There is alot of talk here of weak eras and strong eras. However taking each quad since 73-76 (the unofficial start of modern gymnastics for most us) and rate each up to now in terms of strongest overall competition and weakest. Here would be my rankings:
1. 89-92: Just an incredible quad with so many great gymnasts. 89 worlds is still the best in history. 92 Barcelona is my favorite all around womens gymnatics Games in history.
2. 85-88: Amazingly high standard of gymnastics, particularly at the 87 worlds and 88 Olympics. People like Silivas, Shushunova, Dobre, even Boginskaya literally touching perfection.
3. 97-2000: Very competitive AA quad from start to finish.
4. 77-80: Very competitive and deep from start to finish, but could have been even better without all the injuries. Nadia's decline from 75-76 helped it get more competitive too, which shows how the competitive evaluation can get backwards at times too.
5. 93-96: Amazingly strong field in 95 and 96, but less so in 94, and much less so in 93.
6. 2009-2012: Field was probably at its strongest in 2010. 2009 was very weak. 2011 and 2012 were decent competition wise, but not great.
7. 2013-2016: Some people recently (mostly those frustrated with Biles's dominance) call this the worst era ever, but IMO it isnt even close, although it is far from the best too.
8. 81-84: Too many injuries, and the LA boycott really wrecked things for the quad, even if it was just one year.
9. 73-76: Not that much depth, mostly about Tourischeva and Korbut in the first half, and Commaneci and Kim in the second.
10. 2001-2004: Just meh, this and the one to come are the only periods that were truly "weak".
11. 2005-2008: Far and away the worst, and nothing comes close. Although Beijing was a much better field than Athens, 2001-2003 were all better years than 2005-2007, so it still comes ahead as a quad.
