PDF Grace, Gold & Glory

I stumbled upon a free PDF of Gabby's book, Grace, Gold & Glory and thought I'd share with anyone who may be interested.

http://ift.tt/1fOoeJb

It's pretty short and doesn't give much gymnastics detail. And there are plenty of mistakes, like "Jordan Weiber" and calling the junior visa championships JO nationals. But it's free.

If you've read it, share thoughts too.

Tatiana Nabieva anti-semetic

Nabieva just posted on Facebook an article about millions of Jews being killed in Ukraine during WW2. Her title to the post was, "Big deal! Jews are not people. People are you f**ks" Needless to say, I am not a fan and am horrified.

The decline of balance beam

I don't think I am the only one who noticed, but balance beam has certainly become the weakest event in this quad. I actually noticed this in the last quad, though it wasn't as bad as it is now. In the 2006-2008 quad, we were spoiled with many confident beam workers and it seemed even the gymnast that placed in the teens were just as talented as the gymnasts that made event finals. Now it seems gymnasts lack confidence on beam and the routines are no longer original in anyway. Even the top two beam workers in the world, Biles and Iordache, lack confidence and aren't very sharp in their movements. It will be refreshing to see Catalina Ponor back in action on beam because she has that style and confidence we love to see on beam. Hopefully Afanasyeva can start doing beam again by Rio because she has that sharp yet elegant style. I think the CoP has really ruined balance beam in the past two cycles and hopefully for the future cycles they can look back to the past for inspiration.

Marvin Sharp arrested for misconduct and molestation charges

At this point it's probably better to give this topic its own thread since it's a developing story and will be ongoing. I think most would prefer to keep the all-American thread to current gymnastics news, Worlds preparations, etc.

Anyway, here's the latest today:

Quote:

A former coach of two 2008 U.S. Olympic gymnasts faces four felony counts of sexual misconduct with a minor and three felony counts of child molestation after being arrested in Indianapolis early Monday morning, according to an online court record.
He's also been busted for child porn.

WHAT in the world is Claire Boyce doing?

so I was just watching the florida vs LSU meet from this season...

Why on earth is claire boyce shrieking through the LSU beam routines? you can see its her at the end of this video and in the full meet coverage you can hear and see her shrieking when the gators are on floor but no surprise not when they're on beam and need to concentrate!

Is she always like this I'm confused at how she could think this was ok? or am i completely missing something?

Kyla ross choosing NCAA over pro

My knowledge on the technicalities in rules behind competing for NCAA are pretty inadequate so i was hoping someone could explain what kyla was entitled to after gold in london.

Being a gold winning team in such a popular sport to the point the group had their own nickname must have been a massive money maker for the girls, but what if anything was kyla allowed to receive? Is it just that she wouldn't have been allowed individual sponsorship but could still except payment for photoshoots/ interviews etc? or would she not have been allowed to except any kind of payment for anything?

I do think it was the best decision to make because I'm sure she's gonna absolutely smash ncaa but i do wonder if she missed out on any substantial pay checks, given how high profile the fierce five were.

Also on another note did jordyn get any kind of scholarship (maybe academic?) for UCLA?

young gymnast joining agency

I saw on Nastia's instagram that she was showing a little girl around NYC. I found that the little girl is a 5 year old gymnast that is with the Shine Agency. Does signing with the agency mean she can't ever do NCAA? She's a cute girl, but she's 5 so I was just kind of confused as to why she might make such a huge decision at such a young age.

Laura Cutina Book available

The “Parallel life” novel is a dramatic insight into the life of Laura Cutina, an Olympic champion at the Los Angeles 1984 games. The story takes place in an atrocious communist era, where Ceausescu and his dictatorship have a strong lead on Romania and where sportsmen and women have very little support and are marginalized. Along with her teammates, Laura suffers through everything, from fierce hunger, sometimes leading to fights. The novel is a mix between agony and ecstasy; as both of Laura’s parents die of cancer, and her only sister, in a car accident at the fragile age of 9. She then goes on, with profound scars, with only her love of sport keeping her going. Subsequently, as young as 15, she falls in love with the gymnast Cosmin Daniel Licaciu who was a year older than her. They actually meet while Laura was just 6, in the gymnastics arena, in Bucharest. After 3 years of profound love, their relationship ends. They meet at a championship in Germany, where their romance is restored. Laura was coached by the great Nadia Comaneci, who she adored. For her, Nadia was unique, special and magnificent. Laura participates at many championships, but severly injures herself many times. At 16, she participates at the American Cup, but is defeated by the American Mary Lou Retton. The novel presents the sufferings of Laura Cutina as a young girl as she loses her sister, and then as an adolescent who needed to be strong in her daily life, her career, and in her love life. She loved her boyfriend a lot, although she would always receive letters from all over the globe. At 18, Laura and her boyfriend, Cosmin Daniel, part ways as a result of a conflict and would later on meet 23 years later. A thrilling story full of suffering, but also hope. Laura and Daniel are now married and currently live in Las Vegas, coaching at an arena. They each have two children from their previous marriage.

Opinions on Kirsten Maloney?

What are your overall views on Kirsten Maloney. She was probably the most consistent U.S gymnast (and taking into account total achievements, as much as it pains me to say it, the most successful U.S gymnast) of that quad. She was the only one who was always 1 of the perceived dominant 2 Americans. Despite her 5th place at the 97 Nationals (where for once her famed consistency went out the window, falling on bars three times over 2 days) I would say she and Atler were considered as clearly the top 2 Americans each of 97, 98, and 99. Although in 98 a case could be made for Moceanu too. Then in 2000 obviously it was she and Ray. She might have even been able to win Nationals 4 times in a row. She obviously could have won in 97, especialy with Atler falling on bars on the 2nd day, and many of the other contenders having mistakes. 2000 she had rocky performances on beam both day, and possibly could have won otherwise, despite that Ray really pulled away from her after that this year.

However internationally she never made a huge impact at the biggest meets. She had a lot of success at meets like Pacific Alliance, Goodwill Games, and such. At Olympics and worlds she was rightfully docked for her hideous form and questionable technique, and she also seemed to be often injured (particularly at 99 worlds and 2000 Olympics) and unable to perform up to her Nationals and earlier season level ever at said events.

I couldn't stand her gymnastics, and found her a major eyesore and a reflection of all that is wrong with the Parkettes training. She was flat out fugly in her work, and I used to have nightmares about her twisting form and her leg form in general. I do respect her throwing some insane difficulty for the time though, generally being extremely consistent with it, and being as tough as nails, performing well and having success with some enormous injuries at times.

Is making your hobby your job really the best thing?

I have been in love with gymnastics for over 30 years. I have been a coach for 14 and have done it off an on for 7 of those years. But I feel like making it my job has taken a bit of my love away. I love the sport. But every time you think you are doing what is right for child they leave/ get hurt/ have a parent who doesn't understand what is going on and they take it out on you. I love working with kids and gymnastics. It has been successful over the years but now I keep thinking that I am losing the one thing I really love (you know outside of my family.) Anyone have similar thoughts or struggles?

Experience at Nationals

So I got to attend my first ever major gymnastics meet yesterday. It felt like the same crowd you would find at a Justin Bieber concert. My sister and I are in our mid to late 20's, so we felt a bit out of place at times. We both did gymnastics when we were younger.

We walked by the arena around 5, and I see a bunch of young girls dressed in leos and warmups. I then noticed Al Fong. It was most of the gymnasts arriving in one big group. Nothing like being a few inches from them!

Doors didn't open until 6, but I decided to be sneaky, and ask the security guard where the closet bathroom was. He pointed inside the venue, and let us in. I guess we were technically allowed in early because we have credentials, but it felt scandalous haha. We sat and waited around. I then saw Sam Peszek walk by, and I got a picture with her. She is SO SO short in person. Once gates finally opened, we met Carly Patterson, and did the whole makeover booth. We finally sat and watched warm ups!

It was so much fun! We enjoyed it, and it goes by so quick. I can't wait for night 2. We waited outside after the meeting, and I got a picture with Hundley, Gowey, Skaggs, and Polina. Also, Nastia walked right out, and NO ONE noticed her. I had to do a double take. I quietly walked away, and got a picture with her. I was nervous asking, because I wasn't sure if it was her or not. She was all done up. :p

Jamie Dantzscher

I was recently watching some old gymnastics videos when I rediscovered my first ever 'fave gymnast ever ever ever' jamie dantzscher

So naturally like any other 21st century chick I shamelessly stalked social media to try find her and see what she up to, but found nothing. I even somehow managed to find one of her little sisters instagrams and she had multiple pictures of what seemed every member of the family except Jamie:(

So does anyone know if a) she's alive and well? and b) whats she up to now?

She always seemed super laid back and like she was very much her own person who kept to herself, in interviews so im not suprised she doesn't have instagram and twitter like some of the others, but i would be interested in knowing what she's up to now! Has anyone met her? is she super nice like i always imagined she would be? haha

TIA
Jamie Dantzscher
