Tumbling/tramp experts?

Sorry to start a new post and one in the wrong forum (come on, there's one solitary thread in the acro forum..)

But is anyone here also a tramp/tumbling expert? The European Champs are starting today in my city, and I would like to ask someone a few questions for a local uni publication.

Biles and Douglas to both continue elite after Rio?

I don't know about the rest of you but I am getting the impression that Biles and Douglas will both probably end up continuing with elite after Rio. What do you think.

Rio Injury Thread: "Abandon All Hope, Ye Who Enter Here"

Recently, it's been a cruel few weeks to gymnasts and gym fans. The Gym Gods have claimed quite a few victims and even starting an 'injury thread' seems to be tempting fate to add to the list. Nonetheless, they're happening despite the ritual sacrifices I've been offering to Mt. Olympus.

Please add to the list. These a few recently, off the top of my head.

US Nationals seating question

Delurking to ask a quick question:

If I want to have a good view of beam at nationals, what sections should I be looking at? The seating chart shows only the men's apparatus setup. Presumably the beam goes where pommels/still rings are, but I've never been to a meet before so I'm not sure.

Thanks in advance for your help!

4 year fans and artistry

I have had countless conversations with 4 year fans and parents of gymnasts. Each one of them has complained about the lack of artistry. They are impressed with the gymnasts ability but miss the "pretty" part of gymnastics. Has the push to appeal to the X-games crowd backfired?

Help With Birthdate Discrepencies?

Hey guys, I was wondering if someone could help me out.

I have two birthdates listed for 1985 World Team Alternate Dana Dumitru of Romania - one being January 1, 1970, and the other in July, 1967. Does anyone know which date is correct?

Also, I have one birthdate for 1994 Romanian National Team Member Simona Mocanu saying she was born April, 1980, but with no specific date. The other lists her as March 25, 1979. Does anyone know which of these is right?

Lastly, IG mentions a 1987 Romanian National Team member named Aurelia Sidon for Romania, but then the 1987 Team Alternate for Romania is Mirela Sidon. Are these two different girls or the same person? And what is her/their birthdates?

Thanks in advance.

Anyone knows what happened to her? I know she retired but nothing more. It's a terrible shame, because she was hailed as the Mustafina of Romanian gymnastics. And with her many of the other Deva girls also disappeared and faded...

1992 Olympics Uneven Bars Final

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sMmxvixQ89w

I randomly stumbled upon this final while trying to see the changes from 1984 to 1988 to 1992 in bars.

There's a lot I had forgotten about this that is so weird to me.

1. WTH is with Gutsu scoring higher than Miller?! Her routine was clearly not better. Her technique was way more messy.

2. Oh my god, back in the day when Romanians killed it on bars.

3. Seriously these days the Chinese don't get enough credit for literally being the most innovative team to ever get on bars. This is just spectacularly different, unique, magnificent bars work in a time when everyone was doing basically the same routine with slight variations.

4. It really strikes me now watching back on any final pre 2005-2008 quad how much the handstand focus changed bars. I actually appreciate that a lot. At the time I don't know that I thought it was such a massive change. To me it really made bars stunningly beautiful when done well. The handstand emphasis just puts an exclamation point on technique.

5. There's so many routines here that had less than a tenth of deduction that just don't look that way to me. Judges were REALLY generous about not deducting ugly arching, bad technique, and really seemed to care only about how the landing of dismounts ended up. Everything else was kind of meh if you keep your legs together and get through your routine and its from 10 you'll get in the 9.9 range.

Are Laurie and Maggie competing for the same Olympic spot?

Look, I won't hide the fact that I'm BORED by Maggie's gymnastics. That said, do you all think they're essentially competing for the same spot?

Let's say the team is built around Simone and Gabby (99% true), would Laurie be the third AA? 2 specialist spots?

Was Kristi Phillips ever really that good

I don't mean to be harsh but I enjoy looking back at the times of gymnastics that I was mostly too young for in real time, and all the access on youtube makes it now easy to do so. I can now see there was a TON of hype on Kristi Phillips in the U.S, with some even hyping her to succeed MLR as the next U.S Olympic AA Champion. Really was she ever that great though. She competed at 1 worlds and placed 45th in all around individual scoring, not even making the top 3 Americans to qualifying into the individual All Around (on a squad that was led by girls who either didn't make the 88 Olympic team or barely did like Marlowe). She was always very weak on bars, weak on compulsories on everything but maybe beam. Her only standout event ever was beam. Her decline and missing the team in 88 was sad, but she should never have been hyped to that level. I think even a top 10 All Around finish even if she managed to peak for Seoul would have been the absolute best realistic for her. Back then there were 12 scores that counted towards the final all around totals (8 halved, the 8 team scores, 4 full). Her compulsory bars score even at her best would probably be low enough to already mathematically put her beneath the AA final scores of people like Silivas, Shushunova, Dobre at their best (probably like a 9.2, making her max already down to a 79.6, lower than those girls typically score).

have you seen these movies?

There were biographical films made about Nadia Comaneci and Gabby Douglas, but have any of you seen a film called "Gymkata" (with Kurt Thomas), and "American Anthem" (with Mitch Gaylord, which was on last weekend? I guess that because they did so well at Olympics somebody thought up the idea to make film stars out of them. Don't think it really worked, but it was good to see them both, anyway--

does anybody remember?

Many years ago, I remember seeing on television "professional" gymnastics competitions (or at least one). I think it was in the Kurt Thomas/Bart Conner era, but don't quote me. Obviously it didn't catch on. Then there was the "USA Versus the World" competitios. Then there were those international competitions (I don't know how "international" these were, but I remember Boguinskaya appearing in one of them). The prize for the winner was a guitar (?). Does anybody remember these competitions?

Question Aout 1980s Romanian Gymnasts

Question Aout 1980s Romanian Gymnasts

I was going through some of my old gymnastics stuff I've saved over the years, trying to condense things, and I noticed that I apparently have two birthdates listed for 1985 Romanian World Team Alternate Dana Dumitru. According to some sources she was born January 1, 1970 and on other lists it's a different date in 1967. Does anyone know which birthdate is correct? (And where did you find the right one?) And do you have any other info about her, like her club or other details about her career?

Also, IG Magazine mentioned the 1987 World Team Alternate was a girl named Mirela Sidon, but in another Romanian special earlier in the year (it's on the back of a poster), they mentioned National Team at the time and talked about a girl named Aurelia Sidon. Are these the same gymnasts or two different ones, and does anyone know their birthdate(s?) and anything else about them?

Thanks in advance.

Who's up for the wildcards?

This is probably way too early to be speculating this; this is probably a better question post-Test Event. But, given what we know about different gymnasts and federations, who do you think is possibly in the running for an IOC wildcard?
Who's up for the wildcards?

is gymnastics really a sport?

I remember reading on line comments about the last world championships in ice skating (can't really call it "figure" skating any more because figures are no longer part of the competition); somebody said skating isn't really a sport because it is subjective (judges' opinions) and not "objective" (first one over the finish line wins, for example). That made me think--is that person's opinion right or wrong? I see very little "art" in gymnastics any more, but then if gymnastics isn't a sport, then what is it? I remember years ago at the time of the Barcelona Olympics, a co-worker of mine (a man, of course), made a nasty remark about Oksana Skaldina and her nasty attitude toward the Spanish Rhythmic competitor who defeated her, and then he mocked the idea that "twirling a ribbon" was hardly a sport, in his opinion. I knew he was teasing me, though I am sure he meant what he said. I just answered him back in a similar vein, "YOU try it!" What are your thoughts--sport or art? Both or neither?

Podkopayeva vs Shushunova vs Liukin vs Miller

How do these 4 particular gymnasts rank against each other all time. My order would be:

1. Shushunova
2. Miller
3. Podkopayeva
4. Liukin

Although I could also possibly see: 1. Miller, 2. Shushunova, 3. Podkopayeva, 4. Liukin or also 1. Shushunova, 2. Podkopayeva, 3. Miller, 4. Liukin

I have no doubts Liukin ranks the lowest in history of those 4 for myself personally. I could see a case for Miller either being above Shushunova or below Podkopayeva, but really none for Podkopayeva being over Shushunova unless one really values artistic impact heavily.

2004 Olympic Champion Naoya Tsukahara Retires

http://ift.tt/24W20e7

Aw, this is a little sad because I grew up watching him. Naoya Tsukahara has decided to retire for good after not being selected for the Rio Test Event.

He competed at three Olympics for Japan (1996, 2000, 2004) and was part of the 2004 team that won team gold for the first time since 1976. He became an Australian citizen in 2012 and competed for Australia at the 2014 Commonwealth Games and World Championships 2013-2015.

At least he managed to get three eponymous skills on rings in the CoP during the Aussie portion of his career.

Ostapenko Interview

Kylan on TAAF translated an interview with Ostapenko. He said Kylie Dickson should/would represent BLR at the test event. He sees videos of her work often and says she has improved quite a bit since Glasgow. He also said that none of the BLR gymnasts came close to what the two Americans had to offer. I can't post links with this laptop, but surely I'm not the only one here on TAAF.

If Gabby Douglas wins in Rio...

Hear me out.

If I were a betting person, I'd have no safer bet than putting money on Simone winning the AA in Rio. It's seems like it's been her story for a long time; everything building up to this. I really think that she will come out on top this summer.

However.

Gabby has been setting herself up as the one who is chasing Simone this year. I don't think she will be able to beat Simone on Simone's average good day, but if Simone had issues, Gabby would be the one to go above her, not Iordache. Gabby has the ability to put up some really solid gymnastics that any other year would have her on top of the podium.

So let's say Simone has a brain fart and pulls a Maroney, and suddenly Douglas is two-time Olympic champion by default.

How would that affect your view of her legacy? Does that elevate her to the rank of Greatest US gymnast ever and greatest gymnast of the modern era? Does the fact that she is defending champion add legitimacy to a win that people would otherwise sort of "pass off" much like most people don't think about Izbasa winning vault in London, only that Maroney didn't. Gabby has had a VERY short senior elite career; just four years over two quads. She's proved that she's no flash in the pan, but would winning the AA twice do what she needs to erase any lingering doubt about her place in the history books as THE greatest American gymnast of all time?

Disclaimer: I am not a Douglas uber nor hater; I am ambivalent. It was just recently pointed out to me that Douglas is setting herself up to be the #2 lock in Rio, which means if Simone has a bad day, which isn't impossible, she has a very decent chance at being #1 yet again.
If Gabby Douglas wins in Rio...

Running Tally of USA D-scores heading into Rio

Would people be interested in a thread where we keep track of D-scores for the US gymnasts for this year since we know the olympic selection will be very difficult? Would love a master thread that compares the top gymnasts of the other countries, but we have nowhere near the resources that we have for the USA gymnasts here in the USA.

I'd like to update this as the gymnasts compete more during the year. I want to make it realistic, so I don't want it to merely be planned D-scores, but more so skills and connections that have been competed and credited. Once they add in difficulty in competition, I'll update their D-scores. For a new routine, we can do the routine breakdowns. Let me know if I make mistakes, or if my terminology is off (particularly on dance skills).

So far for this year, we've seen Gabby Douglas, Maggie Nichols, and Madison Kocian. After Jesolo and Pac Rims we should have D-scores for most of the top contenders.

Current Standings:

1. Douglas = 5.8 + 6.4 + 6.5 + 6.0 = 24.7
2. Nichols = 5.8 + 6.0 + 6.3 + 6.3 = 24.4
3. Kocian = 0 + 6.6 + 6.3 + 0 = 12.9

New Routines

Vault

We saw DTYs from both Gabby and Maggie at the American Cup. Maggie will most likely get back her amanar, but we've yet to see if Gabby will be able to bring hers back.
Douglas: 5.8
Nichols: 5.8

Bars

Gabby added the Chow 1/2 at the American Cup, planned to connect but didn't, so I won't give her the CV until we see her compete it in combination:

Clear pike 1/1 (E) + Piked Tkatchev (E) + Pak (D) CV = 0.3
Clear pike 1/2 (D) + Endo 1/2 in el grip (D) + Stalder circle (C) + Chow 1/2 (E) CV = 0.1
Clear pike (D)
DLO (D)

Skills: EEEDDDDD = 3.5
CV: 0.4
EGR: 2.5
D-score: 6.4 (6.5 with Chow 1/2 connection)

Maggie showed her same routine from last year at the American Cup, missed the van leeuwen connection but we've seen her do it many times:

Toe-on 1/1 (D) + Maloney (D) + Pak (D) + Van Leeuwen (E) CV = 0.4
Toe-on (C) + Toe-on 1/2 (C) + Jaeger (D)
DLO (D)

Skills: EDDDDDCC = 3.1
CV: 0.4
EGR: 2.5
D-score: 6.0

Madison competed her same bar routine from last year's Worlds at the WOGA Classic:

Clear pike 1/1 (E)
Komova I (E) + Pak (D) + Chow 1/2 (E) CV = 0.4
Clear pike 1/2 (D) + Jaeger (D) CV = 0.1
Stalder circle (C) + Stalder 1/1 (D) + Full-in (D) CV = 0.1

Skills: EEEDDDDD = 3.5
CV: 0.6
EGR: 2.5
D-score: 6.6

Beam

Gabby competed a routine at the American Cup similar to last year's (switch ring most likely wasn't credited but we know shes gotten credit before):

Piked front (E) + Split jump (A) CV = 0.1
Flic-flac (B) + Layout Step out (C)
Standing full (F)
Switch leap (C) + Switch 1/2 (D) CV = 0.1
Punch front (D)
Single L-turn (C)
Switch Ring (E)
Front aerial (D) + Split jump (A) + Pike jump (A) CV = 0.1
Flic-flac (B) + Back handspring (B) + Double Pike (E) CV = 0.1

Acro: FEEDD = 2.4
Dance: EDC = 1.2
CV: 0.4
EGR: 2.5
D-score: 6.5

Maggie showed some upgrades on beam at the American Cup:

Wolf 2 1/2 (E)
Wolf double (D)
Front aerial (D) + Split jump (A) + Sissone (A) CV = 0.1
Side Somi (D)
Wolf jump (A) + Punch front (D) CV = 0.1
Aerial cartwheel (D)
Switch ring (E)
Flic-flac (B) + Layout Step out (C)
Switch leap (C) + Back tuck (C) CV = 0.1
Double Pike (E)

Acro: EDDDD = 2.1
Dance: EED = 1.4
CV: 0.3
EGR: 2.5
D-score: 6.3

Madison also showed upgrades at the WOGA classic (I've rarely seen her actually connect her aerial to a sheep jump if ever, so I won't credit her for it yet):

Arabian (F)
Switch ring (E)
Flic-flac (B) + Layout Step out (C) + Layout Step out (C) CV = 0.2
Front aerial (D)
Sheep jump (D)
Aerial Cartwheel (D) + Split jump (A) + Sissone (A) CV = 0.1
Full turn (A)
Switch leap (C) + Back tuck (C) CV = 0.1
Double pike (E)

Acro: FEDDC = 2.2
Dance: EDC = 1.2
CV: 0.4
EGR: 2.5
D-score: 6.3

Floor

Gabby competed basically her same routine at the American Cup from last year (not sure she's ever been credited with the Ferrari so not giving it to her yet):

Double L-turn (D) + Single L-turn (B) CV = 0.1
Double Arabian (E) + Stag Jump (A) CV = 0.1
Full-in (E)
Switch ring (C) + Gogean (D)
Memmel (D)
Double pike (D)
Split leap 1/1 (C) (attempting Ferrari (D))
Double tuck (D)

Acro: EEDD = 1.8
Dance: DDDC = 1.5
CV: 0.2
EGR: 2.5

Maggie performed her new floor routine at the American Cup:

Double double (H)
Full-in (E)
Switch ring (C) + Switch leap 1/1 (D)
Full-in pike (E)
Gogean (D)
Triple wolf turn (E)
Double tuck (D)

Acro: HEED = 2.2
Dance: EDDC = 1.6
CV: 0.0
EGR: 2.5
D-score: 6.3

Could Rio 2016 be at risk? What would happen if Brazil is not apt to host the Games?

I know this might be a long shot, but I've been worried about the Rio Olympics lately. I know everything seem to come together at the right time but Brazil is really in the biggest political/economic/corruption-related unrest it has been in the past 30 years. I've never seen anything like it and expert says they have never seen anything like it in the past 50 years. The situation is just getting very scary considering it seems possible that it could get worst in the coming months. I think on the 13th we will have clues to what will happen as there will be a big protest rally this Sunday. The population is expected to be on the streets protesting and this time, tensions are at an all time high.

It's sad but I don't think Rio could come in a worst time. People REALLY don't care about sports right now and there is a 50/50 chance that the President will be impeached before the Olympics. This Sunday will be the first of many protests to come requesting the change in Power. Things could escalate and become violent.

I'm very sad and concerned about this. Like I said, everything may end up perfectly fine but would another city (London maybe) be able to host the event given there is military intervention/impeachment/violent unrest in Brazil?

Russian Gymnastics Appreciation - 2016: The Olympic Year

Since it's 2016, the old thread is over 100 pages long, and with the forum being down, it's the perfect time to start a new thread!

2016 has arrived! The Olympics are right around the corner! The Russians fear the Zika virus (are they pregnant?!)! Nabs for President!

I'm adding milktea's quote, because it summed up the recent events nicely:

Things that have happened:

-Russia not going to Rio Test Event due to concerns of the Zika virus, and Nabs called bullsh-t on that excuse (it was great)

-Ilyankova, Perebinosova, Saifulina, and Zubova currently at Gymnix (Ilyankova looks good)

-Aliya might compete at the DTB-Pokal Team Challenge in Stuttgart, but that's not for certain

-Aliya undecided about AA or just a few events at Russian Championships

-Shelgunova has been getting big scores lately at competitions in Riga and Minsk

It's time to start a new appreciation thread. Here are the last few post from the last one.

She just burnt out and that happens. She probably also looked at the team as a whole and realized that she had an uphill battle. There's a lot more options for specialists and AAs now than a year ago.

I think by February before an Olympic year looking at the field, the five spots, and her current fitness she and her coaches probably knew on some level it would be a long shot bid.

I was honestly afraid she would burn out before she got to UCLA and not make it four years if she did the whole elite season. this year.

So gymnasts like Aly (heavily D skewed) or Nastia, Shawn and Gabby (who made it too big individually to be just part of a team) don't really fit in the puzzle. Then there are the girls who would be good fits but rush going pro (Bross, Wieber). Kyla I think is an example of a perfect NCAA gymnast (let's see if that will be the case). She always made it very clear that she wanted to go collegiate, is highly E skewed, a team player and super reliable. She really has it all to be the most successful NCAA gymnast ever. Price and Sloan are two great very recent examples of Elite to NCAA success.

Gymboard Therapy Thread

Sorry if this is inappropriate to post here, but I feel the need to share how much I missed this board, and didn't want to ruin any REAL threads. At first, I thought it would just be a few days thing, but as time went on I began to panic! I follow blogs and things, but missed the discussion HERE. Phew - with so much happening and so many meets I'm so glad this is back. And I'm not embarrassed at all to say I was seriously sad that this was down. That is all.

Looking forward to what Kyla will accomplish at UCLA.

Maroney Interview

Maroney gives a great interview. However, i wouldn't be too pleased if i were her coaches. Kinda threw them under the bus in my opinion. But it was interesting to hear what goes on behind the scenes. I already kind of assumed that the culture was cut throat, but she sure confirmed it. Juicy.
