Elise Ray Question

Guys, I remember years ago there was a discussion that mentioned how Elise Ray had faced some teasing in school for being in gymnastics. I wanted to find the info again to help someone out but I can't find the post. Does anyone remember the details and could you possibly refresh me on what happened?

What would you want in a Gymnternet app/site?

Hey all,

Just asking what the title says, basically! My group in coding bootcamp is trying to decide on a project, and I was thinking how we kind of need a site for the gymnternet, as this one isn't modded anymore so nobody new can join. What features would you like to see if someone were creating a site for this community? (Yes, it's for a class, but actually enacting it wouldn't necessarily be a problem.)

Would You Buy a Cameo Shoutout From an Elite Gymnast?

Interestingly, there are 5 gymnasts that are part of the lineup.

Nadia Comaneci: https://www.cameo.com/comaneci10
Peng Peng Lee: https://www.cameo.com/pengpenglee
Paul Ruggeri: https://www.cameo.com/paul_ruggeri
Bridget Sloan: https://www.cameo.com/bridgetsloan
Carly Patterson: https://www.cameo.com/carlypatterson

Except for Patterson, they all seem to charge reasonable rates. If you could get a personalized shoutout from any gymnast of your choosing, (regardless if they're on Cameo) who would it be and what would you want them to say? If Shushunova was still around I would've happily paid through the nose (or even a vital organ) for a shoutout from her.

Beam Countdown (110-101)

Hi, folks. My name is Bobby. I post infrequently. Years ago, I was a member of a community called Gymworld. It was hosted by a dude in Belgium or Germany, I believe, and he got into some kind of criminal trouble and the forum was shut down. Thus, I came here right before the 2012 Olympic Games.

One thing I did every year on the Gymworld board was a countdown of all my favorite beam routines. People seemed to like it, and I don't want to be presumptuous and assume everyone will love it here, but I'm going forward anyway.

I have renal failure and narcolepsy and an autoimmune condition, so I got disability three ways and I have little to do other than go to dialysis and read and watch TV/movies. Therefore, I decided to bring this back up. I hope you enjoy it. And please don't get mad if your favorite isn't ranked highly or is ranked more lowly than someone you don't like.

Yes, some of the routines contain falls and other errors, but most of those will be in the 80-110 range.

I did all four events for WAG on Gymworld, and I always start with beam because it's my favorite event to watch. After this, I will do UB, then Vault and then Floor (my least favorite these days for the women).

Countdown starts in next post …

Gymnastics Australia

So Mihai is done as of November: http://www.gymnastics.org.au/Ga/Post...AUSTRALIA.aspx

I'm wondering if someone like a Mary Anne Monckton or an Allana Slater would be considered for a job like this? Why not get an Australian whom has been through the system in recent years to try and right the ship? that said, I was surprised they did as well as they did at Worlds, starting on beam, first subdivision, injuries, etc.. Yet only finished one spot way from qualifying a team..

https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcas...vC7GVPVZJyNjL0

Have y'all heard this?

There are moments that left me speechless.
But I LOVE what she said at 22 mins about coaches needing an education in psychology and about the need for the coach to adopt a scientific approach towards their athletes. AMEN. That is a concept that could and really should be evolved by the FIG.

Team GB

After these worlds, the men’s team has two spots pretty much taken. Barring injury, Joe Fraser since he’s a good AA gymnast and now a World Champion and Max are basically on the team. The hunger games fight for the other two spots will be interesting. Obviously the remaining members of this years world team have an advantage over others but it will be a dog fight that’s for sure. I can’t believe FIG thought it would be a ‘good’ idea to make 4 member teams.

2019 Worlds - Men's Qualifications

Anyone watching Russian men?

Nikita just rocked a gorgeous floor routine, but still with room to improve. 14.9. He looks cleaner overall on floor than last year.
Dalaloyan doesn't look quite as sharp to me as last year, but had a good set for a 14.733
Abliazin didn't even compete. Just touched and saluted. I take it David is alternate or too injured for floor?

2019 Worlds Prediction Contest - I forgot again: TEN YEAR ANNIVERSARY!

I forgot again! I'm sure I would have remembered once prelims started and I wasn't messing around with spreadsheets, haha. But happy to get this up in time; thanks London2012!

It's been TEN YEARS of Prediction Contest fun! Thank you to everyone who has had fun playing this little game!

We're using Google Forms again to submit predictions so visit the links below!

Click HERE to submit your predictions!

Reminders for this year:
- I will NOT be accepting ANY forum submissions for predictions as long as the form is working well. If you post your predictions in this thread but do not submit them via the webform, your responses will NOT be entered and recorded.
- PLEASE save a hard copy of your predictions elsewhere in case the spreadsheet goes paflooey. I suggest copying them into this thread, but remember that I will NOT be using them as your official predictions unless something goes wrong (and I will notify everyone if that is the case).
- You CAN edit your predictions after you make them; just make sure to save the "Edit Response" link when you first submit so you can access it later. Your unique link will work up until I close down the ability to edit.

Rules for the actual point tallying are the same as before, which I will quote below:

Quote:

The rules are really simple. You post your predictions for the medal podium of each event, plus one alternate per podium.

Points
5 points --- each correct medal prediction
2.5 points --- each correct top 3 prediction, but incorrect medal prediction
.5 point --- if your alternate wins a medal.

For example, in '10 this was my AA prediction:

AA:
1 Musty
2 Bross
3 Aly
Alt: Jiang Yuyuan

The actual result was 1st: Musty, 2nd: Jiang, 3rd Bross. I received 5 points for correctly predicting Musty's medal position, 2.5 points for putting Bross on the podium but in the wrong position, and .5 points for having my alternate Jiang medal, for a total of 8 points. I didn't receive any points for Aly, since she didn't make the podium.

In the case of a tie for a medal, you still only receive points for each correct PLACEMENT. If Kyla and Simone tie in AA and you had them 1-2, you would receive 7.5 points for correctly predicting the gold medalist but incorrectly predicting the silver medalist (which would correctly be no one). If you like to tempt fate, feel free to put ties as your prediction BUT you may not have more than 3 people per podium plus one alternate (i.e. no eight way tie for gold! :p ;) )

Predictions are locked the day after prelims are completed, (before MAG TF starts) with NO EDITING ALLOWED. This gives everyone the best idea of who will be competing for the medals, but does not account for last minute substitutions due to federation swapping or injury. You are not required to predict your podium out of the official start list but may substitute anyone as you see fit; heck, put anyone on there! Do as you please. :)

The contest will run for WAG and MAG, and then one combined for those who submit in both categories. You are free to predict all the events or just a few; whatever you like. :) No deducting points for wrong answers, so why not? ;)
Predictions will CLOSE at (time TBD but right before MAG TF starts. You are welcome to make any changes to your predictions up until that point, but not after. Absolutely no editing or substitutions after the closing time will be allowed, so make sure you double and triple check! :)

Looking forward to another fun year!

The Biles on beam is...an H??

They gave Simone's double-double off beam an H. Which is insane.

Or, as she put it: bull****.

What is the logic here? Is it just that they had such a hard time breaking the G barrier on beam? If the double tuck is a D, and the tucked full-in is a G, then...

Team Selection Idea

So I was thinking about recent discussion about selection processes and wondered if a World-Cup points-style selection would work. Just for fun, I applied a points system to this year's athletes to see what World Team it would give us.

How it Works: Athletes receive points for placing in the TOP 4 of designated events. 1st place = 4 points, 2nd place = 3 points, 3rd place = 2 points, 4th place = 1 point.

1. Athletes ONLY receive points if they place in the top 4 of an event. The reasoning for this is that the best team is made up of athletes who contribute high scores to a 3-up situation, and/or are a good backup for Team Finals. In other words, you can't just be a nice, consistent 6th on everything and build up points. You need to be capable of a team finals-worthy routine to get points on it at all.

2. Athletes can earn points by placement on events at Nationals and Selection Camp. Their total points are added up and the top 5 athletes give you your team.

So this year, the standings (and points) would be:

1. Biles (25)
2. Lee (16)
3. Eaker (11)
4. Carey (10)
5. Wong (6)
6. Hurd/McCallum/Chiles (3)
7. Skinner (2)
8. Torrez/Thomas (1)

So the team would be Biles, Lee, Eaker, Carey, and Wong. Alternate would be a judgment call, but my vote would be McCallum because she earned points on 3 events, so would be a good all-around backup.

I realize this hurts someone like Skinner, who only recently came back so is naturally improving with each meet. Or could hurt someone who was injured at Nationals but ready for selection. But overall I like the concept of it.

It's clear, objective, based on performance, and based on ranking. But unlike All-Around rankings, the standings are based on what you contribute to Team Finals events. By limiting points to the top 4 placements, there is a natural cap on how many gymnasts can get points for an event, preventing the Final Point totals from having too many good gymnasts on one event and not enough on another (if that makes sense).

Question about dance elements vs tumbling and injuries

I was thinking back on Sanne's beam routine and that the Netherlands team tends to incorporate far more dance elements into its routines than other gymnasts. So given the high injury rates across the sport, I'm curious why there isn't more of a reliance on dance elements? Wouldn't they take some of the load off of the body and lower the overall likelihood/rates of injury or lower the impact on an already injured area? Is it that coaches are largely in a tumbling mindset and not used to building routines around dance elements like the Netherlands or something else?

U.S. Women's AA poll

Morgan, Riley, Kara, Grace, Sunisa...regardless of who makes up the World team, only 2, at most, can do AA. So who should they be? Sunisa put herself in a great spot, but Nationals is only 1 competition. If she places 4th AA at camp, will she lose her grip on an AA spot? A lot of people might cut Riley out for inconsistency, but what if she places 2nd at camp? Or does none of that matter that much?

So vote for your two. This is who you WANT to see get the chance to do AA in qualifications.

Body Positive Guidelines

Has anyone seen the new Body Positive Guidelines set out by Australian Gymnastics?

You can read them if you go to this link, then scroll down the page to open up the document.

http://www.gymnastics.org.au/GA/Athl...6-1b2f7e858979

I was pleasantly surprised to find they were really well thought out. They talk about trying to avoid body-shape comments in general, whether positive or negative, and instead focus on praising an athlete's strength or technique.

They set minimum ages and maximum frequency for body assessments being done, require athlete and parent permission for body assessments to be done, and require athlete and parent permission for that info to be shared with coaches.

They discourage coaches from discussing nutrition plans with athletes, instead recommending that coaches bring in qualified nutritionists.

They recognize that any nutritional or body concerns should be done privately, not in front of others, and they discourage making comparisons between other athletes.

I realize you can type out all the nice, healthy sentences in the world, but you can't ensure coaches actually follow them. However, if you make guidelines like this a requirement for your members, it does give athletes, parents, and the gym organization some teeth in the event a coach fails to follow them.

I don't know if the USA has put out anything like this in any of their new policies, but these would be good ones if they haven't.

Olympic Channel Documentary

The first episode of the Olympic Channel's documentary on Hurd, Melnikova and Chen Yile is up:

https://www.olympicchannel.com/en/or...mpression=true

Chen Yile has not seen her family is 2 years. That is a narrative that we hear a lot in fluff pieces - that Chinese gymnasts sacrifice their family and childhood. Not being too familiar with the details of some centralized systems, does anyone know if that rate of seeing family members (for lack of a better way of putting it) is similar for the Russian and Romanian athletes? Is it forbidden for families to see their kids/gymnasts in China during training (before you jump on me for that word, it was "forbidden" for US parents to see their kids at competitions...), or is it a matter of distance and transport? Surely the gymnasts get some holidays off (New Years?) and so could be visited by their families?

It seems like Russian athletes also don't see their families a lot? Melnikova seems like such a sympathetic character, very easy to like. The competition footage of her is really nice.

Cool to see Chow laughing while coaching the gymnasts.

Marie Claire Article Re: Miss Val...What is Going On?

(EDIT: sorry about the thread title—my computer kept auto correcting my attempted titles to MARIE CLAIRE article :) instead of MARIA CAIRE article—the article is from the LA TIMES..I thought I fixed it but it reverted back before I posted the thread and i don’t know how to edit a thread title)

http://https://www.latimes.com/calif...sions-20190721

Forgive me if this has already been discussed on the board here somewhere, I couldn’t find anything on it. I only heard about this after listening to the Gymcastic podcast, during which Jessica declined to comment due to conflicts of interest and while Spencer did go into some detail about the controversy, he didn’t seem to have any answers or insight regarding the controversy—only questions.

I assumed initially, it was likely just a case where something Miss Val had done something for good and altruistic reasons (however unusual in a characteristically Miss Val way)—that had been misconstrued and swept into the wave of stories that has been coming out for the past few months about college applicants being unfairly admitted as student athletes, whether in exchange for some financial “gift” or other quid-pro-quo, including social/familial connection to an individual in a position to fast-track someone’s acceptance on the basis of their potential as an athletes who could contribute as a member of their team’s roster.

However, after reading the article I was really struck by some of the details that, if they are indeed true, would seem to suggest that, at best, the situation in question was one where Miss Val was aware of an applicant, because of her relationship with the applicant’s uncle, who possessed character traits/strengths with which this prospective student could contribute/or even make herself an asset as a participant within the athletic program in some form/fashion. And even though, it seems pretty evident, Miss Val would have had to have known that contribution wasn’t ever going as an athlete on the gymnastics team, she named Maria Caire as a recruit for the 2016 roster to ensure her place at UCLA, with the intention of moving her to a managerial role as early as possible (where maybe Miss Val did believe this student, for whatever reasons, could make the kind of difference that would justify the way she’d secured her admission.

At worst, I guess, Miss Val used her position to do a favor for a friend—which I know doesn’t begin to compare to similar college admissions revelations of late.

I think I just didn’t think of Miss Val as someone who would ever participate in that type of thing—in any sort of way.

I’m maybe though, as Spencer noted in the podcast, more bothered by all of attempts to suggest that this (now) manager (who, due to a health restriction revealed in pre-season medical tests, never spent a day actually practicing gymnastics with the UCLA team, which has meant that, in the absence of any official or even informal (ie. recollection of other gymnasts of this person ever having set foot in the gym where UCLA claims she’d done her training) record or her having any experience with the sport, is also without the benefit of of her fellow UCLA gymnasts from the 2016 being able to testify to having witnessed her doing gymnastics), I’m think I’m more bothered by the quotes in the article where Miss Val and the UCLA spokesperson attempt to claim this was a legitimate recruit who they believed “could help the team on vault’?? ...even comparing her to Ariana Berlin????

As Spencer mentioned, Miss Val has taken athletes on the team before who she (and they) knew would never compete, but wanted to be a part of the program, of the team, and have been valuable as they have contributed in other ways—why wouldn’t she just frame her answers to the many questions this story has raised in that sort of way? Instead of this whole pile of whatever that seems completely unbelievable...?

The whole thing is just seems really strange and inconsistent with the characterization of this legendary coach that so many gymnasts testify to.

Unless maybe there is a whole other side to what is set out in this article that I’m unaware of?
Thats why I wanted to ask about it here.

Does anyone have any more information regarding this story? Is there something that the Maria Caire article in the LA Times didn’t get right?

Favorite Routines You've Seen in Person

So, I've been to quite a few elite gym meets since '96 and its lovely whenever you can remember the awe you felt when seeing a routine live, in person. One of my favorites that comes to mind was Shawn Johnson's 2006 beam routine. The main thing was her layout. I see now that form and technique/execution were not terribly stellar, but I still love that layout, lol.

I also remember Lilia Podkopayeva's compulsory floor in 1996. Loved everything about it because I love everything about her gymnastics (mostly):

Trying to keep this place a bit livelier than its been. It helps me keep my sanity while I'm at work, lol. Please post your favorite routines you've seen in person.

gym catch up

Hey guys, who is still around from the glory days of this forum? Kitty here? lol I really haven't kept up with gym nearly as intense as I used to in the last five or six years but I check back every now and then to see if there's any inspiring activity going on and it really seems like WAG has stalled in the last few years.

Anyway what's new in the gym world? Who is dominating? Who is up and coming? What's up with Rus, Rom, China as of late. Been seeing some Romanian headlines here and there and it sounds like Melnikova is basically the only name Russia has floating around? Komova finally retire?

Who is inspiring to everyone right now? What gymnasts are keeping your interests? What new skills are there etc?

Competitive championship for both men and women this year in the AA. Lieke Wevers finishing second with a 53.80 is impressive.
I can totally see a team of Eythora, Naomi, Lieke and Sanne with an AA as alternate.

US BB Coach Questions

How often does the club beam coach attend meets with US athletes? I remember Shannon talking about Steve and Peggy always being with her but Shawn and Aly seem to imply it's just the male coach. Are they always at Nationals?

Also, who was Shannon's female coach in 2000? There's a blonde woman with Steve at Olympic Trials since Peggy was in Australia, but the commentators acted like she never existed.

USA Senior-Junior Team Dynamic

Something I was thinking about, how much do the US Seniors know about the junior team? Especially those who won't be eligible for the next quad? For example, how familiar would Gabby and Aly have been prior to their comebacks with gymnasts like Simone, Laurie, Madison, etc.? Or the 2008 girls with the Fab Five? Are they like one team together or is it really 2 programs within one?

Also there was an article years ago mentioning how Spain's female gymnasts aren't allowed to associate with the Male gymnasts because of their ages. Obviously USAG doesn't have this kind of rule since Aly talks about crushing on Jake Dalton, but do the women know the guys much outside of when they make a competition team together? Or is it more like pre 1996 where you basically meet at the airport?

COP Question: Aerials & Onodis

I'm trying to remember, did the FIG change it so that doing a front aerial to one foot and to two feet are the same element and therefore can't be done in the same routine? Or am I thinking of something else? Also what about the Onodi and Worley (2 foot Onodi)?

Lastly, did anyone ever get around to attempting a gainer Onodi? I know Shayla was training one but I don't recall if anyone has ever competed it.

What is this PH move called?

There's a thing on pommels where the guys swing forward with their legs on either side of the horse, then do a 1/2 turn with their hips and do the same thing facing the other direction. Is that a scissor? Ioana Crisan did something like it on beam from 2014-2016 and it looked SOOOO cool!

Back to 5 person teams for 2024

Sorry if this isn't new news but it was for me. Looks like we're going back to 5 person teams for the 2024 games (still pending IOC approval though).

I'm assuming that means we wont' worry about the mess of individuals qualifying any more.

Fanny Cottencin?

On the 1998 American Cup vignette about Elvire Teza, there's a brunette gymnast who someone told me was Fanny Cottencin. I have never heard of her before and can't find anything about her, other than that she competed in the 1996 Junior Europeans for France.

Do any of you guys know more about her? I'm especially curious about her age -- she looked too old to be a junior in 1996.

Gymcastic Transcripts

Does anyone know of where to find an archive of all the Gymcastic podcast transcripts? I found some of them, but it's only the first 50 or so. I'm especially looking for the one of Elvire Teza and Cecile Canqueteau.

If not, can podcasts be downloaded to save or can you only listen to them online?

New Terminology Change?

I seem to recall on the old gym routines site, the low to high transition everyone does was called a toe on straddle catch. (Or free hop or Stalder straddle catch). Nowadays everyone calls them shoots, like toe shoot and Stalder shoot. Was this an official change or did the other site get it wrong? And if it was official, when and why did it happen?

Also, I remember when Terin Humphrey debuted her BB turn, they described it as a turn in side lunge. Nowadays it's called a wolf turn. Again, when and why did it change? (I personally think the first is more accurate as you start and finish sideways and many of them spend the turn sideways as well with only a handful hitting a wolf position at any point!)

Riley's fall on vault.

It seems the US girls have been taking a lot of falls lately. Riley although beautiful to watch, fell on vault at the World Cup. Do you think the girls have more falls since Marta left? What do you think is the cause? All you gymnastics stats buffs, what's the score?

Belgian Appreciation Thread and News

Most countries seem to have one and I couldn’t find one for Belgium. In important WAG news, Rune Hermans announced her retirement on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/p/BvCjs6zH...d=2lciq4a2ef3r

I’m wondering whom will replace her? Any up and coming Belgian juniors that we should know about? She was a 2016 Olympian and competed at multiple international meets and the World Championships as well.

New WAG Technical Help Desk Published

http://www.gymnastics.sport/publicdi...ition%207).pdf

The parts highlighted in green are those that are new. Here's a summary of the most important stuff:

"Switch leap with 1/2 or 1/1 turn must show a cross split position."

Scales on beam cannot receive CV if it includes grasping under the beam like in here: https://youtu.be/vsSt9QGX4Po

They're trying to kill the wolf turns: Lack of balance - If the gymnast loses her balance after turn in squat position or continues to sitting or lying down positions – apply deduction 0.10/0.30 (lack of balance).

1992 Olympic Competition Question

I thought the Olympic competition alternated - one Games the men competed Saturday-Monday-Wednesday and the women Sunday-Tuesday-Thursday and then the next Games they switch. But in the Krista Quiner book about Shannon, they mentioned in 1992 the women competed Sunday-Tiesday etc, and I distinctly remember it was the same in 1996. I'm so confused - does anyone here remember and could clear this up?

Pki

Anyone know of the teams or individuals who will be competing at Parkettes this year? I haven't gone in years but I have a friend visiting from overseas who would like to ride along if I go. I went several times in tbe earlly 2000s and they used to draw big names. I know I saw Vise, Kupetts, Sacramone and more there in the past. Do they still draw some of the top girls? Just want to make sure it would be worth the trip since it's a few hours each way.
