Your favorite and least favorite eras for different teams/ countries

What are your favorite and least favorite eras for each team/ country? Feel free to include powerhouses and/ or minor players.

Romania: favorite quad would no doubt be '85-'88; Dobre and Silivas -- enough said! Least favorite era would be '97-'00; although they were successful during this time, I found them to be mostly boring; Gina Gogean's medal haul at 1997 Worlds and the Sydney team's win were especially uninspiring. I thought their bars deterioration became particularly evident during this quad (see Amanar 1996 UB vs. any year thereafter). Marinescu and Raducan were notable exceptions, though neither had a very long career.

China: favorite period would be the mid-90s through 2000; I loved the 1995 & 1997 Worlds teams, as well as the 1996 & 2000 Olympic teams -- grace, difficulty, and innovativeness. Mo Huilan, Meng Fei, Liu Xuan, Bi Wenjing, Ling Jie, Yang Yun, and Kui Yuan Yuan were all brilliant. I'm probably forgetting some names. I've found recent Chinese to be more boring, especially on beam; they seem to no longer have nice rhythm, though maybe this is more of a problem with the COP; they are still great on bars.

Russia: this is a tough call for me. The mid-90s through 2000 Russians were fabulous -- Dina Kochetkova, Oksana Fabrichnova, Roza Galieva, Svetlana Khorkina, Anna Kovalyova, and Ekaterina Lobaznyuk were all great. I'm still devastated that the Sydney team did not hit in TF. I also loved the 2010-2012 Russians -- hard to argue with the talent and beauty of Mustafina, Komova, Grishina, Afanasyeva, and Dementyeva. What a shame they couldn't put it together in London TF. In spite of the fact that they came home medal-less, I found the core of the 2008 Beijing team to be very stylish; Pavlova, Afanasyeva, Semynova, and Kramarenko all had very nicely choreographed FXs that make the current and recent Russian FXs look pretty dull. I'm still bitter that they basically handed the bronze medal to the Romanians. As for a low point for the Russians, the '01 - '04 quad was pretty bleak. I don't recall many standouts, aside from a past-peak Khorkina, and Pavlova's Athens performance. The Athens team was lucky to medal; I found them mostly uninspiring (except Pavs and Khorky) and would have preferred to see the prettier/ more interesting Ukrainians medal in that TF.

USA is another one that is difficult to decide for me. In terms of success/ dominance, the most recent two quads could be considered peaks. Favorite athletes from '09 - '16 would have to be Simone Biles, Gabby Douglas, McKayla Maroney, Alyssa Baumann, and Ashton Locklear (I hope Locklear continues and gets a Worlds individual UB medal). There have been so many different World team members that I'm blanking on other names from this period. The USA's rise during the '91 - '96 period was exciting to watch. Shannon Miller, Dominique Dawes, Jaycie Phelps, Amanda Borden, and Kim Zmeskal (mostly for her ultra clean, fast, and high tumbling/ vaulting) are sentimental favorites. I thought '01 - '08 was sort of a boring period for me (though successful), with the exception of Nastia Liukin.

An obvious nadir for the USA would be the '97 - '00 quad. There were some athletes doing some nice work (e.g., Alyssa Beckerman on BB/ UB, Vanessa Atler on everything except UB, Moceanu in 1998, Amy Chow's UB), but, with few exceptions, they just could never put it together in international competition and were not quite on par with the Russians, Chinese, or Romanians (except on UB).

Skills you miss vs. skills you're tired of seeing

Random thought: name some skills you would love to see return, even if they don't necessarily make sense to use in light of the current COP. Also name skills you are tired of seeing so much of. Sorry if this topic has been discussed before recently.

I would be very happy to see that seated/ squatted spin (on beam) go away for good. I think it is the one named for Terin Humphrey, IIRC. It is just not a graceful move at all, even when done cleanly. Too many perform it, at least among the USA women.

I would love to see a return of elegant planches and handstands on beam; they have mostly disappeared, from what I can see.

Could Ponor have won the AA gold in 2004

Her vault, beam, and floor were all equal to or better than Carly. Her beam and floor were way stronger than 2004 Khorkina even if she hit, and she didnt even hit her beam and floor properly in AA finals (compare to her team final performances) otherwise might have barely held off Patterson.

If she could get something over a 9.3 on bars she had a chance to win. Even Pavlova who sucks on bars got over a 9.3 so I imagine had she trained bars Ponor could have as well. Who knows though.

Kaitlyn Ohashi- missed this quad

Looking at Kaitlyn Ohashi even in her 2013 carnation she would have been a perfect fit for EVERY single U.S team from 2013-2016. She has an incredible beam, and a very good bars and floor. She would probably do all 3 events in team finals on every team, she would be an ideal 3rd person on bars and floor and anchor on beam. In Rio she would have replaced Hernandez almost certainly since she fits the same role but better. She wouldnt ever vault in team finals as Hernandez did, but they hardly needed Hernandez to vault when Gabby could now replace and they would lose nothing.

I dont know if she could have continued to challenge Simone in the AA as she did in early 2013, but she probably could have come as close as anyone else was, barring a top form Iordache at the 2014 worlds. And she had potential to win major titles on beam. Even if not certainly unbeatable I am sure she was atleast capable of challenging and potentially beating Biles, Weavers, and Iordache (had she ever hit in finals) on beam. And she had potential to often be the #2 U.S AAer and win lots of AA medals. Ironically 2013 would have been her hardest year for this as Ross was really good that year, and Biles was far more beatable than future years and had already lost to Ohashi (with major errors) at Scam but also really good. 2013 would have been her best year to have a shot of winning (still a long shot), yet her hardest to make the AA finals at all. I think Ross in 2014, Douglas in 2015, Raisman in 2016 were all beatable for her.

Laurie on Today this morning

I was just about to leave the house for work this morning when I heard on the Today Show, which was just coming on, that Laurie Hernandez was going to be a guest. Did anybody see this? What did she talk about?

Russian Gymnastics Appreciation - 2017: New Year, New Quad

I guess it's time for a new thread, now that we have reached the new quad. :)

Here's were we left off:

-The official national teams haven't been published yet, so no need to freak out over any missing names at the moment. I think Valentina was just giving an idea of the main girls she has in mind (including Lilia Akhaimova). Outside the main group, however, the other girls lag behind.

-Spiri seems to be on Valentina's sh-tlist at the moment due to her attitude. Beginning of the end?

-Aliya is taking a break, but Valentina hopes Aliya might consider becoming a coach after she retires.

-Emin Garibov is currently working on the team as a coach. Valentina says he's retired, but recently Emin himself said he's undecided about his career.

-All the MAG Olympians (plus Ignatyev) plan to continue. The reserve men's team is much larger than the women's team.

Is Simone REALLY gymnastics' GOAT?

Simone basically won every prize this year as best female athlete in the world (some she was was only gymnast to ever win such accolades). Still, after months to think about it, would you guys considere her our sports' GOAT?
