Help Recording Games?

My DVR is acting weird and I'm not sure if it's going to work properly during the Games (and there's no time to get it fixed). Plus we're having lots of storms here and there's a distinct possibility of a power outage messing things up.

Would someone be willing to record the Olympics WAG competition and make DVD copies just in case something goes wrong with my copy? I'll pay the cost of shipping. I have an eye condition that limits how much I can spend on the computer, so depending on the streaming coverage isn't an option for me.

Thanks in advance.

2016 Olympic Prediction Contest - 7th Heaven!

IT'S HERE IT'S HERE! OLYMPICS YEAH YEAH YEAH!

Coming Soon: Events Result Spreadsheet

We're back again! Just like last year, I'll be using Google Forms to gather data!

Click HERE to submit your predictions!
Click HERE to view the Response webpage
Click HERE to view the Response spreadsheet

New info for this year:
- I will NOT be accepting ANY forum submissions for predictions as long as the form is working well. If you post your predictions in this thread but do not submit them via the webform, your responses will NOT be entered and recorded.
- PLEASE save a hard copy of your predictions elsewhere in case the spreadsheet goes paflooey. I suggest copying them into this thread, but remember that I will NOT be using them as your official predictions unless something goes wrong (and I will notify everyone if that is the case).
- You CAN edit your predictions after you make them; just make sure to save the "Edit Response" link when you first submit so you can access it later. Your unique link will work up until I close down the ability to edit.

Rules for the actual point tallying are the same as before, which I will quote below:

Quote:

The rules are really simple. You post your predictions for the medal podium of each event, plus one alternate per podium.

Points
5 points --- each correct medal prediction
2.5 points --- each correct top 3 prediction, but incorrect medal prediction
.5 point --- if your alternate wins a medal.

For example, in '10 this was my AA prediction:

AA:
1 Musty
2 Bross
3 Aly
Alt: Jiang Yuyuan

The actual result was 1st: Musty, 2nd: Jiang, 3rd Bross. I received 5 points for correctly predicting Musty's medal position, 2.5 points for putting Bross on the podium but in the wrong position, and .5 points for having my alternate Jiang medal, for a total of 8 points. I didn't receive any points for Aly, since she didn't make the podium.

In the case of a tie for a medal, you still only receive points for each correct PLACEMENT. If Kyla and Simone tie in AA and you had them 1-2, you would receive 7.5 points for correctly predicting the gold medalist but incorrectly predicting the silver medalist (which would correctly be no one). If you like to tempt fate, feel free to put ties as your prediction BUT you may not have more than 3 people per podium plus one alternate (i.e. no eight way tie for gold! :p ;) )

Predictions are locked the day after prelims are completed, (before MAG TF starts) with NO EDITING ALLOWED. This gives everyone the best idea of who will be competing for the medals, but does not account for last minute substitutions due to federation swapping or injury. You are not required to predict your podium out of the official start list but may substitute anyone as you see fit; heck, put anyone on there! Do as you please. :)

The contest will run for WAG and MAG, and then one combined for those who submit in both categories. You are free to predict all the events or just a few; whatever you like. :) No deducting points for wrong answers, so why not? ;)
Predictions will CLOSE at 12:00pm CST August 8th. You are welcome to make any changes to your predictions up until that point, but not after. Absolutely no editing or substitutions after the closing time will be allowed, so make sure you double and triple check! :)

Looking forward to another fun year!

Would You Rather... ?

Kalinina's thread reminded me of the "Would You Rather...?" game where you present two difficult scenarios and the next poster has to choose one as well as provide another set of scenarios for the following poster. I thought it might be fun to play and I didn't want to hijack the other thread. There are no limitations on the timeline of events (past/present/future) - be as creative as you wish!

Would you rather Russian WAG get banned from competing or Simone doesn't take home a single gold?

You Can Only Have One

In the service of pre-Rio posting boredom, this is a little game called “What Do You Want More?” Pretend that 1 of each result can happen, but only 1. If one happens, the other one won’t. Which do you want more? If you don’t like either result, you’ll have to choose the result you dislike the least (you know, like a presidential election). And feel free to add an additional hard choice if you think of an interesting one.

1. The USA wins team gold OR Simone Biles wins AA gold.

2. The GBR men win a team medal OR the GBR women win a team medal.

3. Oleg Vernaiev wins an AA medal OR Manrique Larduet wins an AA medal.

4. Ponor wins an event medal OR Chusovitina wins an event medal.

5. Simone excepted, the U.S. AAer you like most gets to do AA in prelims, messes up, and doesn’t qualify OR the U.S. AAer you like most doesn’t get a
chance to do AA and you forever wonder if she would have qualified.

6. Biles wins vault gold OR Biles wins floor gold.

7. All competitions and results run smoothly and generally as expected OR something crazy unexpected happens in some way that makes these Games
remembered for it for years, with people referencing “What happened in Rio” for decades after.

8. Ellie Black wins a medal OR Ellie Downie wins a medal.

9. Your favorite gymnast gets underscored and cheated out of a deserved medal OR your favorite gymnast gets overscored and wins an undeserved medal.

10. Every single medal placement turns out exactly as you hoped for, but a gymnast from Belgium gets injured OR all the scoring sucks and none of the
medal podiums make you happy but everyone goes home healthy. (hee hee)

11. Nabieva OR Nabieva. 

I don't know rhythmic gymnastics

This section of the forum is basically dead, but I'm desperate.

I've had a very recent pique in curiosity about Russian RG. I never actually watched it before due to lack of interest, but I'm familiar with names like Kabaeva, Tchachina, Bessonova, Kanaeva, and most recently Mamun. Oh and of course the overlord, Irina Viner ;)

I've googled as much info as I can on the sport, but either my search skills are inept or there's just not much RG info and communities on the US's side of the web. Does anyone know of any active, English-speaking RG blogs, forums/communities? I'm interested in learning about the sport, it's history, skills, scoring, competition formats, and if rope is still an apparatus (I remember it was around, then there was a thing about FIG scrapping it?). I've been on youtube to watch full competitions, I've found a few, but many RG uploads are in 3-5 minute pieces and I don't know the order of events. Do groups/team come first like AG? Also groups perform different apparatuses, which adds to my confusion. What about the apparatus order? Then there's the AA and individual events, that I assume follow group/team?

The Olympics is in just a couple of weeks, so hopefully someone will visit the RG section soon and reply lol.

Mens All Around silver and bronze medalists in Rio

While I ironically (considering he is probably the best gymnast in history and has dominated the AA so long) dont think he is a Biles level lock this time around lets face it, Uchimura as the AA Champ in Rio is still atleast the 97% likely outcome. So if he wins as expected who will the AA silver and bronze medalists be. I think this battle might be even more exciting than the womens as there are so many worthy contenders, even some who could beat Uchimura if they did their best (but probably wont given their history), and people worthy of those spots, whereas the womens it is almost a best of a not so great lot of up and comers, people with weak events, or past their prime ex greats after Simone.

Deng Shudi is a major contender. He in fact is one of those who would most likely defeat Uchimura with a perfect competition as the team finals of the 2014 Worlds proves, but probably wont hit 6 for 6 as he never does, but if he comes relatively close might medal. He is China's first true top AAer in a long time.

Larudet is an exciting prospect and was a major suprise AA medalist at worlds. Can he repeat in Rio, with more people looking at him.

Max Whitlock will have huge expectations from back home in Britian to bring home an AA medal. He is one of my personal favorites.

The most talented gymnast in the world today might be Oleg Vernyayev. He even more than Deng could really challenge and even defeat Kohei with a perfect competition. Which probably wont happen, but if he can limit his mistakes to one fall or less he has a great shot of an AA medal, which I would love to see for him. One of my bigtime favorites.

Sam Mikaluk isnt really capable of challenge Kohei at all even with a perfect competition, but if he hit 6 for 6 (another that is rare for) and some of the more talented gymnasts made mistakes he could sneak in for an AA medal. He was a miss on high bar away from an AA silver back in 2013. Examining his D scores, and realistic potential scores, he is competitive enough he could sneak in with a rare all hit competition and mistakes by others.

I will leave an option for a 2nd Japanese as I am not even sure which they will use for the AA, but depending which they do there are a couple other possible AA medalists.

I fixed the wikipedia page of Kim Dae-Eun

His wikipedia before was incomplete and inaccurate so I fixed it. It is now far better:

http://ift.tt/2aaYNng

Kim Dae-eun (born September 17, 1984) is a South Korean gymnast. He is the 2004 Olympic All-around silver medalist. He lost the Olympic All Around title to an overscored Paul Hamm by a mere 0.012, the closest margin of loss in Olympic history. While most focused on the controversy between Paul Hamm and Yang Tae Young due to Yang's start value controversy on parallel bars, knowledgeable gymnastics people realize it was really Kim Dae-Eun who was robbed of the Olympic AA title and neither of those others. He won the gold medal on the parallel bars at the 2007 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships.

Kim was part of the South Korean team that won the bronze medal in the team event at the 2006 Asian Games.

Who's excited for Rio?

I've been seeing a lot of sad Sallys on the board recently and other than what is happening with the Russians at the moment, I'm really excited for Rio. Much more than I was for London. The competition is so much more open this time.

While the US continues to dominate, the team competition in the women's is really open. There are five teams that could realistically take the bronze in my opinion - Russia if they are there, Great Britain, Japan, Italy, and Germany.

The all-around is also really open other than Simone Biles. Shang Chunsong, Giulia Steingruber, Ellie Black, Ellie Downie, Mai Murakami, Asuka Teramoto, the second American, the Russians, Flavia Saravia, Rebeca Andrade, and I'm sure a few others could all sneak out a medal depending on who's hitting.

There are six different women that could take a vault medal, a TON of contenders not only to make bar finals but to win. Beam has a few contenders other than Simone Biles that could take it from her like Shang Chunsong, Fan Yilin, or Sanne Wevers. And the gymnasts have really been pushing the boundaries on floor and we will see the most difficult arrangement of tumbling in that final in gymnastics history.

What happened?? Missing faces...

My friend and I were having a pre-Olympic gymnastics watching party from all the 2016 US comps, and following the ranch documentary we were filled with questions about missing faces. Can someone fill us in on what happened to:

- Madison Desch
- Norah Flatley
- Bailey Key
- Jazmyn Foberg(??)

Thanks in advance.

How secure is Simone's AA gold?

There's now a popular thread asking who will win women's AA silver and bronze. I found that interesting because it just assumes that Simone will win gold. So I figured I'd start a new thread asking just how secure Simone's AA gold was. Clearly, she is the favorite. If she hits close to what she is capable of, she will win. And if she has a meltdown (multiple falls or other major mistakes), then she won't. But what if she has a not-so-great competition (say, one fall and maybe a couple of small-ish errors), but not a total meltdown? Would she still win? And who might challenge her?

Will the US ever be challenged?

The US WAG program has not suffered a loss since 2010 and have managed to also win every major AA title since 2010. With loads of upcoming talent and a seemingly non-stop consistency will they ever be legitimately challenged?

Subbing out gymnasts

I have a question about substitution procedures at the Games. While I've never seen a U.S. athlete get subbed out in the AA or an event final unless there were a true injury, there are dozens of times where Russia, Romania, etc., have pulled a gymnast out to replace with a different gymnast they believe will do better. (Examples: Galieva pulled for AA Gutsu in 92, Marinescu pulled from AA for Amanar in 96, Milo pulled for beam finals for Marinescu in 96, etc.

What exactly is the rule? I thought if you were injured, one of the reserves stepped in. But what about the 3rd best U.S., Russia, Romania, Chinese girl --- automatically disallowed under the 2-per country rule? Would they get first preference over the reserves if they had a higher score? And can a nation truly sub out their individual for another individual from that nation if they were not next in line?

Amanar vs Milo vs Gogean- which had the greatest career and which is the best gymnast

Greatest career and best gymnast are somemtimes two different things which depending on your opinion might or might not be in this case. Amanar, Gogean, Milo are often lumped together like the three Muskuteers. They are basically synonymous with the last ever legendary era for Romanian gymnastics. They are also lumped together for their collective failure to win a World/Olympic AA title (unless Simona's Sydney "win" counts) and each ones epic journey and pursuit of that elusive goal which lasted about 5-6 years for each; for their collective focus on power, difficulty, and technical strength, while each being considered devoid of artistry or originality. Each also is noted for starting their careers pretty strong on bars (particularly Milo and Simona) and as 4 event gymnasts, and getting progressively worse on the piece as their careers went along.

Maroney v. Biles Amanar

Just thinking about Biles' 16.2 at Trials a couple of weeks ago, with a hop. Then I re-watched Maroney's team final vault from 2012. You can't really compare the score (Maroney's was 16.233) because the Amanar was scored out of 16.5 thne. But I can't believe Biles only got .1 off in Ex when Maroney got .266 off for what I felt was a much better vault.

I'm not knocking Simone - she is awesome and I think/hope she'll win vault gold in Rio. But I hear a lot of talk about how she's the best vaulter ever, and it gives me pause, since I think Maroney's vault was better.

Thoughts?

What would you guys say are your favourite gymnastics blogs, pages, forums, podcasts, twitter personalities, etc?

Admittedly, I pretty much only follow this page and the gym fan confessions tumblr (http://ift.tt/1U7QEie). I also sometimes read through the athletes' twitter pages when gym news has dried up, lol, but I get the impression the gymternet is really growing, and it'd be cool to get a sense of what's out there, especially with so many casual fans entering the scene. :)

What would be you biggest disappointment of the Rio Games?

I've been thinking about it and mine would probably be:

WAG:

1) Team Brazil not having a good showing. They've worked so hard. ACL tears and back. It would be nice to contend for bronze (longshot) or for Flavia/Rebeca to be on the first AA group and grab an EF medal...

2) Simone Biles not winning gold with the American team and not winning gold in the AA. Medals of other colors in EFs would be fine to me, I just would be really disappointed if she didn't get the AA and Team gold.

Yours?

While you never know it seems fairly clear right now the gold will come down to China vs Japan and the bronze down to 3 teams- U.S, Great Britian, Russia. Which of Laurie, Aly, or Gabby will sit out of bars and an AA chance in prelilms

I am redoing this thread since:

1. It is clear by the votes everyone thinks Biles and Kocian were redundant and unneccessary options.

2. Since the Trials concluded Laurie has gotten a grand 1 more vote and Douglas and Raisman have each gotten about 20 additional votes, so it is seems likely people feel differently now that Laurie placed 2nd at the Olympic Trials and was overscored all over the place indicating she has high favor.

I am not sure if I should even bother including Laurie in the poll as it seems pretty obvious it wont be her but I will anyway for those odd dissenters. Which of Laurie, Aly, Gabby (almost certainly Aly or Gabby) will sit out bars in prelims and out of an AA chance. Or might Marta sit Gabby out on beam, Aly on bars and keep both out of an AA chance, ensuring Biles and Laurie qualify for the AA (which 95% likely would have happened anyway even with a 3rd AAer competing).

3 predictions for Rio

I have three predictions for Rio--(1) Simone's and Gabby's Brazilian-flavored FX music will bring down the house; (2) Laurie Hernandez will steal the show; and, Weird Uncle Al will make his usual questionable remarks about the younger (or younger-looking) competitors (he seems to be obsessed with Laurie, already saying, "She's a beauty"). And so she is, but the other girls are, too. Get your barf bags ready--

Women's Team Final Predictions and Discussion

Now that we actually know the U.S. team, I am curious how much of a favorite they are for the gold. I don't know if this is true at all, but I read on another gym blog that China's D-score total is actually very close to the United States'. Is this true? What would have to happen for China to take gold and how likely is it?

I have paid much more attention to the U.S, Russia, and Romania, so I'm not very informed on China's team or prospects.

Additionally, who are the likely challengers for the bronze medal, and could any of those challengers conceivably place higher than 3rd?

Didn't Make the US Olympic Team Appreciation Thread

I was going to make one for Maggie but realized we left behind A LOT of awesome girls- show them some love here

I'm gutted for Maggie, last year she was a world medalist on floor outscored Aly on both floor and vault and was moving towards lock status. Then Mr. injury came for a visit. She has far outpaced what anyone thought she would do in this sport and honestly is a true AAer. She trains much harder stuf on both beam and bars as well. I don't think she will continue but she will be a superstar at Oklahoma.

Mykayla Skinner- love her or hate her you can't say she doesn't bring it when its time. Her chance at worlds she completely shined and at trials she was honestly the bst I've seen her, even her bars and beam looked much improved. I would love to see what she can do in this sport.

Ragan- seemed like it came a little too soon for her. I honestly thought she was going to crash out but she came back strong on Day 2. She may be the one to pull a Bridget next year.

Ashton- beautiful bar worker as just outgunned by Madison. I hope she sticks around. Hopefully she can add back floor as well.

Aimee Boorman appreciation thread

One thing overlooked in Simone's rise to stardom and success is her amazing coach Aimee Boorman. She has paced Simone beautifully, refuses to let her do skills in competition she isnt hitting all the time in practice or that she hasnt fully mastered, both to prevent risk of injury and to all but ensure her hitting. She has been a great emotional motivator and stabilizer for Simone, and also is a great coach of technique.

I hope Aimee will have many other successful pupils in the future. I think she is an amazing coach. She is the complete anthesis of say Steve Nunno or John Geddard who succeeded greatly with Miller and Wieber inspite of them, not because of them, and were otherwise irrelevant without the services of those 2 amazing gymnasts making them briefly relevant. Her outstanding coaching is a large part of Simone's success, and she could coach many other top gymnasts in the future easily.

Mitch Fenner Passes Away

I posted the news in the GBR appreciation thread, but I think Mitch deserves his own thread in memoriam. At his age he probably died from cancer-related complications.

Anyway, I haven't seen any kind of official press release about Mitch's passing, but there's this Facebook post with the news:

Quote:

Colleagues will be saddened to hear that former student and lecturer, Mitch Fenner, has passed away.

Mitch was a true professional as a teacher, coach, lecturer and of course as the voice of gymnastics on the BBC.

We have lost a great colleague and friend and our thoughts love and prayers are with Sandra and all his family at this sad time.

God Bless!

Dave Cobner
Obviously he's a gymnastics legend for his commentary with BBC. Plus he was a long time coach where recently he had become the head coach of the Dutch men's team. A shame he's gone and won't be able to see the first Dutch men's team in Rio.

RIP Mitch.
