FIG Executive Committee Meeting - Feb 2017

http://ift.tt/2liAqFK

The biggest news from this is that Steve Butcher has resigned as President of the Men’s Technical Committee.

Quote:

Upon the proposal of the President, the Executive Committee named Steve Butcher to the position of Technical Coordinator. This new role, provided for in the new article 25 of the Statutes, has been integrated into the administrative structure of the FIG.

Steve Butcher will take up his new function on March 1, 2017. He has chosen to resign as President of the Men’s Artistic Gymnastics Technical Committee, to which he had been re-elected in October for a four-year mandate, to avoid any possible conflict of interest.

Technical committee composition changes:

Men’s Artistic Gymnastics

With the resignation of Steve Butcher, Arturs Mickevics (LAT) becomes President. Huang Liping (CHN), the next in line according to the election results, will occupy the vacant chair on the committee.

Newly approved nationality changes:

Pakhnyuk becoming Ukrainian again is a very good thing. Glad his change went through because there were concerns about it.

Ekaterina Tishkova is nothing special, so Azerbaijan gains another D-list Russian lol.

I didn't even know Bence Talas was still around. Don't think I've seen him since 2013 Worlds or so.

More to Vitaly Marinitch's 'resignation' from OTC

This deserves a separate thread from the Dr. Nassar abuse investigations, though it's another incident of Steve Penny and USA Gymnastics trying to cover their asses.

This comes from the latest episode of GymCastic just released today. It's worth listening to if you want the specific details:
http://ift.tt/2mcRyhg

Alaina Legendre (Steven Legendre's wife) says she was sexually assaulted by Vitaly Marinitch at the hotel bar after 2014 nationals in Pittsburgh. She was with Steven and Jake Dalton and his wife at the bar. She saw Vitaly Marinitch at the bar went over to say hi to him at the bar and make conversation like most friends would. Clearly he was drunk and at some point put his arm around her then got bold enough to his hand down the back of her pants (not once but twice). Steven knew about it right away and confronted Marinitch who seemed to brush it off as no big deal.

There were meetings with the men's committee, Steve Penny, OTC coaches, team members, and others to address the incident. Marinitch apologized various times (including personal apologies) to the Legendres, but Steven says he learned from teammates about other similar incidents Marinitch has had with women. His wife's assault isn't the only one.

Marinitch was removed as head coach of the men's World team and even prohibited from traveling internationally for a period, but he managed to go to Rio and coach as usual. He then submitted his resignation from OTC after the Olympics to pursue other opportunities, but the Legendres pretty much imply that his voluntary resignation is bullsh-t and Steve Penny/USAG are trying to hide the real story. Plus the Legendres say too many people know about the Pittsburgh incident at this point that it can't simply be swept under the rug anymore.

As of yet law enforcement hasn't been involved in any of the alleged incidents. Alaina says she was apprehensive of speaking up until now because she didn't want to jeopardize Steven's career.

since when did ****** become a dirty word?

When I posted recently about Dr. Nassar's so-called "therapy," I used the correct name for an intimate part of the female anatomy. It was censored and covered with asterisks. My question is, when did this word become a dirty word? I can see censoring an old four-letter Anglo-Saxonism for this part (beginning with "c"), which I do not use and never will, or other contemptible (usually male) terms. It was excruciating to hear news people trying to find euphemisms for a crude term (one woman snickered and said "kitty cat"). For god's sake, it used to be, and rather recently, that nobody could say "condom" on the air. Americans seem to be obsessed with sex but don't want to deal with it in correct, everyday language! ****** is not a dirty word!

did you see "60 Minutes" last night?

Did any of you see "60 minutes" last night? It was pretty sickening. Three gymnasts (I had never heard of two of them, but one, as some of you suggested on other threads, was Jamie Dantzscher) told their stories of being sexually molested by Dr. Nassar (of course, according to him it was valid "therapy"). (Yes, sticking his ungloved fingers up a girl's ****** was valid therapy for sore backs and hips). I know that some perverts are attracted to certain fields because it gives them access to children, but this? It was said that the Karolis did not want to appear on screen for this expose (surprise, surprise!), but I must admit that Dr. Nassar did look really good in striped clothing!

Strange thing about NBC- biased for Chinese men and against Chinese women, 2008 worst

NBC is insanely biased in favor of Chinese male gymnastics, especialy that freak Tim Daggett who is probably in love with some of them, and insanely biased against Chinese women. The worst of all was their effing disgusting display at the 2008 Olympics which should have had the entire crew fired and banned from the sport on the spot.

Here are some obvious examples.

Li Xiaoshaung- Tim's hard on for him was one of the most pathetic and embarassing things ever. Here are some of Tim's comments during the 96 Olympics.
"He has a great shot of 6 or more gold medals here." WTF!?!!?! His only chances of gold were Team, All Around, floor, vault, so 4 absolute max, and no way in hell anyone expected him to be able to win all 4 of those either. No Timmy, your mancrush was not the 92 Scherbo. If anyone could potentially win 6 golds maybe it would be Nemov with his absolute best routines on floor, vault, parallel bars, high bars, and pommel horse in event finals, along with the potential All Around and floor golds. "If all of Scherbo, Nemov, Li hit, Li wins all the all around easily." Ummm no Tim, he would not be a lock in that scenrio, especialy over Nemov, and in fact I would sightly favor Nemov to win. As it was Nemov probably had more small mistakes in the AA than Li, he had a big break on one of his major strength moves on rings, a really bad landing on vault with several steps/hops and losing a tenth in distance deduction which is rare for him, a couple hops on parallel bars, a hop on high bar, and left out a key skill which dropped his start value to 9.9 on floor plus a hop. Li had only a small step on vault, a pretty bad landing (which he was barely deducted for) on parallel bars. Li still won by less than half a tenth, and that was with being oversccored on vault, parallel bars, and high bar, to the point many of his competitors (all but the classy Nemov) thrashed the judges for overmarking him. Even one of his own teammates. Nemov and Li both hitting Nemov is better on everything but rings, and maybe floor where they are about equal. Scherbo is better than Li on most events both hitting too, but he is so weak on rings, Li probably beats him by that point.

Chinese mens team in general at the 96 Games- He kept harping on how Russia were a weak and undeserving winner and only won since the Chinese men fell. In fact the Chinese mens team didnt make any major errors until high bar and were already trailing basically the entire compulsory and over half the optional around. The Chinese men also won the 94 and 95 Team worlds with Russia making alot of mistakes, similar to Russia in 96 having an easy ride in Atlanta after China blew high bar in optionals, but dont let facts get in the way. Not to mention Russia were missing both Shabaev and Karbanenko, and had they been there it would be even harder for a perfect China to have beaten them. They won with less than their best team to begin with, which Tim the freak of course doesnt even mention.

Chinese womens team at the 2000 Games- He reminded everyone about 100 times over their bronze at the 99 worlds was in China. Neglecting to point out the Chinese women medalled at the 95 and 97 worlds which were not in China. He acted like their bronze in the Team Event was some shock from the heavens. He said repeatedly nobody on the team could vault or tumble even though Dong Fangxiao, Kui Yuanyuan, and Yang Yung who were all very strong on both events were on the team. He did praise Ling Jie's work on bars, which was the only compliments he gave anyone, other than talking about how amazing their "overperforming" supposably was.

Li Xiaopeng- His bias to him in general nearly rivalled his ridiculous bias to Li X. He even called him a more talented gymnast than Nemov. He also said his parallel bars routine in the 2000 event final was way better than anyone else even though he won by only 0.013 and the top 5 were all within half a tenth of him.

Commentary during Mens Team final in 2000- He said how every Olympics the Chinese mens team had the best team and were expected to dominate, and how the 84 Olympics (of course, ROTFL) was the only time they were legitimately beaten by someone else. What nonsense. The Soviet Union had a better team than China by a huge margin in both 88 and 92. 96 and 84 were the only previous years they even had a potential gold team and they won in 84 only due to not failing mentally but ridiculous home cooked scoring for the U.S men, which of course Tim neglects to mention (wonder why).

Commentary on Yang Yilin during 2008 Games- He whines and gripes about all her scores. He doesnt mention how unfair it was her vault got the same E score as Shawn's skunky Amanar (which probably should have been downgraded, giving Yilin AA silver easily) in the AA finals. He whines about every single score she gets minus vault being some massive overscore, even though she was rightly hit for her balance breaks on beam, and execution issues on floor, and her bars were underscored compared to the bloated scores Nastia and Shawn, especialy Nastia, were getting.

Commentary during 2008 Olympic bars final- Nastia robbed of gold, dont make me laugh. Kexin and Yilin both clearly beat her and Tweddle should have too, Nastia Tim's favorite hard on amongst the women ever probably, deserved only 4th place. Anyway I will try and keep this on China, he whined about Kexin's supposed overscore when her score in fact reflected the deductions since her best routine is capable of easily going above 17, and said nothing about Yilin's underscored routine which was ridiculously placed behind Nastia, and should have beaten both a subpar Kexin and Nastia that night. He then talked about how Nastia not winning bars gold over both Chinese girls was the biggest controversy in decades the whole medal ceremony (along with Elfi), when the rest of the world were only wondering why Nastia had stopped a Chinese 1-2 finish.

Commentary during 2008 Olympic beam final- Tim and Elfi whine about everyones scores but Nastia and Shawn even though they go 1-2. Elfi also says if Shawn and Nastia hit they are guaranteed 1-2, even though it is a FACT a hit Li Shanshan beats both 110% (even Tim seemed to know this, Elfi was the one clueless, dumb bitch), and a hit Pavlova, hit Cheng Fei, and 1 or 2 others can be competitive with them too. You would think they were Simone and Aly on floor the way they were talking.

Commentry during 2008 Olympic high bars final- He talks about how amazing Zou Kai's high bar work was and how he fully deserved the gold, when in fact everywhere else, not just in America, Jonathan Horton was robbed of the gold medal. He then makes one of the most ridiculous and obnoxious statements ever at the end "the judging has been a huge topic here at these Games, especialy regarding China, for all the wrong reasons, but here they got one right." What a joke, the most controversial and ridiculous Chinese medal of the whole Games, is the one they got right in Tim and Elfi planet.

I dont know what it is, maybe the Chinese women dont turn Tim's crank like the Chinese men do. Either way he is ridiculously biased against Chinese women and in favor of Chinese men to laughable degrees.
Strange thing about NBC- biased for Chinese men and against Chinese women, 2008 worst

GOAT Series-Vault

I'm introducing a series of greatest of all time gymnasts on each apparatus. I do not want to post them all at once because I want everyone to really focus on each event one at a time. Please consider difficulty, form, aesthetics and results as well as intangibles.

I'll start off with Prudanova. 20 years after she competed this vault it still has the second highest start value of any vault. Others I considered are Amanar, Maroney, and Chusovitina for the longevity of her career. I'm Prudanova first and Amanar a close second. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

John Orozco and Alec Yoder mark their return to competition after season-ending injuries last year.

I've not seen any changes to the start list yet, but I can already say Matt Wenske won't be competing because he ruptured his meniscus in training a couple of weeks ago. I believe he's due to have surgery soon. He's probably going to miss the rest of NCAA season, but he could recover in time for nationals this summer.

Out of the current national team, I believe the only missing names are Danell Leyva, Brandon Wynn, Paul Ruggeri, and CJ Maestas. Leyva is essentially retired (not official) living in LA trying to get into acting. Ruggeri and Wynn left USOTC. Ruggeri moved to New Jersey, bought a house, and now trains and coaches at US Gymnastics Development Center. Wynn is back at Ohio State sort of training and promoting his fitness business with Jake Dalton. No idea what Maestas has been up to since trials.

Is Ragan Smith the next great American gymnast

It seems Ragan Smith has a great shot at the world AA title this year but is she good for the long haul? Last year I thought her only great event was beam, elsewhere she was merely solid. This year early on she shows some big improvements. She can capatilize for now on Biles, Raisman, Douglas, Hernandez all taking a break, but what happens when those big girls of U.S gymnastics are all back. Is she strong enough.

What do you think.

One-event specialists' other good event(s)

Who are your favorite one-event specialists with one or more other events that show (or showed) potential?

He Kexin had a nice, clean DTY in Beijing prelims.

I always thought McKayla Maroney had a great look/ lines on UB, although she did not have a difficult routine and was inconsistent with it. Her releases were sky-high and she had a nice Pak. I enjoyed her FX, too, and it's a shame she was too injured to compete it in London.

Ashton Locklear has an elegant look on beam, at least at Nationals (or was it Classic?) in 2016; seems like she cleaned up a bit.

I know there are more...

Favorite clutch performances

Discuss some of your favorite or memorable clutch performances in gymnastics.

One that comes to mind is Mohini Bahardwaj's commendable and unexpected beam set during Athens TF; I thought Kupets was slated to do beam, but was too injured, so Mohini had to step in.

Maybe this doesn't quite count, but it was a relief to see Seda and Daria hit beam for Team Russia during Rio prelims, after Mustafina and Melka uncharacteristically fell. If all four had majorly botched beam, perhaps Russia would not have advanced to TF?

I know there are many more that I can't recall!

Why is Shang so underscored. :(

She is IMO severely underscored in E scoring on all 3 of bars, beam, and floor. She clearly deserved an AA medal at the 2012 Olympics, and was robbed of placements and better scores many other times. It is so sad, and I hope the Chinese federation looks into this since it cant continue much longer. Such a charming and nice girl too.

It's the off season still guys so here we can scavenge for any little bits of gymnastics...

Chusovitina tried a punch front mount to immediate front tuck onto the beam. I've dreamt of this combo since the mid 90's so it's pretty wild to see someone attempt it! Let alone queen Chuso who's only turning 42 years young in a few months!!!
