Gymnastics abuse as the main story on People.com (Rachelle and Jeff Thompson).

This is the headline article at People's magazine page with new details from the gymnastics abuse. Penn State's response is moronic as always, the GP are commenting on how they would never put their child in gymnastics. This is great for the sport. Not. Jeff Thompson needs to go. The allegations from the gymnasts keep getting worse.

"She sits me down and says, 'I'm really proud of you … but you need to choose between your boyfriend and your scholarship,' " Blades recalls. " 'He's not good for you, he's going to distract you. You just can't be with him.' "

A meeting with Jeff brought more of the same, Blades says, alleging that Jeff asked her, " 'Why would you choose a man over your scholarship? You're a lonely little girl if you can't let go of this guy. Do you stay with him because you're sleeping with him?' Jeff would be so inappropriate and really dig into my personal life. "

But Blades says she wasn't the only one subjected to criticism for her personal life. "There was times where Rachelle and Jeff … would be like, 'Oh, how many people did [name redacted] sleep with this weekend? You probably shouldn't hang out with her because she's kind of slutty.' "

"They were super controlling. They wanted to know what you ate, what you did, who you were dating, who you talked to, everything," she says. "They would ask me, 'what do the girls eat on the team? We have eyes everywhere, we know what you guys do on the weekend, we know what you decide to eat for lunch and dinner.' "

Beth Tweddle UB Concussion?

I seem to recall reading about Beth hitting her head on the uneven bars during a fall and getting a concussion and having to withdraw. Does anyone remember when this was or have any info? Or info about someone else who this has happened to?

I'm writing a gymnastics-related novel and thought a fall like this could work perfectly into my plotline.

Rio Games Postponed?

I know we talked about this a while back in a thread but I just saw this article on El Pais, one of Spain's most trusted media outlets. I'm kind of shocked as Zika was kind of spoken about initially but the side effects seemed mild enough that nobody seemed really terrified about it. The article/scientists make a really good point. The games would be the perfect/worst scenario for spreading the disease worldwide. Almost every country in the world would be represented by tourists and athletes. It would be really easy for the virus to suddenly be in every country around the world. Part of me is starting to believe that this needs to be postponed.

http://ift.tt/20QzvKN

What are the consequences of holding the Rio Olympic Games while Brazil grapples with the ongoing threat of Zika? According to a joint letter signed by more than 170 scientists and sent to the World Health Organization (WHO), the result could be the possible spread of the disease to unexpected places around the world.

“The clearest consequence is that you increase the risk of spreading the virus and the disease. With half-a-million people going to Rio for the Games – not just the usual visitors but people coming from every corner of the world – you open up the possibility of someone from each one of those places getting infected. Once the individual returns to his country, the local mosquitoes may then transmit the disease,” says Amir Attaran, a professor of epidemiology and public health at the University of Ottawa.

Attaran co-authored the letter that more than 170 scientists have signed and sent to the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Olympic Committee, urging them to postpone the upcoming Games – scheduled for August 5 to August 21 – until the Zika virus is no longer a threat. The letter also asks the organizations to consider moving the Games to another host country.

With half-a-million people coming from every corner of the world to see the Games in Rio, you open up the possibility of someone from each one of those places getting infected

The WHO has dismissed their concerns and Attaran says the organization is not taking all of the risks into account. “New epidemics could emerge in other places. We must underscore that the virus in Brazil is different from the ones that exist in many other places. That is why we see cases of microcephaly that did not happen with Zika in the same area before this epidemic,” the scientist says.

Thus, the risk is greater for those visitors who come from places where the Brazilian strain of the virus is more likely to spread. “I am not worried, except for sexually transmitted cases, that athletes from Canada or South Africa – just to cite two countries outside the areas where there is the greatest risk – will return to their countries with the virus, because the local mosquitoes of those countries do not transmit the disease. But let’s think for a moment about places such as India or Central Africa, where they could spread it.”

“A SIGNIFICANT PUBLIC HEALTH PROBLEM”
Lee Igel, one the letter’s four authors and a specialist in medical ethics and competitive decision-making at New York University, says “a mega-event in the middle of a huge Zika crisis in a city that faces economic, social, and political challenges, presents a significant public health problem.”

The NYU lecturer seems disappointed with the response he and the other signatories received from the World Health Organization. “It’s nothing more than a reaffirmation of what it has been saying. It is not willing to create a transparent, public, open forum so that athletes, visitors and the general public can be conscious of the risks of traveling to Brazil for whoever is going and for the populations of their countries of origin when they return.”

Arthur Caplan, an NYU professor and co-author of the letter, says “WHO is leaning on the fact that the virus has already spread a lot outside of Brazil and therefore it makes no sense to ban travel to Rio, but that reasoning is suspicious because not all strains of the virus are the same in terms of impact.”

The Games will create new infection routes, Attaran says. “How many Ethiopians normally visit Brazil? A lot fewer, of course, than when the Olympics are behind held there. They have to postpone the Games: Zika will spread through unexpected channels.”

Attaran says Brazil’s prevention measures are insufficient and it should wait until the infestation of Aedes aegypti, the mosquito that transmits the virus, is over. “If [the authorities] get it done, and it may only be a question of a few months, they could hold the Games. The problem is that the control measures for the infestation in Brazil have not been successful.” The epidemiologist mentions two previous times when the South American country did eradicate the mosquito: just after World War II and in the late 1990s.

Besides the general threat associated with visiting Rio, the state with the second-largest number of probable Zika cases in Brazil, the poor conditions in Barra da Tijuca, the neighborhood where the Olympic Park is located, complicates the situation. Given the lack of historical data on Zika, the Canadian researcher uses dengue as proxy to make his case. Dengue shares the same transmitter mosquito as Zika. “So far this year, there have been as many cases of dengue in the area as there were in all of 2015.” According to the letter sent to the WHO, cases in Rio in the first quarter of this year increased by 320 percent compared to 2015."

Vasiliki Millousi appreciation thread

Just read an article on Vasiliki and thought I'd start a new thread on the "greek goddess" who's competing at her third Olympics at the age of 31.

Read the article here:

Stag vs. Split Question

I know this is going to sound weird, but is the stag position harder in a leap or jump than a split?

I have always thought a split had to be harder because of the flexibility factor. I can't do a split even flat on the floor but I could jump into a stag position on the trampoline. But I notice that I never ever see stag leaps done with the front leg folded perfectly against the body. The front leg is always in about a 45 degree angle at best. And the ones that came out of the double saltos were just plain awkward looking. (And this from someone who usually needs a photo or at least slow motion to notice form errors!) But most splits at least look passably correct to a layman, even if their hips aren't exactly square or they don't hit a full 180.

US Men's Olympic Selection - Nationals & Trials

Seeing that the All-American thread usually takes a life of its own, I thought I'd create a separate thread for the few who follow and care about US MAG. Since their nationals will be during the women's Classic, surely the Classic will take up most of the thread while posts about men's nationals will sink to the abyss lol.

Anyway, without further ado!

In a little over a week, the US men’s Olympic selection will begin!

Since there was no national qualifier at USOTC this year, guys qualified directly to this year’s nationals by being on the national team, through the NCAA Championships, or by petition.

Below is a list of all competitors by state. As far as I know, Jonathan Horton and Alec Yoder are the only major names missing as they are out due to recent shoulder surgeries. They will not be making a go for Rio.

Do we know which women are competing at the Secret Classics?

China's gymnastics system falling like Europes.

There is an interesting article at GymnasticsCoaching.com about China's gymnastics system changing because of the economic development and opportunity in their country. Not surprising, with the new found economic prosperity, parents are unwilling to put their children into hyper-sport schools. There has been a sharp decline in enrollment and many sport schools have closed. This is so interesting because right now in Ontario schools in Canada, specialty sport programs are cropping up in every school district.

All-American Appreciation Thread- Pre-Olympic Summer

The other thread is almost 200 pages, and since the women just finished their last camp before the Rio camp, does anyone mind if we start a new one?

We left off with very little news from the last camp. I didn't see results, unless I missed them. Did they have any camp competitions, or do they not do those every time?

U.S. Rio Bars Specialist: Ashton or Madison?

Hi All - this is assuming that the U.S. takes a bars specialist --- and you never know with Marta! But if they do, who do you think it should be? Who is better, Ashton or Madison? (This is assuming that neither is injured).

I think I would go with Madison, but I'm interested to hear what others think. Madison can be a solid backup on all other events, in case of emergency, whereas Ashton can only do bars and beam. Also, I kind of feel like if all things are equal, the nod should go to Madison as (one of) the reigning WCs on bars).

Thoughts?

Interesting battles in Rio

I was just thinking that the most interesting battle for Rio will be for 3rd in the All-Around. Especailly if Mustafina doesn't end up competing all around. The two Americans (whoever they may be) will be heavy heavy favorites to go 1-2. But in 3rd you have some very cool gymnasts who could get a chance to shine. Shang could finally get that individual medal (somehow she has a grand total of zero). Same with Giulia Steingruber. Fragapane with a lights out meet could sneak in. And f those girls make mistakes it could get really fun- you have girls like Ellie Black, Ellie Downie, or even someone like Lieke Wevers or Mai Maurakami. Andrade is looming as well. I think it will be really fun to see who pushes through for that last spot on the podium.

What are you guys looking forward to, outside of the main titles oin the mens and womens side?

1994 Romanian Nationals

Thought we could all use a flashback to some of the brighter days of Romanian Gymnastics - the 1994 Jr. Nationals.

The only bad thing with this video is the gymnasts aren't labeled, so we don't always know who's who. If anyone can ID some of these girls in order, that would be awesome:

Request - 1997-1999 International Team Championship - USAG Vid?

Does anyone have the USAG video of the 1997-1999 Junior and Senior International Team Championships, especially the Juniors competition? I've seen NBC's coverage and the ESPN 1997 Juniors, but I know at one point there was at least a 1999 Jr. video lurking and I'd really like to see the routines of Romanian juniors Andreea Ta****, Emanuela Ungurean, and Daniela Trandafir (1998). Also, does anyone have the 1998 Junior Europeans routines of Olimpia Popa, Elena Oprea, and Trandafir?

And, does anyone have any other videos of Erika Boncsina, besides her V & UB from the 1997 International Team Championships? I'd really love to see her on floor. I know she competed at the Jr. Euros in 1996 and a couple other meets, but I can't remember which ones.

Thanks in advance.

On page 25 of the document, it says that the same turn done in different directions will only get two D-scores if they are directly connected. I like that!!

HATE: on page 24 it says that basic spins will only be allowed to have 4 maximum rotations, while complex spins (like L turn) can have a maximum of 3 rotations. Split/straddle leaps can only have 1.5 turns, and complex leaps can have a max of 1 turn. That's new right?

2016 Varna World Cup - May 13-15

This weekend we head to Bulgaria for the next World Cup.

Nominative registration:

I have to admit I'm indifferent to all the Russians competing here, but we'll see how Shelgunova and Skrypnik fare even though I'm not a fan of either.

I'm actually quite glad to see Dmitry Lankin get this assignment because his international experience is really limited. To me he's the Russian MAG version of Shelgunova, but at least time is on his side to improve for the next quad.

National Training Centers

I was trying to think of each country's national training centers and which ones have names and which are just the training center itself. The ones I recall are:

USA - The Ranch - if that counts.
Russia - Krugloye/Round Lake. Is that the name of the training center, location, or both?
Romania - Deva till 2010, then Izorvani, and now Bucharest. What happened to the old Junior national training center in Onesti?
China - Beijing
Ukraine - Koncha Zaspa - again, is that the location or the name?
Belarus - ??
Spain - Madrid I think?
France - INSEP and then the two junior centers. And I believe INSEP is in Paris.
Australia - Monthly training camps, but I can't recall where.
Great Britain - Lilleshall - is it full time or just training camps.

Am I missing any?

Rio draws are out

The Olympic draws were just published:

http://campaign.r20.constantcontact....6-f6d4169bd3fd

For WAG, USA will start on floor in sub4, same sub as the Dutch ladies just like at Worlds. China starts on beam in sub 1 and Russia on beam in sub 2 (oh my).

The subdivisions are pretty well balanced, I find myself being very interested in watching all.

2016 World Challenge Cup Brazil - May 20-22

http://ift.tt/1NXdmJo

Expected participants for the São Paulo World Cup, May 20-22.

It’s right before the European Championships, US Classic, and US Men’s Championships, so the competition field will be pretty small. However, Brazil will have most of its best there. Interesting Flávia Saraiva isn’t listed.

2016 NHK Cup

This along with All-Japan Championships serve as trials for determining the Olympic team.

http://ift.tt/1WIPJpJ

Asuka Teramoto, Mai Murakami, and Aiko Sugihara have pretty much locked their spots.

Sae Miyakawa needs to start hitting. Only 14.100 on vault and 13.400 on floor.

The men compete tomorrow.

If Ebee Deferred...

How do you think the quad would have transpired if Price continued with Elite through Rio? I would love to have seen Simone v. Ebee.

Did Maroney have potential as an All Around contender?

Just curious on the thoughts on something. Had McKayla Maroney stayed healthy post 2013 does anyone think she had potential as an AA gymnast, or was she destined to remain a vault (or maybe vault/floor) specialist? At the 2013 worlds she competed AA for the U.S for the first time but was bested by Biles and Ross for the 2 AA final spots. Could she have improved her bars and beam to the point to be competitive in the AA had she remained healthy.

Magnificent Seven Documentary

Does anyone have a downloadable version of this documentary? I'd like to put it on a DVD and back it up in case Youtube pulls a copyright claim and yanks it.

Thanks in advance.

Help Finding Clips From This Montage

Does anyone know where all the fluff clips of Dominique Moceanu come from in this montage? My mom absolutely adored Dominique and ever since I sent her the montage she has wanted to see the original features. Thanks in advance.
