Inspiring:
I thought Bogi's return in 1995/1996 was quite admirable. Her 2nd place AA at Euros was impressive, considering the deeper fields at that time. She still had her trademark grace, along with enough difficulty for the quad, even if it wasn't top notch (she was already being outpaced in 1992).
I remember wanting Kim Zmeskal to do well in 1998, if mostly for sentimental reasons. She looked pretty good in 1998 US Nationals, all things considered, even if she wasn't up there with the top girls. She was still solid, had great form, and good amplitude in tumbling/ vaulting. Too bad things didn't pan out for her. I wonder what could have happened, had she not gotten injured.
I wasn't a huge Ponor fan during her heyday in 2004, mostly due to what I thought was sloppy form (though, little did I know at the time, I took her for granted, considering what we see from today's gymnasts in terms of difficulty over form, and general lack of grace). However, I couldn't help but respect her return in 2011, especially considering the medal success she's had. I genuinely appreciate her style and presentation on FX. Kudos to her for being able to compete at the highest level for so long. She's insanely fit.
Not-so-inspiring:
I always liked Nastia, but it pained me to watch her rushed attempt at making London Olys in 2012. It is obvious that she had started training too late and was simply not prepared, which made me wonder if she was under external pressure to try for it. She had nothing to prove after Beijing and all of her Worlds success.
I know I'll think of more later, but share your thoughts!
