Worlds videos

Anyone know where to find videos not shown on the feed of team finals or all around finals. FIG only posted qualification videos and I have searched YouTube with no luck. I am looking for Canada's videos and a few team GB videos that weren't shown on the feed

Thanks

Worlds Event Finals Day 2 - Nov. 1

WELL after the craziness of today, what does Day 2 have in store for us? A 5-way tie for beam gold?

For those who missed it, Fasana is out of FX, and SongSong will compete. It is also likely that Steingruber is out, and thus we will get to see LIEKEEEEEE which is awesome but heartbreaking all at once. Has it been confirmed yet?

Here is the draw for tomorrow:
http://ift.tt/1RFrLXG

Now if Seda and Afan both win gold, it means the entire Russian team will have won a gold except Kharenkova.

Excited to see Dragulescu, Stepko, Vernaiev, and some more Mandrake as well.

Simone's D-Scores 2013, 2014, and 2015?

Hey everyone,

Since a lot of us are trying to figure out what upgrade Biles might have in store, I thought it would be useful to look at her D-scores over the past few years and look at how she upgraded from 2013-2014 and 2014-now. But I'm having a really hard time finding her D-scores each year (or for a competition or two each year) laid out straightforwardly. Can anyone either provide me with them, or give me a link to somewhere that has these?

Thank you!

Worlds Event Finals Day 1 - Oct. 31

After all the craziness of the last few days, what do EFs have in store for us?!

I was looking at the draws today, and realized I need everybody in VT final to medal. This is going to be an issue. I literally want Simone, Paseka, Giulia, Ellie and Giulia to medal, at least.
For UB I also need everyone to medal...

I also hope Mandrake medals on one of his EFs, because he needs to go to Rio FOR CERTAIN and these rules are stupid
Pommels and Rings will be weird without Berki and Zanetti.

I hope it's a clean day and not a "whoever doesn't fall wins!" type of day.

Here is the draw for tomorrow:

Worlds Judging Assignments

I was noticing that the US has not had any judges in any phase of the women's competition aside from Tatiana Perskaia being the line judge on vault in qualification. How are judges assigned? Is this normal? Russia, Romania, China, etc.. have had a judge at some point.. I'm curious..

2015 Worlds WAG All Around BB finals - FALLs

Did I count right? Did the All Around 2015 WAG finals counted 19 falls?

I was at the SSE Hydro arena, and the reflection of the harsh lights on the floor was making it very hard on my eyes. I can only imagine for the athletes. The beam was the very same color as the mat and was reflecting so much light that it seemed impossible to actually see the beam...

Was it 19 falls? Is this a BB record on worlds AA finals? Did anyone complain?

Simone Biles Appreciation - 3x Queen of Gymnastics!!!

So happy for Simone! She unifies us as we all seem to love her.

Anyone doesn't love Simone?

What are we expecting from her in 2016?

VT: The Cheng
UB: Upgrades, maybe the dismount?
BB: Will probably stay the same
FX: Upgrades, where?
Simone Biles Appreciation - 3x Queen of Gymnastics!!!

US Stocks

So which stocks would you be investing for 2016?

1) Simone Biles - stock stayed the same. I mean, she's the best in the world, she's still the best in the world, now she has the three-peat, but her stock remains pretty solid. This is a solid investment.

2) Gabrielle Douglas - stock went up. She performed very well and clinched the silver AA.

3) Maggie Nichols - stock went up. We all know she was capable of this, but hitting 4for4 on the world stage was a stock booster for sure.

4) Aly Raisman - stock went down. It wasn't just about her bad prelims, the judges were hammering her BB and FX and that's concerning for Aly. She was closer to Maggie on FX than to Simone - which was more expected.

5) Kocian - stock went a little up. She did what was asked for her, but still proved that she could just as well be a leadoff on FX and BB. Very consistent. EF medal will help her case.

6) Dowell - stock down. No need to comment.

7) Skinner - stock stays the same.

What would we say about the stocks of Ross, Key, Baumann, Dennis, Hernandez, Forberg, Faltely, etc... after this Team and AA comp?

U.S mens and womens Olympic teams

I would like a place we can start some early discussion about the Olympic teams next year. After seeing the Team competitions at these worlds it will be interesting.

I could easily see the womens Rio team being the 5 we have here (minus Dowell obviously) with Biles, Nichols, Douglas, Raisman, and Kocian. However there 8-10 others who might have some shot. I see Nichols and Douglas in strong positions now, while Aly and Kocian both could be more vurnerable.

I dont see any of Wynn, Ruggeri, or Brooks being a serious consideration for Rio at all, unless there are injuries again. The early favorites probably would be Mikulak, Leyva, Whittenburg, Naddour, or Dalton. Honestly barring an injury I think that team is almost set, and far more set than the womens team is. It is hard to think of leaving any of those off, while any of the women other than Biles and probably Douglas could be replaced. I mean I could see Yoder stealing Naddour's pommel horse specialist spot I guess, but Naddour is a good all around gymnast too so I think he would still be taken if they were even relatively close. I think the battle for the womens team will be much more intense than the mens will be. I guess if he really proves himself they might take both Naddour and Yoder for pommel horse? If they did that who would be bumped though.
U.S mens and womens Olympic teams

What do you think of all the changes to gymnastics?

Watching old competitions got me thinking.

I also have some questions for the historians and experts on this board, please help.

1. The phenomenal amount of changes in this sport - Is enough time given to the athletes and coaches to adapt?
2. Is Bruno Grandi the gymnastics equivalent of "David Brent" or for Americans "Michael Scott" from "The Office"?

IF I got any dates wrong below please correct.
Also sorry if the post seems long but I have included headings if someone only wants to read certain parts.

The changes like the qualifications system to the Olympics e.g. test event, and the changes to the EGR for each apparatus got me thinking about everything that Bruno & his buddies have done to the sport over say the last 20 years.

For decades 70's, 80's 90's there was not much change. I know more World championships were held (from 4 years to 2 years then every year) but for the most part the sport remained the same apart from 1996 Olympics when 7 gymnasts could compete at the Olympics instead of just 6. In 1997 the age rule was also changed and gymnasts had to be 16 by years' end rather than 15.

The number of gymnasts competing has been cut down every 4 years and now there will be more changes for Tokyo.

1960's/1970's/1980's/1992 Olympics - 6 gymnasts per team and compulsories.
Team Finals 6-up-5-count.

1996 Olympics 7-up-6-count and compulsories.

1997: Age limit upped by one year and FIG got rid of compulsories.
World and Europeans Team size is 6.

2000 Olympics: Team down to 6 members and Team Finals 5 up 4 count.

2001: Worlds & Europeans: 3 up 3 count system introduced for team finals.

2004 & 2008 Olympics: 6 on a team and 3 up 3 count
World and Europeans still follow this format.

2012 Olympics: Team down to 5. TF still 3 up 3 count.
Worlds stay at 6 per team, Euros down to 5.

2016 Olympics: Team still 5. TF still 3 up 3 count.
Worlds & Euros stay as before

2020 Olympics: Team down to 4. TF 4 up 3 count.
2 additional gymnasts from each country can compete for event finals.

Reason? Teams cut from 6 to 5 to make way for more individual slots but I think FIG should have fought this issue with the IOC.

Also the TF 3-up-3-count format: While some like it I can't stand it. It's not fair if a gymnast gets injured, there is no "safety - net". I also think that if Grandi thought that this current format allowed teams from non-powerhouse countries to medal it hasn't worked so far.

I know Australia medalled in 2003 TF but wasn't that because China was fined? And I know that this year UK medalled in TF but this is 14/15 years after this format was introduced. While I am delighted for the girls on the bronze team Russia did make some uncharacteristic mistakes.

I really don't know can we look at just one result of GB winning bronze and claim that 3-up-3-count is a success from this point of view. All other years the top 4, and, certainly the top 3, at least in WAG have been USA, RUS, ROM, and CHN.

Also the open ended scoring.

I'm not really sure there was anything wrong with the 10 system. Just because one incidence in 2004 Olympics happened where Nemov wasn't rewarded for increased difficulty on the high bar I'm not sure it justifies bringing in a new scoring system. FIG just used that as an excuse. No offence against Nemov but he knew that there were only so many marks the judges could give him anyway.

I've said in several threads that competitions are getting boring with the winners being a foregone conclusion. Whoever has the highest difficulty and reasonable consistency is guaranteed a win. There are very few surprises.

While the artistry had been declining even before 2006, I feel that this code does very little to reward it.

EGR - Floor:

Floor used to have more rules about double somersaults, front tumbling and combination tumbling.

I don't know when all these were enforced but now the rules have been relaxed somewhat there is less variety of tumbling on floor e.g. double layout, double back pike and double tuck all in one routine. Why were these rules revoked? Doesn't it show more mastery to be able to combine different skills?

Vault:

I know gymnasts have to do 2 vaults in Event Finals. That hasn't changed as they are specialists.

Up to 1996 Olympics: Athletes used to do 2 vaults for TF (and AA?) and the best was chosen (remember Moceanu and Strugg in Atlanta?).

2000 Sydney Olympics:
For AA: Gymnasts had to do 2 and the vaults were averaged. Not sure about TF.
Now I need some help here but did these 2 vaults have to be different or the same?

2004 Olympics gymnasts did 1 vault in TF and AA.
Now for Event Finals the vaults could be both backward or forwards e.g. Rosu won with Amanar and DTT.

From 2005/6 on the vaults for EF then had to be in a different direction meaning that gymnasts had to learn a new vault in a hurry if they didn't happen to have 2 vaults, one forwards and one backwards. e.g. Sacramone already had a Rudi and a DTY whereas Pavs had to learn a forward vault (at least that is what I read).

Now this rule is gone from 2013 (?). Why bother to bring it in the first place?

Qualification for the Olympics:

I am very glad that there is a test event. However why was this not brought in sooner? Did the IOC try to get FIG to introduce Test Events?

If a gymnast didn't come from a country that had a chance to qualify for a team spot then how did they qualify in the past?
Didn't FIG encourage event specialists but they couldn't qualify for the Olympics? For example Pegan from Slovenia had competed for years yet has never been to an Olympics (he has retired now). In 2007 only gold medallists from World Championships event finals could qualify for Beijing 2008 then this was changed to all medallists for 2011.

All-Around/Event-Finals
Also the FIG's constant change from AA to EF and back to AA. For example by having 6 on a team but in 3 up format a country could have a good selection of AA'ers and event specialists. Now FIG is limiting a team to 4 where they have to be All-arounders leaving event specialists out of a team medal. What is the reason for this?

I appreciate that all sports evolve and sometimes for a very good reason. But I can't think of any other sport which has so many changes in such a short space of time.

Have all the changes made the sport more popular? Is it making it more fair on the athletes and coaches?
What do you think of all the changes to gymnastics?

GBR Appreciation Thread- 2015 Worlds and Stronger

There may already be a GBR thread but if so, I don't know where it is, so I thought they deserved to have one on the front page.

Congratulations on the bronze and thanks for making something exciting in the team final.

From: an American who is an old fan of Annika Reeder, a big fan of Beth Tweddle and Ruby Harrold, and a growing fan of the Downies and Fragapane. Will be rooting for more success in the days to come. Anyway, congrats.

USA vs the world

This was the name of a scam of a comp after Atlanta which was rigged for mag 7 fanchildren.

Now the day has come when the USA would win it even with legit judging, at least under 6-3-3. I think the world team needs like 10-3-3 to win eg

VT
Wang
Hong
Paseka

UB
Fan
Komova
Spiridonova

BB
Wang/Komova
Kharenkova/Wevers/Shang
Iordache

FX

Afanasyeva/Fragapane

The other option to even things out and make the TF interesting again is to make Biles a non-affiliated FIG deity who is donated to a random team for TF (lucky draw)

MAG Team finals - Oct 28th

USA lineups:

Still rings: Naddour, Whittenburg, Wynn
Vault: Ruggeri, Whittenburg, Naddour
Parallel bars: Ruggeri, Whittenburg, Leyva
Horizontal bar: Brooks, Ruggeri, Leyva
Floor exercise: Whittenburg, Naddour, Ruggeri
Pommel horse: Leyva, Whittenburg, Naddour

Gotta say, I’m cringing at the thought of Naddour on both floor and vault. I'd take Brooks' double front instead.

Ruggeri not getting the Brenna treatment on high bar it seems. Hoping for the best for him.

PH isn't going to be pretty no matter who you put up.

GAGE Meltdowns

In speaking to Dowell's performance in qualifications reminded me of Courtney McCool's meltdown at the 2004 Olympics. She won the test event the year before and had so much buzz about her possibly medaling in the AA. She starting to come unraveled when she peeled off UB in prelims at the 2004 US Championships, then went on to balm floor and beam at the 04 Olympics. She also was not chosen to compete in the AA. I wonder if Marta is beginning to lose faith in the GAGE girls. I also remember the whole fiasco with Ivana Hong and her last year at GAGE. She started to come unraveled at the 08 Olympic Trials. What do you think is the reason for this?

Old World Championships - compulsories.

While looking at the results from the Olympics and World Championships, 1950-96, i noticed that 8 of the 25 All-Around gold medal winners in women's gymnastics were leading the competition after compulsories.

There are a further 4 results that i don't have details for, all from the World Championships - Rakoczy 1950, Roudiko 1954, Latynina 1958, Latynina 1962.

Does anyone here know if they were leading the competition after compulsories?

Does This Code Work?

It just seems as though I have be thoroughly unimpressed and bored with gymnastics lately. Every beam routine (which, if we go back to the 90s was my favorite event) is the exact same. Floor is just a bunch of chucked dance skills and tumbling, with the exception of the few girls who's body can handle it, seems to be getting weaker and weaker. Actually UB is mostly the same now too, and everyone has been doing DTY forever.

Obviously "similar routines" to abuse the code has always been, and will always be, and issue. But at least in the past it looked decent. Maybe it's just me, but I have lost so much interest in this last quad.

Should we have max D scores? Should we only count 6 skills? Do we just have a poor quad for gymnastics (minus USA)? Am I blowing things out of proportion?

The Glasgow bye girl thread

I feel with all the drama going on in the qualifications round, this could be somewhat cathartic. Who won't make it out of prelims this year and it comes as a shock (or a big disappointment) to you?

Let me start with:

Marta Pihan
Jessica Lopez
Chusovitina
Videaux
Bulimar (Didiiiiiiii...)
Phan Thi Ha
Claire Martin

The list will keep on adding through out the day. Seitz is currently in 18th in the AA so she could very well make her exit too since there's no TF for Germany.

I ran into aliya mustafina at the airport

Man do I have a crazy story for you guys. So I am currently in Glasgow but I was in London because I had a layover there. So when I get off the plane in Glasgow I see FREAKING ALIYA MUSTAFINA! I was freaking the F out inside. I was walking behind her and I see her two female coaches she was with go into the bathroom but she didn't so I asked for a picture! I walk up to her and was like, you are Aliya right? And she was like what. And I was like you're Aliya Mustafina right and she said yes. Then I asked for a picture and she was really nice and took a couple with me. And then in the baggage claim I saw Arkeyev! He was actually right next to me at one point but I was too scared to say anything lol. And then when I left the airport I saw her again and went up to her and said good luck and Davai Russia and she said thank you! I was in shock when I saw her I literally died I was so happy. Hopefully this is a good indication of the days ahead:)

Best Routine No One Saw - Worlds 2015

I was looking through the various vids of PT routines posted around the gymternet, and I couldn't help but thinking how sad it is that some of these lovely routines will never see the light of day in any sort of official coverage, usually because the competitor is not from the Big 4 and/or because lovely doesn't get you as far as it used to in gymnastics. If you see a routine that deserves a hand, please nominate it here along with a few words about why.

I'll get the ball rolling with Eythora Thorsdottir's floor, which is beautiful because of its musicality and notable because she actually bends and moves through her back, as opposed to ramrod straight which is what we often get:

remembrance leotard

Excuse my ignorance but as someone that doesn't live in America, my knowledge of US tragedies isn't very strong.

However, I do remember an NCAA team wearing leotards at super six I think that had names or dates of an incident that had recently happened in their state as a remembrance type thing.

Which team was this (I wanna say alabama/oklahoma, but could be completely off) and what was the incident (I feel it was a natural tradgedy).

TIA

World's New Skills List

I am not sure when the list of submitted new skills comes out, but per a UCLA article, Danusia Francis has submitted a side aerial to one leg on beam to be named after her... and it looks awesome!

World's New Skills List

2015 Worlds Prediction Game - Sixth Time's the Charm!

IT’S WORLDS! WHICH MEANS IT’S CONTEST TIME!!!

I’m trying something new this year! Instead of having everyone post their predictions here on the forum and then me have to hand-copy them into my spreadsheet, I’m utilizing the power of Google Forms to simplify the process.

I’ve started this thread a little early because I’d like help testing the new form so we can hopefully get any kinks sorted out beforehand. I’d like to test for a few days; until maybe Monday or so.

Click HERE to access the TEST Predictions form!
Click HERE to view the TEST Response webpage
Click HERE to view the TEST Response spreadsheet

Some things I’d like to test:

- Submitting a response, and then saving the link and using that link the next day to edit your response
- Try to submit two predictions with the same username (or just two predictions from the same computer)
- Verify that all the information in the spreadsheet is correct

New info for when the official contest does go live:
- I will NOT be accepting ANY forum submissions for predictions as long as the form is working well. If you post your predictions in this thread but do not submit them via the webform, your responses will NOT be entered and recorded.
- PLEASE save a hard copy of your predictions elsewhere in case the spreadsheet goes paflooey. I suggest copying them into this thread, but remember that I will NOT be using them as your official predictions unless something goes wrong (and I will notify everyone if that is the case).

Rules for the actual point tallying are the same as before, which I will quote below:

Quote:

The rules are really simple. You post your predictions for the medal podium of each event, plus one alternate per podium.

Points
5 points --- each correct medal prediction
2.5 points --- each correct top 3 prediction, but incorrect medal prediction
.5 point --- if your alternate wins a medal.

For example, in '10 this was my AA prediction:

AA:
1 Musty
2 Bross
3 Aly
Alt: Jiang Yuyuan

The actual result was 1st: Musty, 2nd: Jiang, 3rd Bross. I received 5 points for correctly predicting Musty's medal position, 2.5 points for putting Bross on the podium but in the wrong position, and .5 points for having my alternate Jiang medal, for a total of 8 points. I didn't receive any points for Aly, since she didn't make the podium.

In the case of a tie for a medal, you still only receive points for each correct PLACEMENT. If Kyla and Simone tie in AA and you had them 1-2, you would receive 7.5 points for correctly predicting the gold medalist but incorrectly predicting the silver medalist (which would correctly be no one). If you like to tempt fate, feel free to put ties as your prediction BUT you may not have more than 3 people per podium plus one alternate (i.e. no eight way tie for gold! :p ;) )

Predictions are locked a day or so after prelims are completed, with NO EDITING ALLOWED. This gives everyone the best idea of who will be competing for the medals, but does not account for last minute substitutions due to federation swapping or injury. You are not required to predict your podium out of the official start list but may substitute anyone as you see fit; heck, put anyone on there! Do as you please. :)

The contest will run for WAG and MAG, and then one combined for those who submit in both categories. You are free to predict all the events or just a few; whatever you like. :) No deducting points for wrong answers, so why not? ;)
Once the form goes live, predictions will CLOSE at 1pm CST October 27th. You are welcome to make any changes to your predictions up until that point, but not after. Absolutely no editing or substitutions after the closing time will be allowed, so make sure you double and triple check! :)

Looking forward to another fun year!

so nice to see Antonina Koshel again!

I was pleasantly surprised to come onto this site and see an article featuring Antonina Koshel, complete with picture! She was a lesser light on the 1972 Soviet team (if one could apply that word to anybody on that legendary team). I am glad she is well and still involved in gymnastics. She was even featured in Dance magazine way back when the '72 team toured the US after the Olympics. In her photo she was doing an absolutely gorgeous split jump, which led me to believe that what someone said about that team was true--the "last" girl on the Soviet team could easily be the first girl on any other world team. It would be nice to hear what the other surviving members of that team are doing now.

WAG CoP 2017 proposal

Updated today

http://ift.tt/1JWtfqE

One-handed vaults get a 2.00 deduction again

CR 2.00 points instead of 2.50

Beam:
no forward/sidewards salto requirement anymore (not that it matters because all gymnasts are doing aerials anyway)
mount without DV -0.10
"remove [insert skill symbol I don't understand] because all gymnasts are performing it with a Barani technique" I assume they are talking about the front half, which was discussed here a few days ago as well.

Floor:
CR: salto backwards and forwards within an acro line. To fulfill CR salto must take off from two feet. Yay, no cheated front tumbling anymore!

It would be very helpful if someone who understands all those symbols that stand for skills could de-code them.

International Match: GER-BRA-SUI (WAG) / GER-KOR-SUI (MAG)

It'll take place on Saturday, 10-10-2015, in Dessau, Germany.

1 PM – 3.30 PM MAG
4.30 PM – 6.30 PM WAG

Germany will send their World teams for both the men and women, with the alternates competing as exhibition.
More info (German): http://ift.tt/1LjtMZ9

In my opinion the WAG competition will be particularly exciting as both Germany and Brazil are bubble teams for Worlds, and it'll be interesting to see how they face off. Hopefully we'll get to see Steingruber, too.

Australian Gymnastics Thread

Couldn't find any threads for the Aussie's teams, but my apologies if one exists and I totally missed it.

Anyways, what I was wanting to post was this news about Larrissa Miller, who a few months ago, opened up about her childhood sexual abuse story, and she is now an ambassador for Bravehearts:
http://ift.tt/1Z8YNFf

Since we have been hearing a lot lately of sexual abuse (by coaches; her case is different), I find it great that she spoke up, and hopefully will be an inspiration and a model of courage to other victims. I don't remember seeing it posted anywhere on this forum.

In lighter news, their WAG team for Glasgow is:
Emily Little
Larrissa Miller
Georgia-Rose Brown
Georgia Godwin
Madelaine Leydin
Mary-Anne Monckton
Kiara Munteanu

Really excited for Mez Monckton! I am a bit bummed Nedov didn't make it, but I guess she didn't do too well at the camps, and her season was not really consistent.

Could the US field two complete worlds teams and win gold and silver??

I'm sitting here reading the American appreciation thread and thinking to myself- If they were allowed to, I really think the US could field two separate worlds teams and win both gold and silver. Our team is that deep.

Do you all agree? Or do you think Russia/Romania/China's "A team" would be able to take silver instead?

Your hopes/wishes for Worlds

Hi everybody,

Worlds are almost upon us! What is everybody wishing/hoping for? (realistic or unrealistic :))

I hope that Komova and Mustafina are both relatively healthy and put on good performances.

I'm hoping for a three-peat from Biles because that would just be so damn neat to see.

And I hope for a beam gold for Iordache.

beam skill question

One of my favorite moves was Shannon Miller's gainer layout that landed on one foot. Is it the same rating as a regular gainer layout, a C?
Does anyone know if anyone else did the skill> Did any one do regular back layout to one foot?
Thanks

Belarusian gymnastics saga

We should probably move the topic to its own thread because I'm sure most would prefer to keep the USA thread about the upcoming selection camp and other Worlds matters.

Anyway, here's another twist to the story. Oleg Ostapenko is expected to become the new head coach of the women's team starting in January 2016.
