I could be thinking of something else and I was sure I saw her wearing that navy outfit but maybe I only just saw it in IG.

If someone could please find these and post them so I can quit losing my mind I would REALLY appreciate it!

Naturally I can't find my own recordings, so I can't check the videos myself, grr!

MyKayla 2020?

The more I see of Jade Carey, the more I think if I were MyKayla Skinner I'd be seriously considering a run at Tokyo.

At this stage, I'd say a full competition ready MyKayla is better than Jade. Vault I think Jade is a better vaulter but the recent downgrades are odd. I think MyKayla would at least give the selection committee something to think about. Although I do think her exclusion from the 2016 team was the correct decision, you can't deny that she hit cold at trials and she has yet to miss a college routine in 2 years of competition (and her attitude seems to have improved). She has also stayed in incredible shape and sticks double doubles and DTYs week in week out

Jade has overall better form on skills, and of course chas more time to improve. But I would not count MyKayla out on snatching one of the individual spots.

She's a junior now, so graduating in May 2020,which is perfect if she started elite conditioning and training after this NCAA season.

For all tv commentators out there

I am just a gymnastics fan who is not a native English speaker (which is obvious).
I love gymnastics and I love American gymnastics as well, and I am grateful that the US National Championships could be followed even from outside of USA.

But.

Even with my not professional English knowledge I found it extremly annoying how the commentators were praising Simone Biles and how the coverage was focused on her. I was surprised the amount of the attention and praise she got- and other competitors didn't.

The commentators were weird at making negative comments for certain girls all the time (for example what was that "She has got a Barbie doll-haha pointing out Maggie Haney? She is a great coach producing happy and good gymnasts. Or it was for the blonde Riley? Anyway, I found it very much inappropriate.)
But at Simone even her failures were praised - I don't think she needs it. She is great, balanced and all these hype can turn against her.

I think ALL of the girls have worked hard who got there and were on a certain (high!) level. EVERYBODY has something where she is better at than Simone. Toepoints, flexibility, artistry, etc. For example I would have never given her the UB titles bc of (lack) of form. She has improved a LOT, but still not the best bar worker out there (of course it is my personal opinion).

It was like creating a new ikon, a new "brand" diverting the attention from all these scandals USAG is getting through.
She is great, but will never be the "best gymnast ever". She is great, she may be the most acrobatic artistic gymnast ever, and this current code is in her favor, but her lack of form, fluidity and artistry put some limits for her toward this title. In the past there were many great gymnast who were able to pull out great acrobatics (in that time) AND great artistry. We could name more Soviet and Romanian gymnasts (and for me from USA Shannon Miller was better overall than Simone - but it is just me).

Gymnastics lovers love the other girls too, and (would have) love(d) to watch great gymnastics from them. Despite the scoring system, gymnastics is more or less a subjective sport.
It was sad to see that the girls are convinced that they can be only second as maximum, and never be a champion, while Simone is out there. Why?! They are great, they can improve, Simone can have a bad day, code can change (ok, not for a while, but in the future) etc.

The competion should be encouraged among them, not a Godness creating! It isn't good for anyone (not even for Simone), annoying for fans (remember: gymnastics is quite subjective for a certain part) and we would like to see all those girls who are working hard for golds.
(And not good to favour acrobatics against artistry these much, but I love the Dutch girls answers for this trend! Their style and joy always make every competition a real experience :) And good to see that taller and less muscular athletes can have a chance too. )

I felt so disrespectful what these coverages did. I am sure lots of people would have been curious of Eaker, McCallum and the others too.

So please: it is okay if have your favourite one, but don't throw it into our face in every 5 seconds. And give the others chance to be visible too.

Thank you.

Floor Exercise Mat

Have they ever considered widening the floor exercise by a few feet?

I'm not usually a fan of changing equipment too much in any sport because I think part of the fun and creativity in sports comes from different people finding ways to adapt their different abilities to a fixed point. Plus, I want to see what humans are capable of, not what science and equipment and technology is capable of.

That said, gymnastics has evolved its equipment in the past. They rightly changed the vault for safety reasons and they've changed the materials that constructed the bars, beam and floor. Most importantly, when female gymnasts started doing "bigger" skills on uneven bars, they drastically widened the bars. Is it possible it's time to also widen the floor mat as gymnasts are doing much bigger passes?

Argument for:

1. I don't want to change the rules to excuse gymnasts' mistakes, but an errant step on a landing is already a deductible error. I'd rather see OOB penalties be reserved for when a gymnast either SIGNIFICANTLY doesn't control the landing OR because she wasn't properly trained and needs a half-mile run before she tumbles.

I'd like enough room on the floor ex so that there are 3 available stages of landing: 1. Sticking your pass perfectly 2. Taking a .1-.3 step or hop 3. Going out of bounds. It seems these days for many girls, if you don't absolutely stick your pass, you end up out of bounds. Simone is 4'9" and she has trouble staying in. It's got to be way harder for any girl taller than her.

Argument against:

1. The men are on average taller than the women and have been doing the women's harder passes successfully since the 90s and manage to stay in bounds. If the men can stay in bounds, then the women should learn how to as well.

(although, I don't know for sure if this is true. I also don't know if the fact that the men don't leap and dance, plus get to stop, breathe and collect themselves slightly before their passes helps them control the pass)

In conclusion:

I don't know if I'm for or against changing it. Just curious what other people's thoughts are. I'd love to see data on the # of OOB penalties from previous decades compared to now, for both men and women. If the data shows there are significantly more OOB penalties now, that might signify the penalties are less because athletes are tumbling worse, than simply because the skills have gotten bigger and if so, that might be a reason to give them all a little more room.

Terry Gannon is much improved from Al Trautwig

While I keep hoping that they replace Tim with Bart Connor, I've accepted it's not gong to happen.

I was rereading Shannon's mom's book and she was talking about the difficulties Shannon had learning front tumbling. At one point she said Steve had forgotten she was a left twister and since she was going forward, she hadn't understood it would be easier to twist in the other direction.

So if you're tumbling forward, you twist differently then if you are trying to tumble backward in a twisting salto?

Fluffs With Gymnasts At School?

One of our TV stations has been doing marathons of all the Degrassi series and I got the idea of doing a montage showing all clips of elite gymnasts in school from fluff pieces over the years. Can anyone recommend some good clips?

The ones I have are:
Kim Zmeskal - Making Of A Champion documentary. (Other Karolyi girls are shown too)
Jennie Thompson - 1994 American Cup
Dominique Dawes - 1992 Dodge Challenge
Shannon Miller - Can't remember the meet but I saved the fluff ages ago - it's 1992 or 1993.
Dominique Moceanu - 1997 International Tram Championship
Chellsie Memmel - 2005 American Cup
Shawn Johnson - 2007 American Cup
Vanessa Atler - 1997 American Cup
Mo Huilan - 1996 Olynpic Compulsory
Romania - 1980s documentary on Silivas & Dobre, 2004 Athens TF, and Romanian equivalent to CNN in 2008.

There's also a clip of Nastia Liukin & the other WOGA girls jogging in what looks like a P.E. class at a school. Not sure if I'll count it or not (2005 USAs if anyone is curious)

Am I missing any that were shown at some point?

Thanks in advance.

2018 WAG European Championships

The competition is August 2-5 in Glasgow. Nominative rosters came out today: http://www.ueg.org/en/A-line-up-of-s...018-07-03-1800

To save you some clicks...

Top senior teams:
BEL - Brassart, Derwael, Klinckaert, Hermans, Meyers
FRA - Boyer, DJDS, Devillard, Bossu, Charpy
GBR - Kinsella, Stanhope, Simm, Fenton, B. Downie
GER - Scheder, Schaefer, Voss, Griesser, Bui
ITA - Maggio, Basile, Meneghini, Grisetti, Mori
NED - van Pol, Thorsdottir, Volleman, van Gerner, S. Wevers
ROU - Ivanus, Ocolisan, Golgota, Ghiciuc, Iaco
RUS - Komova, Melnikova, Simakova, Perebinosova, Kharenkova

The Russian roster is definitely going to change - I'm guessing Ilyankova over Perebinosova and Akhaimova over Kharenkova.

I also noticed that Taeja James isn't listed for GB...

Top junior teams:
FRA - Forestier, Heduit, Letrange-Mouakit, Pontlevoy, Wahl
GBR - Morgan, Jakubczyk, Achampong, Young, Hilton
ITA - D'Amato, D'Amato, Iorio, Villa (only 4 were listed)
ROU - Puiu, Duta, Stanciulescu, Sfiringu, Berar
RUS - Belousova, Astafyeva, Vorona, Urazova, Klimenko

Russia, France, and Italy will battle for gold, but IMO Russia is unbeatable if they hit - especially if they replace Belousova with Irina Komnova, which I reckon they will after their respective Russian Cup performances.

Should be a good meet!

I really hope they fix it soon. It's a shame it seems abandoned but this has happened before, at least we read the titles. I don't know why I'm bothering to write this when I know no one can read it. I hope it's back before USAG summer meets at the very least but so much has happened in USA and internationally. Maybe MilkTea is right they do it purposefully to drive conversation to their FB page. I remember him suggesting that the last time it happened. Ok I'll stop writing to myself now. :)

Sexual Abuse Scandal hits Brazilian Gymnastics

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-43966284

Huge abuse case in Brazilian's gymnastics, specifically in MAG.

Petrix and Diego have said horrible things about how they were treated for years... Ugh feel horrible for these kids. The bullying and sexual abuse was awful. 42 gymnasts have come forward at this time so far. Sergio Sasaki also trained with this coach but hasn't said anything yet.

My experience with WAG was very positive. I know of one story but it was not really abuse, a coach was fired for dating an underage gymnast. He was young himself so I didn't really see it as a big deal at the time although now it does sounds a little off. That's the extent of my experience though. MAG seems to have been much worse.

Tokyo 2020 individual qualifier rules

So this weekends gymnastics was my first real insight into these qualifying rules and they have my blood boiling. Denis Abalyzin missing workds as he hooes to qualify as an individual to the 2020 Olympics. This is not fair. Athletes should not have to miss world competition and the opportunities that present themselves in their short carreers. This is just not right. I believe Diego Hypoliti from Brazil is doing the sane thing. This makes me so mad.

On the womens side of gymnastics the FIG cover themselves by saying that top countries can have upto 6 atheltes. 4 on the team and two individuals. For a country like the USA where the team is top priority i can see a team of four going and then some of the best individulas in the workd not eligible as they competed for USA in the previous years. This qualifying system really has not been thought out too well. Seems ridiculous. Anyone else frustrated by it??

Largest MAG video channel removed from the air Marcos GymArt

The Italian Federation through Mr. David Ciaralli, removed the video channel Marcos GymArt

The withdrawal was summary without the owner of the canal could defend itself. The Federation could have contacted the owner of the channel and requested the withdrawal of the videos, however, preferred to report and so, we fans of gymnastics we lost since this channel was reference in videos including counting on several competitions considered a rarity, an attitude unthinking leaves orphans fans of a sport that is not much publicized, something that this channel did in order to popularize the sport.
I hope that the Italian Federation can rethink its position and with that the channel can return to work.

USA MAG success over the years

I know we're in the midst of World Cup events and NCAA competition is revving up toward post-season, but I decided to procrastinate working out by crunching some numbers :) I'm pretty familiar with the USA women's team results/success over the years but not so much with the men....so I tallied all individual medals won by US men in World and Olympic competition (since 1950) and was kind of surprised at how few (comparatively) medals they have won (of course the 1984 medals should be taken with a grain of salt due to the boycot):

Danell Leyva 6
Kurt Thomas 6
Paul Hamm 5
Bart Conner 3
Mitch Gaylord 3
Peter Vidmar 2
Jonathon Horton 2
Jake Dalton 2
Jair Lynch 1
Trent Dimas 1
Paul O'Neill 1
Tim Daggett 1
Sean Townsend 1
Alexander Artemev 1
Brandon Wynn 1 (forgot about this one)
Steven Legendre 1
John Orozco 1
Donnell Whittenburg 1
Peter Kormann 1
Yul Moldauer 1
(Team medals) 8

So, only 20 men for a total of 41 medals (and only 8 have one more than 1), but 16 medals in the last 10 years. This is compared to 43 medal winners and a total of 127 medals for the women (hope I counted this up correctly). Discussion could be started debating why this is so. Also interesting to think about who are the top American male gymnasts of all time (I think I remember reading a thread regarding this). I still think it's a toss-up between Kurt and Paul. Leyva I think is 3rd best for sure.

Birmingham World Cup | March 21-22, 2018

Final results:

Well, Nikita Nagornyy pretty much had this but started to fall apart in the second half of the competition where he landed his Dragulescu very short (his run seemed off), a minor slip on pbars, and a fall on a layout Tkachev on high bar. Floor was great, although he did an easier routine and had 0.4 OOB.

Shogo Nonomura hit all six routines solidly. He's not quite as sharp as he was in the past, but he still has very nice qualities.

James Hall and Dom Cunningham had good days. James had a big stumble on vault and some issues on pbars, but otherwise he did well.

Sun Wei - ugh, why can't we have nice things????!!! Such a beautiful gymnast but so frustrating. Practically the MAG equivalent of Huang Qiushuang.

Donothan Bailey had a rough day. He had two splats on floor and took an extra swing on high bar because his giant out of Tkachev didn't have enough juice. He also underperformed on pommel horse, which is usually his best.

Who should fill Fragapane's and Fenton's spots at Commonwealth Games?

I am assuming Fenton will be out due to her low scores/injuries at Nationals...I would have included Methuen and Emily Thomas but they are already on the Welsh team.
Who should fill Fragapane's and Fenton's spots at Commonwealth Games?

Change of Worlds/Olympic format again?

One of my gym friends brought this to my attention. Some murmurs of possible changes (again!) in the World and Olympic competition format after 2020. These are from the US Men's Program Committee minutes:

The split of team and individual Worlds is ??? They did that in 1994 where Individual AA/EF Worlds were held in Brisbane, Australia in spring, and Team Worlds were held in Dortmund, Germany later that fall. That's the only time I recall when that happened.

I think most people would be on board with the 5+1 Olympic teams again if there's any truth to that.

All these changes though. It's starting to feel like the 1990s again where FIG experimented with a lot of different formats.

P.S. Obviously 2012 has passed, so I'm inclined to believe that's just a typo.
Change of Worlds/Olympic format again?

More Successful Career

Little game in the off-season. I’ll list two gymnasts. The next poster answers who they think had the better career of the two and why and lists two more gymnasts and so on. If you want to hear more opinions just list the same two. But no just going back to a previous pairing and not answering and no talking about previous pairings.

Example:

Person 1:A or B?

Person 2: B because blah. C or D?

Person 3:

Things that are ok: C because blah; E or F?
C because blah; C or D? (to keep the next person on C or D)
C because blah; A or B?

Things that are not ok: C because blah; I think A is better than B
A because blah; E or F?

People can use whatever criteria they want and no disparaging others opinions

So I’ll start

Nadia vs. Teodora

Ok. I was bored and was rewatching the 1976 Olympics. Had never really watched all the routines before. This has probably been discussed to death, but I don’t see any threads on it since it was so long ago. Does anybody here know the politics of the situation? I mean, why was Nadia the “chosen one”? Seems like Teodora had just as much difficulty, and I actually prefer Teodora’s floor exercise to Nadia’s. In fact, I think Teodora should have been in floor finals and won the gold over Kim. What is the conventional wisdom on this subject?
Nadia vs. Teodora

floor exercise mat colors

Was watching one of my favorite floor routines and released how yellow the floor mat was. Hit me that I had never remembered seeing a yellow floor mat. Then, of course, I tried to remember the different colored floor exercise mats I've seen. Generally I think of floor mats as blue.

What are the different colors you've seen?

Is there an official rule about floor exercise colors?

I see a future of sponsors or designs on the actual floor mats themselves.

Kohei attending a World Cup is still a shock to me because it's been 10+ years since he's been to one lol. I'm willing to bet the Chinese heard the news of Kohei going that they decided to send their very best to this.

Good to see some Russians on the list because they haven't been to Doha in years. Denis Ablyazin was on the list originally but he's now replaced with Dmitry Lankin.

And probably the most surprising entries are the North Koreans with 3 MAG and 3 WAG. Ri Se Gwang is marking his return to competition since Rio.

Meanwhile I'm surprised Anamaria Ocolisan still exists.

Desperately Seeking 2 Skating Books

Hi Everyone,
I'm desperately trying to locate 2 figure skating books for my niece that our library no longer carries. I can't recall the titles.

The first is a hardcover, presumably adult nonfiction, almost an inch thick with a yellow dust jacket and about the size of a coffee table book if I remember correctly. It features extensive chapters on reel-to-reel music editing and choreography among other things and I think there was a chapter on patch sessions too.

The second is a children's nonfiction, slightly longer than the usual "picture nonfiction"
books for kids. IT's from the 70's or early 80's and is the story of an aspiring young skater named Karen and her younger sister Wendy. The cover photo was Karen in a pale blue skating dress and there are lots of photos inside. Also on the inside covers are several diagrams of various school figures.

If anyone can help me by posting the titles or authors of these books I would really appreciate being able to surprise my niece!

USA gymnasts appreciation thread, 2018 where do we go from here?

So who is in the running for the 2nd AmCup spot? Who do we think is going to show up for verification and spots in the World Cup Comps?

Regarding the upcoming world cup selections, I'm not even sure who's training at this point and who's not... or rather who's in peak shape.

All the newly turned seniors should make things VERY interesting this year. Also, do we know the status of previously injured gymnasts? Such as Riley McCusker, etc...

We do know Hurd was announced as the first US spot for the American cup... also that Chiles was announced for the Stuttgart cup... are these two the only confirmed gymnasts thus far? I suppose we won't know much more until after the verification meet at LSU.

Lifetime Movie - The Simone Biles Story

To turn things more light and fluffy, did anyone catch the movie tonight? If yes, did you learn anything new? Was it good? And most importantly, is there anywhere else I can watch it since I was out and missed it?

Who Would You Like as the New NTC?

When Rhonda was offered her current position, I was hoping it would be her. Since then, it has come out that she has no interest in the position. The people I would like in the position are gym owners (except Alexandrov). I think he would do well in the position for one and the thought of what it would do to the Rottenenkos!!!

I don’t see anyone in NCAA qualified for it.

Tom Forster owns Aerials but he doesn’t have any major elites currently.

Melbourne world cup, February 22 - 25

There will be a meet and greet with Aly Raisman, aawwww... that's cool! Probably due in part to Brestyan having a contract with the Ozzie fed up until April, IIRC.

So the Ozzie girls will represent: Godwin, Mizzen, Nedov, Brown which is awesome and all... but hello it's the international senior debut of Chen Yile! Yay!! (UB + BB). Also on the nominative registration: Liu Jinru VT, Du Siyu UB, Li Qi BB... Yay!!!!

Help ID'ing Floor Music

Could someone please tell me if they know the titles of these four pieces of floor music?

1. Jaycie Phelps, 1994: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nSERMGR6mOk
It sounds like it might have been a film soundtrack of some sort?

2. Amanda Borden, 1997 Ladies Pro: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gx29Crmwinc

It sounds like two pieces, including a really cool techno piece. I'd love to know both, but especially the techno. I believe she also used it at a 1996 invitational (Budget?)

3. Dominique Moceanu, 1997 Battle Of Sexes FX. I can't find a video of just her but again, it's a really cool techno piece. She also used it on tour that year.

Thanks in advance. I really love all of these (ESPECIALLY Jaycie's!) and want to get the original pieces for my Ipod.

Who Are These Gymnasts?

I was watching a montage (but can't remember the title) and it featured some Romanian girls I've never heard of before from between 2004-2006: Bibiana Ostoc, Catalina Dumitrescu, & Alina Munteanu. Does anyone know these girls' DOBs & clubs as well as anything else about them?

Thanks in advance.

Mattie Larson

Hi, everyone.

I haven't posted in a long, long time. I took a break from following gymnastics. But like everyone else, I have followed the Nassar case. Pretty much everything that could be said about this tragedy has already been said, but there is one person about whom I feel we cannot say enough - Mattie.

I am just gutted for her, or at least for the person she was back then. Thankfully, it sounds like she has come a long way since leaving elite. But my heart still breaks for her. I feel so badly that she was suffering so much while we were sitting in the stands or in front of the TV admiring her beautiful floor routines.

She, more than any of her teammates who have spoken out, was brave enough to identify specific people at USAG who mistreated her, and how they enabled Larry Nassar. What kills me the most is that, if she had told her story even just two years ago, if she had stood alone, without the support of all these other women, everyone would have maligned her - just like they did to Dominique Moceanu and Jennifer Sey, and Jamie Dantzscher when she first accused Nassar. They would have called her a whiner. They would have accused her of being bitter about the way her elite career ended, or wanting her fifteen minutes of fame. They would have pointed to her performance at 2010 Worlds as an example that she simply wasn't mentally tough enough for the sport.

I am devastated that this revelation of mass sexual abuse had to occur before anyone paid any attention to the other forms of abuse these athletes suffered. I feel so distressed that all this probably had to happen before anyone would have taken Mattie seriously. My heart just aches for her, and I wanted to give her a hug throughout her entire impact statement. I still want to give her a hug!

I find myself wondering if there is anything we can do for her now - other than make the changes she and all the others so rightfully deserve. Any ideas?

Edit: How about an appreciation thread?
