just wondering

I was just wondering how much long-term physical damage today's gymnasts might be doing to their bodies with the type of tumbling that is done today. I was reading about Mary Lou Retton recently, and she has had hip replacement surgery. There was a congenital issue here, also, and combined with her powerful tumbling 30+ years ago (not comparable to what it is now, but still pretty good), apparently caused the damage. I remember someone saying after the LA Olympics that, in order to do the powerful new tumbling (for that time) and to be successful in gymnastics, all future female gymnasts would have to be built like MLR. But after her came Svetlana Boginskaya and then Svetlana Khorkina, two successful gymnasts who could not be more physically different. I wince sometimes when I see today's female gymnasts land from their tumbling runs. Simone Biles, for example, looks like she is falling out of the sky--how does she have enough time to do all that up there before she lands? All that pounding and all those hard landings must be taking a toll (and this is to say nothing of the men). Any thoughts?

MAG and WAG 2017-2020 Code of Points Drafts (to be voted on)

Here are drafts of the MAG and WAG 2017-2020 Code of Points to be voted on in February (I think).

MAG: http://ift.tt/1MrT6rO
WAG: http://ift.tt/22leJWy

Haven't had time to look through the draft in its entirety, but one thing I did notice that made me happy was "Note: Handspring fwd on – tucked double salto fwd off: If the 2nd salto is not completed because the gymnast lands on the feet and bottom simultaneously, then the vault will be recognized as Handspring fwd on - Tucked fwd Salto off."

Is 16 Still Sweet?

So, conventional logic often says that the ideal age for a female gymnast to be in the Olympic year is 16, but how true is that, really? Turning 16 in the Olympic year may be advantageous for that rare top AA prospect, but being 16 in the Olympic year may not be ideal for a female gymnast aspiring to make an Olympic team, in general. On the US side, in particular, these young juniors have more of an uphill climb to be seriously considered for the Oly team than older, senior veterans because they have shorter resumes and less, if any, senior experience. For many of the Olympic year “Sweet 16’s,” age has shut them out of opportunities that they would have been able to vie for, had they been older, and as long as the veterans remain consistent and competitive in international competition, there’s less of an incentive for TPTB to gamble on less established or unproven talent when drafting an Olympic team. So, if not, 16, what is the ideal age for a female gymnast to be in the Olympic year and why ?

2015 Worlds - NBC?

Does anyone have a link to the NBC broadcast of 2015 worlds? Quals, TF, AA, EF? Anything. Surprisingly, interested in their commentary

Belgium's Lisa Verschueren had to retire due to a heart problem

Wasn't sure where to put this so thought I'd make a thread. So sad for her and her Olympic dreams, but also lucky it was caught before it became a major problem. I can't imagine having to make a decision like that, and so quickly. Hopefully this doesn't hamper Belgium's efforts to qualify a team, but it seems it might :( . http://ift.tt/1Qt90Kb

Flying Squirrel Interviews and Chelle Stack's unfinished book

From facebook:

Here are a few interviews by Keith McCaffety. His newsletter was called "the flying squirells". USAG didn't like that he was exposing the bad parts of gymnastics so they banned him cridentials so he quit. A few of the interviews are Sandy Woolsey Holcomb Juliet Bangerter Betty Okiono Erica Stokes Jennfier Mercier Anne Dixon Marna Neubaur Hilary Anderson and the unfinished book that he was writing with Chelle Stack and her mom. Interesting reading and trashy at times!

Each Gymnasts (Realistic) Win Path?

What do each of these gymnasts have to do/capable of doing in order to get to their goals in your opinion.

Simone- 4 Golds in Rio:

I would say bring the Cheng, put in the Balance beam combos she's been working and add the Moors and she is set. And obviously stay healthy

Gabby- Beat Simone:
I would say get the amanar(which she has), Upgrade bars to 6.6-6.8, beam to 6.3-5. I heard rumors she's working a DLO on floor.

SCS- Medal in the AA:

Tough one, I feel like she's maxed out on Uneven bars and floor. Could maybe add more work on beam. I have no idea what to do with that vault, she just doesn't seem to have the power.

Larissa- Beat Gabby, keep pace with Simone:

If she can get an amanar all bets are off, but I just don't see hit. Hit her hardest beam set. I still think she can do more on bars as well.

Komova- Be an AA contender:
Again if she can get back her amanar she is in with shot. Her floor was actually ok for just coming back.

Mustafina- Medal in Rio:

I honestly just want her to make it there, I'm wondering if she's going to drop vault. Even with her old routines she could potentially medal on all 3 of the other events

Steingruber- medal on vault, be an AA threat:

Supposedly she is working a front double full vault (?). She rarely hits to the best of her abilities on all events.

Madison Kocian: Make the Olympic team-
She may have punched her ticket with her performance at Worlds, but I stll think she has to prove that she is either A. Usable on other events or that B. She's far ana away the best on bars. I think people forget that when healthy she can put up a 59 AA on a good day.

Ashton Locker- Make the Olympic team:
Basically it comes down to she has to knockout Kocian. Its kind of an unfortunate case because my ehart tells em a healthy Ashton would've been taken over Kocian this year and I honestly feel she is the better more natural bar worker. But at this point I think she would have to show up with 7.0 or thereabouts bar routine.

Kyla Ross- make the Olympic team

I think after seeing worlds her odds have definitely improved. Beam did not look too hot. If she can come with 6.6 bar routine that she can hit and a nice beam set, I'd take her.

Feel free to add more/contribute. Or any ya'll good with routine construction/have any updates on upgrades.

FIG WAG Newsletter November 2015 Online!!

Here it is on the website: http://ift.tt/1MZqZUF

Here is the direct link to the PDF file: http://ift.tt/1MZr2jc

LOL there's so much shade for BB. From page 15: "Beam exercises are still, with many pauses and no fluidity. Many difficult routines still have no artistry at all which is disappointing. The "close to beam" special requirement maybe should include an element instead of sitting on the beam, turning, lying back and then standing up. No gymnast did a sideward dance element (for the increased value - it is not being performed for fear of falling. There was an overuse of Gainer salto dismounts (in particular to get a D dismount)."

Thoughts??
